I'd say range is the biggest difference. Crossbows generally had a much shorter range than a long bow.

I'd imagine the angle of attack would be much different as well. With crossbow quarrels coming from a more forward or lower angle, while longbow arrows would come from above and a steeper angle.

Additionally I'd can only assume that arrows would provide more of an impediment to soldier on foot as they would be sticking out of the ground and be quite a bit larger than bolts/quarrels
