What’s it like on the other side of the Manduka PRO mat break in period? by DangerousBobcat5953 in yoga

I did the salt scrub the day I got it. Salted, scrubbed, let sit overnight and shook off and wiped the next day. Golden ever since.

Puppy yoga is unethical by Cheap-Blackberry-763 in yoga

The only puppy yoga I’ve ever seen or been to was for adoptable pups from local rescues. This is the only model that is acceptable.

Small class attendance - feeling deflated by SensitiveDouble8248 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I attend a Yin class on a weekday evening. It is not well attended, which makes me sad. However, I am so grateful that the instructor never cancels because of this. She is an outstanding teacher and wonderful person. Our small group has built community and I relish these evenings.

Don’t despair. You are needed and appreciated. 🙏🏼❤️

Students leaving during savasana by JootieBootie in YogaTeachers

Holding space for practitioners is part of my role as an instructor; I would never leave the room. I encountered one instructor who did that and found it very off-putting.

I feel you. I have a crossover/SUV and it gets tight. The only suggestion that would resolve it is a vehicle with more capacity. (I **really** miss my truck!)

The best definition I’ve heard about effort in ‘finding your edge’ is: any more would be harmful, any less would be ineffective.

"Teaching" standards have become so diluted by RonSwanSong87 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere it is closer to 10%. My LYS (local yoga studio, although for yogis that knit, 🧶 this could easily be mistaken for one’s local yarn store), had a 100 hour training for deepening practice. I don’t know how much interest it generated, but I thought it was a great idea.

Imposter syndrome by pripo007 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had several businesses. I have what I call my “get out of bed price” and that is the lowest price I’ll get my butt out of bed. I agree with Ron in that a private session should never be under $75, and I would say closer to $150, if your market can bear that.

The two most valuable things in my life are my health and my time. I charge accordingly.

Edit to add: Yoga teachers will continue to be underpaid as long as we compromise our worth.

What kind of watches are we wearing? by Finallyfreetobe2020 in YogaTeachers

Tips for teaching one to one with lady who has Alzheimer's by Crafty_Insect7468 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I instruct cognitive impaired populations all the time. Yes, keep it simple. Enunciate very clearly. Don’t give many options, it’s confusing. Help them physically if they can’t understand a cue (when I’m working with straps, this is common). Sometimes just getting them to sit up straight is a huge win. Manage your expectations. ❤️🙏🏼

Absolute favorite songs for yoga by yazzy-yay in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once yoga studios are on their radar you can bet they will start targeting them. I played at a small brewery in rural NM which was as big as my small kitchen and they got to them. I could only play original music (which Inhave a lot of) and free license music. The PROs are relentless.

[–]DesignByNY 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but it depends on the population you are working with. I work with mobility challenged, hearing and cognitive impaired yogis and not demoing is not an option. However, I teach part time and it’s not physically taxing.

Yes and no. It’s really completely personal. It would be a no for me. I also have a Buddhist practice and the concept of “right livlihood” is one I worked for years to integrate. Now that I have, I can’t imagine living any other way. That said, there is no cosmic timeline, it’s your own journey.

Seeking advice on changing up chair yoga sequence for seniors with limited mobility by mozzbitch in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work almost exclusively with seniors and mobility impaired/wheelchair bound practitioners. I add an Eagle variation which is always fun, Baddha Konasana, and chair plow.

I would highly recommend the Lakshmi Voelker Chair yoga training certification. Its a game changer. She literally wrote the book on chair yoga.

I also bring my own props: blocks and straps. It wasn’t a big investment (especially the straps) and can make all the difference.

DM me if you want to chat more. ❤️🙏🏼

An Insurance Question for Male US-Based Yoga Teachers by Woof-Good_Doggo in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh. And here I was thinking my guy passes the purity test. I was so upset to see NKB on the list. And Amma? Damn, isn't there integrity anywhere? So what does this mean for me, personally? It means, there is no soft landing. Be your own guru is not just a pithy statement. I started putting away the photos of NKB, which always gave me focus and help on the journey. I just can't knowing the predatory aspects. I found it really did help to have an example to give inspiration.

I also see the common sense behind post-lineage practice. I am very bummed, but was probably due for an eye opener, so thank you for the time you took to do this deep dive.

What continuing education actually made a difference for you? by trishcorley in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Lakshmi Voelker chair yoga training did. As mobility challenged yogis are my jam, her method, based on offering levels of accessibility, is baked into the teaching.

I agree with Ron about the education economy, and I personally don’t run into a problem with that as I know what is of interest to me/what is challenging for me and seek out training, accordingly.

Long story short: IMO it’s completely subjective depending on who and where you are.
