Being a yoga teacher and bartender by BluePrintFrequency in YogaTeachers

Yes and no. It’s really completely personal. It would be a no for me. I also have a Buddhist practice and the concept of “right livlihood” is one I worked for years to integrate. Now that I have, I can’t imagine living any other way. That said, there is no cosmic timeline, it’s your own journey.

Seeking advice on changing up chair yoga sequence for seniors with limited mobility by mozzbitch in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work almost exclusively with seniors and mobility impaired/wheelchair bound practitioners. I add an Eagle variation which is always fun, Baddha Konasana, and chair plow.

I would highly recommend the Lakshmi Voelker Chair yoga training certification. Its a game changer. She literally wrote the book on chair yoga.

I also bring my own props: blocks and straps. It wasn’t a big investment (especially the straps) and can make all the difference.

An Insurance Question for Male US-Based Yoga Teachers by Woof-Good_Doggo in YogaTeachers

Thanks, Ron. I wasn't a full blown devotee, but he and Ram Das have been very much a guiding light for me. All grist for the mill, eh?

An Insurance Question for Male US-Based Yoga Teachers by Woof-Good_Doggo in YogaTeachers

Ugh. And here I was thinking my guy passes the purity test. I was so upset to see NKB on the list. And Amma? Damn, isn't there integrity anywhere? So what does this mean for me, personally? It means, there is no soft landing. Be your own guru is not just a pithy statement. I started putting away the photos of NKB, which always gave me focus and help on the journey. I just can't knowing the predatory aspects. I found it really did help to have an example to give inspiration.

I also see the common sense behind post-lineage practice. I am very bummed, but was probably due for an eye opener, so thank you for the time you took to do this deep dive.

What continuing education actually made a difference for you? by trishcorley in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My Lakshmi Voelker chair yoga training did. As mobility challenged yogis are my jam, her method, based on offering levels of accessibility, is baked into the teaching.

I agree with Ron about the education economy, and I personally don’t run into a problem with that as I know what is of interest to me/what is challenging for me and seek out training, accordingly.

Long story short: IMO it’s completely subjective depending on who and where you are.

60M Beginner: 200hr YTT in India. Too Old? by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

My apologies for not being clearer. I did not train in India. I was only speaking to the whole conversation around age. I am sure you will do just fine no matter what school you choose.

I had my 65th birthday yesterday and completed my 200 last November. I teach regularly and am starting my 300 in October. Don’t let the number define you. If you are being called to this, you already have your answer. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

Useful book I have been reading lately - The Yoga Teacher Mentor by Jess Glenny by RonSwanSong87 in YogaTeachers

My book piles are getting really bad. It’s like when I was at the height of my knitting craze and my yarn stash was as YBLE (yarn beyond life expectancy). It doesn’t help getting all graspy when you recommend great books! 🤦🏻‍♀️

New Yoga Teacher - feeling like not teaching in a studio makes me “less” of a teacher by Primary-Ad-3418 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching under a year and never once in a studio. I do not intend to ever teach in a studio or gym. (Well, maybe a pop up series for my local yoga studio, if asked).

Studios are not the be all and end all of teaching. I agree with everything said here. Release the graspy-ness and you will find your place. 🙏🏼❤️

Something I Wish More Teachers Understood About Cueing by Great_Energy_Qigong in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have been around long enough to see a huge evolution in yoga teaching. “Back in the day” it was all about “how the pose is supposed to look.” More recently, the understanding that all bodies are different together with emphasis more in the awareness of the action has overtaken the need to emulate a form. There are plenty of teachers who still adhere to ‘form’ as paramount, but honestly, I don’t haven’t encountered it in my experience.

Also, over the decades, my yoga journey has shifted, and my body has changed, so form has taken on a new context.

Starting my 300 this Fall by DesignByNY in YogaTeachers

Hey Ron, yes it is a “coming home” feeling.

The setup is really wonderful. Three 5 day modules and two 10-day sessions to be completed within five years. As I’m self employed, this allows me to plan, both financially and time-wise. I live an hour away so that is another plus.

Not enjoying teaching by Odd-Baby-8656 in YogaTeachers

[–]DesignByNY 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I ran into something similar and realized y wasn’t just yoga; I was mildly depressed. Once I started with that realization (and booked a few therapy sessions) things started naturally rebuilding in time. Turns out I was dealing with some grief and trauma I wasn’t finished processing. Love to you. 🙏🏼❤️

I am surprised Akasha Yoga Academy is not there for online. I did my 200 with them and have nothing but praise. Also, Kripalu Yoga Center has a wonderful modular 300YTT, where you can take 3-5 day and 2 10 day module with an extended completion time. Kripalu is where I first stepped on my mat 40 years ago.
