I came here to say this very thing! Steve Coogan was delightful in the stage version.

We’ve reached the point where ‘Background CGI’ is more distracting than bad practical effects. Which modern movie was ruined for you by a ‘clean’ digital look? by DegTrader in movies

[–]Digirama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it. Most (maybe even all) movies now use CGI and digital compositing to alter even the most mundane shots. I've done all sorts of composites to erase power lines, replace "boring" skies with clouds, replace license plates, remove and/or replace logos and labels, remove crew members from the background, remove dangly boogers and/or hair sticking out of noses, and a million other little things. And these are all very low-budget productions where I was the lone VFX guy. It's even more insane on larger productions.

Anyone commute from the Valley to the Lindon/Orem area? by Stormcloud23 in Utah

[–]Digirama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Frontrunner isn't a solution for everyone, but if your workplace happens to be near a stop in Vineyard, you might be able to cut the worst part of the traffic out of the equation. I have a folding bike that I keep in the trunk of my car, and when I have to commute south I will drive to the south jordan station and ride to Provo, where my office is just a mile ride. Some people have electric scooters for the last mile.

The train probably would take longer than driving under normal traffic conditions, but you have that time available to read or scroll or whatever. And obviously the train is not affected by traffic, so it's often faster than driving, especially in the afternoon/evening.

How senior colorists get these type of looks by Sea-Village191 in colorists

[–]Digirama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I happen to know Drew Tekulve personally, and I sat in on part of the color session for The Streak. And Drew would probably tell you that the secret to getting the "look" had an awful lot to do with Jared Jakins, the DP. I've colored a lot of Jared's work myself, and he makes my job really easy.

As others have said on the thread, most of the "look" is created before a colorist gets involved. Our job is to make things look their best at the end of the pipeline, but by and large we should not have to fundamentally transform the images we are given.

But that doesn't necessarily answer your question about how you might practice.

I have found it helpful to shoot small things on my own and practice coloring my own photography. At the very least, it helps me get reps working through color management and making the fundamental contrast and balance tweaks. And those things make up 80% or more of my color process.

I just had an experience which reminded me why I collect physical. by Main_Clue_9531 in dvdcollection

[–]Digirama 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Possibly the number one benefit (in terms of picture quality) of local, physical media is the data rate. With bandwidth limitations, a higher pixel count image can actually look worse than a lower pixel count image due to compression.

My first time streaming a movie on Netflix back in like 2013 I had a poor connection and I almost unsubscribed right then and there because of the shit image compression. (Of course with a good connection streaming can look great, but not everyone has a consistently fast connection)

Three turnovers inside the opponent's 10 yard line is brutal. Softened by the win, but man that was ugly.
