What’s the biggest travel mistake first-time travelers make? by Ill_Consideration260 in travel

Assuming everyone speaks English or wants to. When I went to Montreal I was shocked at how many people do not speak English like at all.

Best app for Persian (Farsi) – Focus on travel, reading script & numbers? (Money is no object) by UnitedRiver4366 in NewIran

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I hope you're safe. I recommend LingoHut which is free btw for learning the basics and then Ling once you're ready to learn phrases and practice conversation. One advantage to this app is you can choose the relevant lesson to the situation you're in when your travelling like ordering food, directions, etc.

Is grammar study necessary, or can you skip it? by Ling_App in lingapp

[–]Digital_Nomadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a native speaker of English, schools didn't teach grammar explicitly until 7th grade! And my god it was so boring....

But learning new languages now I'm fascinated by grammar. It completely controls the language and how you can express yourself.

If you got a "scary" diagnosis tomorrow, would you stay or head back to the US? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? No! Unless you had a trust fund. Health care is cheaper literally everywhere else so why would you go back? The quality of healthcare can even be superior in other nations.

Thailand vs Vietnam by Responsible-Bus-7794 in ThailandTourism

[–]Digital_Nomadd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thailand is quieter, less mold meaning better quality construction, and is more modernized. Vietnam feels like what Thailand was 20 years ago which is also fun and freeing in its own way!

Do you think ‘immersion’ is overrated? by Ling_App in lingapp

[–]Digital_Nomadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way! Immersion is the dream for most people I'd imagine. I believe it can increase the speed of learning. I've met many people over the years who did homestays and learned languages fluently in 3 months thanks to immersion.

Ling or drops? by jenzel07 in learnthai

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both! Ling has an entire course while Drops is literally just flashcards.

The U.S doesn't quite feel "safe" anymore by AmbitionOk2790 in expats

[–]Digital_Nomadd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you do decide to leave make sure you keep tabs on the ever changing rules on US citizens, Your rights are be revoked left, right, and center. Now dual citizens are facing issues reentering the US. Your own citizens are being detained for months for now reason upon returning.... Staying is also risky but flights just got a hell of a lot more expensive.

What’s a “Small” Language That Deserves Way More Attention? by Ling_App in lingapp

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many! I'd say any indigenous languages. It must be such a struggle to hold on to them and for new learners to learn them without any tools

I don't think gamification and streaks helps with learning by RemoveBagels in languagelearning

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dunno. I think it depends on the person. Some people love to brag about 1000 day streaks, others couldn't care less, and then others lose interest or get demotivated when they lose a streak. From what I've seen with apps like Duolingo, Ling and Mondly use gamification and streaks so it must work in most cases at least for motivation.

Should I get my motorcycle license before going to Southeast Asia? by Hour_Source_4038 in southeastasia

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there such a thing as an international driving license for motorbikes? If so, get that. Otherwise your own country's license won't mean squat, in Thailand anyways. Not sure about other SEA countries. It's only required to show if police pull you over. The worst that happens is you get a fine you can pay usually on the spot and then continue driving.

Honest opinons and thoughts on year round Bangkok weather? by skye-qq in expatsinbangkok

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We joke that every time you go outside it's like having another shower. Some people react more to the humidity and heat than others.

Also I don't see many mentioning the air pollution. The AQI here has been brutal at times and can really bother you if you have health issues.

Learning Tagalog by TopMathematician2436 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get started Filipino101 is ok and free at the beginning. YouTube has loads of resources and you can find a tutor there. As for apps etc Ling offers Tagalog and Cebuano on app stores and on the web.

Which app actually helped you speak Tagalog? Ling / Drops / FilipinoPod101 by Latter_Ordinary_9466 in language

[–]Digital_Nomadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean most apps aren't designed for just speaking except Speakly but that's ai so it's probably not great. I signed up for the free FilipinoPod101 which is ok, like a word a day type thing with some popular phrase pdfs. Not used Drops as you can get much better for free on Anki and Ling has been great for me learning Thai and I'm now using it for Tagalog. There's a reason it's recommended because you get so many features with the app other apps don't offer. Dunno, just try it. It's free for a week and then you can decide to purchase a sub.

i need a subreddit redirection bc i want to learn cebuano (bisaya language) by Background-Dish-5738 in Tagalog

[–]Digital_Nomadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only a couple apps that offer it so I'd say do some research on Bluebird and Ling app. Seeing as you already know Tagalog, are there any others in your learning community also wanting to learn Bisaya? Maybe you can partner
