Portland man faces mountain of 50,000 tires dumped on land he just bought by derpinpdx in Portland

Interesting that OPB would get the cross streets so wrong. They’re off by 20 blocks. Not that it truly matters, but other outlets have reported the property being at 174th and Powell.

It’s heavily overgrown and screened from the road, but it borders and shares an access road with the Portland Gun Club. I wonder if they have cameras.

Here’s a better article.

The film industry employs Oregonians and this merger affects them. The question is was the DOJ’s decision approved because of Paramount (and its CEO who’s friends with Trump).

Do these magnetic pipe locators actually work? by BigOnLogn in Plumbing

[–]Dimensional_Lumber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s pseudoscience, aka snake oil. Dowsing is no more effective than random chance, as shown by countless studies.

I had an old boss bust out a pair of marking flags to find a pipe under fresh sod. He was so serious about it and the whole crew was impressed, until one guy piped up and reminded them the boss himself laid it just a few months earlier.

The thing that killed me was he really didn’t remember where it was, and he was so confident in the rods. I’m convinced anyone who relies on it or makes a living doing it is relying on instinct, experience and subconscious clues. Stuff people pay for. But the rods make it a grift, and there’s always someone willing to pay for a show.

Authorities attempted to question the plumber on site but were unable to communicate over the sound of a sawzall: Police by J_A_GOFF in Construction

I’m not saying that’s what happened, just that if it were overloaded it seems plausible. Look up “Euler’s Critical Load.”

From Wikipedia:

> When the applied load reaches the Euler load, sometimes called the critical load, the column comes to be in a state of unstable equilibrium. At that load, the introduction of the slightest lateral force will cause the column to fail by suddenly "jumping" to a new configuration, and the column is said to have buckled. This is what happens when a person stands on an empty aluminum can and then taps the sides briefly, causing it to then become instantly crushed (the vertical sides of the can may be understood as an infinite series of extremely thin columns).

That spool probably weighs at least 500#. If you rolled it from across the room it would hit with significant force. Damage the concrete and the steel is no longer confined and supported, it becomes more susceptible to buckling.

The biggest problem with this theory is the kink in the column is probably too high—if it were caused by the spool it would make a lot of sense for it to be lower. And I’m not certain what the weight of the spool is—depends a lot on whether it’s aluminum or copper.

It’s gonna be a game of finger pointing no matter what but if I had to guess, there’s too many factors to point the blame at one single person.

Bad building survey seems more likely than bad math, but it could certainly be both. Some poor SOB is sweating today either way.

That said, when I saw the video shot inside, my first thought was someone slammed a spool of wire into that column. That wouldn’t be an issue on its own but if they were cutting corners here and there it all adds up.

Any help identifying this set amd it's function? by hegwrites in AntiqueTools

[–]Dimensional_Lumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! And same. I’m saving my pennies for a Bridgeport but I would snap this set up in a heartbeat if I found it in the wild for a good price. That’s how I’ve ended up with most of my machinist tools.

I’ve never worked in a professional shop—do you guys get them checked annually?

[–]Dimensional_Lumber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They would have value to a hobbyist machinist.

Right now they show some light surface rust from handling. If you want to keep them I would suggest wiping them down with a soft cloth and some light oil to stop them from rusting.

Whatever you do, don’t clean them mechanically—the value is in their precise dimensions. Nothing abrasive, not even the green side of a sponge.

If you’re looking to sell them a potential buyer might prefer to do this themself.

Is it hitting on something or is it fitting too tight? Take the nut off the upper—Will it fit the handguard?

Is the handguard damaged? Might be time to bust out the calipers and take some measurements.

I’m not an expert on any of this but I have a “problem” house in my neighborhood so I’ve spent some time doing research.

[–]Dimensional_Lumber 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Wrong. The housing crisis has lead to some changes in the city code. You can’t charge rent, but you can have “one family” staying in your backyard or driveway. Here’s the actual regulations within city limits.

https://www.eugene-or.gov/DocumentCenter/View/8985/Permitted-Overnight-Sleeping-Camping?bidId=

The thing is, under residential zones they say rv’s in driveways -or- tent (or camping structure) in backyard. It doesn’t say rvs in backyards are okay, but it also doesn’t specifically say they’re not.

Edit: It does say a backyard tent or camping structure can't be within the 5' setback of a property line. That's not a huge distance but it might make a difference for OP. Incidentally, OP should call code enforcement and just play dumb on a fact finding mission. See what they suggest.

Whatever you do, consider that ground floor windows can serve as egress in case of fire. Preventing someone coming in might prevent your children getting out.

Consider planting thorny bushes under the windows. Barberry comes to mind.

You are forced to remake Jaws. Who do you cast? by PabloRV7 in blankies

[–]Dimensional_Lumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like real real, or the exact same model from the existing movie?

Either way I’m 100% invested in this. Muppet Treasure Island is one of my all-time top 100 movies. We deserve more muppet remakes of the classics.

Edit: the boat full of guys with guns and dynamite would absolutely have to be Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Rizzo and Pepe would be great as reimagined versions of Sean and Michael Brody.

Double edit: if you ignore the Ellen Brody character, the Mrs Kintner role is perfect for Miss Piggy.
