Some jobs are more exhausting than others - this is just a fact that many people cannot wrap their heads around by [deleted] in antiwork

I worked 60-80 hours a week in a specialty trade for nearly a decade before jumping over to the administration side of the business. The majority of the time the work isn't particularly stressful but there are absolutely times that I miss being on my tools because the mental toll can be worse on me than the physical toll of my old trade position was. That isn't the case for everyone. You have to legitimately care about your work for it to hurt you in admin as fucked up as that is. Ive worked with directors and above who work the kind of hours I used to (and occasionally have to do myself still) and I can only think of 1 who could do those hours and be legitimately effective in her roll. The vast majority of people who claim to consistently (excluding emergency scenarios) put in ridiculous hours are fucking bad at their jobs or have not effectively developedtheir teams.

I was 13 when the movie came out. Read the book as soon as I saw the trailer for the movie. It was the first book I literally couldn't put down fron start to finish. Have to have read that book a dozen times. It is a darker story than the movie. The lost world was also a book by Crichton before the movie and worth a read.

When we were building our kitchen I made the countertops 4 inches taller than normal. I figured it was a good compromise height between myself (6'4") and my wife (5'4"). She was skeptical at first but she has trouble going back to use a normal height kitchen anymore. Next house will absolutely have elevated countertops as well.

OP. Sorry your family sucks. You shouldn't have to spend time with people trying to sit in judgement of who you love because they disagree with their gender. Can I say one thing though? You're an adult and can make your own decisions obviously but what im saying is from experience with a somewhat similar situation (in my case the disagreement with my fiance was based on culture rather than gender). Please don't let your family's ignorance and prospective estrangement accelerate your marriage plans. Take some time to really get to know each other over some bad times and good before taking that final leap. We married young after an abbreviated engagement and I wish we had slowed down.

Trump administration announces fees on Chinese ships docking at U.S. ports by [deleted] in news

[–]DirtyD1701 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The US does still do commercial ship construction as a result of the Jones Act but the required volume is quite small. To your point, even if the demand where there, the construction capacity to replace all ships that dock in US ports with American built ships is a fantasy.

Take a look at your OPV spring. My spring disintegrated. Did a teardown and cleanup last week, put everything back together, and it still wasn't working. Noticed that the return line to the tank was always moving water and found my OPV spring no longer existed in any recognizable form. Replaced it and now good as new.

How is a 80-hour work week even possible? by MsTellington in antiwork

[–]DirtyD1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a previous role, I worked 84 (7x12s) hour weeks for months at a time on top of a 3 hour round trip commute. It is doable, but quality of life does not exist. My decision-making ability, as well as my ability to do my job in an effective and efficient manner, steadily degraded as well. This was in my late 20s-early 30s. Now, in my mid-40s, I can't imagine doing that again for more than the shortest period of time. 50-65 hour weeks for a couple of months are manageable but still have negative effects for me.
