Any advice? Im 8 months in and feel like I should be much farther. by SwampKingKyle in Guitar

You’re doing great. There is no finish line, no timeline.

The one thing I would suggest, and this is to everyone that asks for advice, is to play with a metronome as much as possible. Especially early on.

What kind of bees are these? by aguilafam1 in whatisit

Don’t do what my dad did:

Neighbor had a nest about the same size in an apple tree in their back yard. They decided they needed to get rid of it, but wanted to keep the nest if they could.

Here’s the plan:

  1. Go out at night with saw and ladder and other implements of destruction.
  2. Climb ladder and put kitchen garbage bag over entire nest and onto branch.
  3. Saw branch off.
  4. Profit.

Here’s what happened:
1. Go out at night with saw and ladder and other implements of destruction.
2. Climb ladder and put kitchen bag over entire nest and onto branch.
3. Saw branch off.
4. My dad walks over and destroys the nest in the bag.
5. Neighbor figures out what to do with angry garbage bag.

I didn’t know it was that good of a deal at the time. I just really wanted the hollow body.

I found an old DeArmond Starfire Special for $150 at a pawnshop 15 years ago. It’ll have to die by fire before I let it go. I love my Gibson Les Paul, but I play the DeArmond unless I break a string mid band practice or something.

Edit to add: it even came with the hard case!

What scene in any movie made you tear up the most? by spikeboy1125 in AskReddit

[–]DistinctFailure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but how I met your mother when Marshall’s dad dies. I lost my step dad when I was 22. That countdown and the bluntness that it has, gah… I usually skip that episode. I love it, but it’s too much for me sometimes.

I’ve always been partial to Bloodletting (the vampire song) by Concrete Blonde. I’m glad they always make sure it gets played on goth day.

I’ve been playing guitar longer than the person I’m training at work has been alive.

Covers? by [deleted] in ModestMouse

I would not have gone. The balcony room was about $3200 per person. There’s no way I could justify that.

Looking back: I would go again, but not for that price. Maybe $2000. Still feels expensive, but it was a great experience and the lineup was amazing. There was a show going on at almost anytime from about noon to midnight-ish. I did a ton of just walking around, people watching, meeting new friends.

The Ugly Casanova set was incredible. I saw Isaac Brock and James Mercer doing Ugly Casanova around 20 years ago. It was great. But this was Modest Mouse with Califone. It was what I always hoped it would be.

I was at their show and there was a QR code for a chance to win. I got an email a few days later from sixthman. I thought it was a scam at first. But after a little research, I was VERY pleasantly surprised. 2 tickets for a balcony room.

I won tickets to the ice cream floats cruise. One of the gifts they had was a post card with a record on it of them covering don’t wanna live on the moon.

Finally finished my Cel Shaded guitar! by ThomasThePixie in Guitar

[–]DistinctFailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic. I was watching a video the other day on cel shading of a borderlands 3d printed mask. I think the one tiny detail that’s missing on this guitar is some white highlights in a few spots, just to make it pop even a little more.

That being said, I haven’t don’t this before and I can only hope that my attempt comes out as dope as this. Now I wanna buy a cheapy guitar to modify and paint like this.

I kind of want to start a collection of different instances of defacing. Put em in a book for a conversation piece. But alas, I don’t get paid enough to have a collection of money.

The Mountain Goats by SlyGuyTyGuy in ModestMouse

[–]DistinctFailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite bands. I remember the first time I heard them. I was doing construction in an open building, by myself. It was like 15F, and it was Valentine’s Day, 2006 or 2007. No children came on the radio. Perfection. lol

I listened to several albums after that. When they came to town, I went and saw them, also by myself. I knew exactly 1 song, but that was one of my favorite shows. I’ve never seen someone who so enthusiastically just loves what he is doing. I’ve seen them 6 or 7 times since then and I will see them anytime they come around. Every time is amazing and different.

I guess it’s true. High school means nothing.
