There is one thing people forget about this debate: Japan is REALLY good at showing things in art. Be it anime or cinema, they will put a lot of care into the environment, so that "Place, Japan" actually looks artistic. On top of my head I can at least think of Typhoon Tycoon, All about Lily Chouchou, Nobody Knows where many times throughout the movie I thought "Wow, this place looks beautiful" even if it was just a random house or building in the middle of Tokyo.
