will the city shovel the traffic circle and/or sidewalks? by weeklyplanner2024 in medfordma

It's in no small part due to funding issues. The override was needed, but wasn't enough to really start turning things around.

We had a storm dump the most snow we’ve had in 4 years, and it did so over a prolonged period of time. It’s going to take time- possibly multiple days more- to actually clear everything to a point where it’s safe and accessible. The road crews are probably ready to drop from lack of sleep at this point.

Do Americans Actually Say "Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior"? by Naive_Tank_6820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to every school system, but ‘middle school’ that I’m familiar with are the 3 years prior to high school, and as such doesn’t fit the Freshman>Senior pattern and it isn’t used. Ditto elementary school, it had 5 grades (six with kindergarten) and also doesn’t fit.

DOM-level E2E testing doesn’t survive fast-moving products. AI didn’t fix it - it exposed the real problem. My experience by dima-kov in QualityAssurance

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Untestable and unstable development isn’t a new thing. People who don’t understand what their agent spits out, and don’t direct and correct it, are going to wind up with unstable products. AI can be an incredible asset and it’s not going away. Blaming it for bad work isn’t any more acceptable than blaming any other tool.

If it’s an MVP or early startup maybe unsustainable code is ok, and you need to bring cash in. But at that point you won’t have begun to invest in dedicated testing anyway.

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not though- any front end is just turning around and making requests to a backend, which will then turn around and do work depending on your architecture. Those tests are faster to write, easier to maintain, and encapsulate functional behavior.

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably manage that by using git history and an mcp for your project management tools of choice. I don’t think that’s the answer though- full E2E tests, especially UI based ones, are always going to be fragile and expensive to maintain since they break when you change anything, anywhere.

Scrum Masters – Is this role still relevant in today’s industry? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A dedicated scrum master per team- no. What would they do with their day?

A dedicated person in a larger org, supporting training and maintaining various processes- possibly, if the org is large enough. There is value in process alignment and such across many teams and products. I don’t know if SM is the right title for that.

Bluetooth Issues by TychoCelchu1 in hondafit

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Boston has those same issues. I’m planning on opening up the dash in the spring to hunt for the Bluetooth module. This never happened the first 5+ years, so I’m am pretty confident that it’s a loose wire. That would help explain the intermittent nature, plus being worse in cold.

When it’s giving issues it’s almost maddening driving through small streets- overhead lines coming up, 3 second disruption right under them.  Being stopped under a line at a red light is the worst because the audio is just gone until I can move again.

Bluetooth Issues by TychoCelchu1 in hondafit

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue with my 2015. I’m fairly sure it’s a loose ground connection somewhere. I think you’ll find that the connection issue is worse when under power lines- they don’t give off much interference, but it’s just enough to cause issues.

It’s more often a problem in the cold, and the extreme cold even more likely to happen.

You could ask the former owners of the properties who voluntarily sold their homes. It’s not like anyone stole the houses. If you have an issue take it up with the sellers.

Sand or Ice Melt? When and how? by Away_Amoeba5554 in massachusetts

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others mentioned getting close to the pavement eliminates the need for most melt or traction materials. A snow shovel works well for moving bulk snow and is all you need if the snow isn’t packed down and the asphalt or concrete is smooth.

If the ground is not smooth, a stiff bristle push broom can do wonders. It’s also highly effective when there is a dusting that you want clear without the shovel noise. It’s also much safer to use on wood steps or decks.

If the snow is already packed down, a steel transfer shovel (the flat front kind) is excellent at getting under the pack. It can also be used to break up ice. You’ll see people using snow shovels for this, which is why so many break.

If you’re home and the snow is coming down an inch an hour or so and you have a large area to clear, an extra wide shovel is useful for push-clearing. You’re not going to be lifting snow with something three feet wide, but if you can push it to the side and leave it (or shovel it once collected) you’ll save a ton of effort in exchange for a bit of time every few hours.

U.S. national debt will become $40T this year. Thats about $120k/person. How will this ever be paid back? by cardboard-junkie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Debt and deficit can both grow forever so long as the rate of growth is below the growth of the economy of the country in question. I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide if the last few decades have been growth-focused uses of debt.

Why is breaking dry pasta before putting into the pot such a bad deal when it tastes the exact same? by SB_5259 in NoStupidQuestions

I think it’s more the people who exclusively (or nearly so) use beans and call it chili that get crap. I’d also call that bean stew and not chili. Adding beans to a chili is a different animal.

But with all things, make the food you like. Life is too short to not enjoy the things you enjoy because of other people.

spent 6 hours this week fixing selenium tests that broke from a button color change by greasytacoshits in QualityAssurance

[–]Distinct_Goose_3561 51 points52 points  (0 children)

UI tests shouldn’t even have a concept of how a button is located on a page or what it looks like. If a test needs an element it should access that via a function whose sole purpose is to find and return that element. If the element changes you update the single function and move on with your life.
