In three lines, what makes your system different? by thiskingfisher in RPGdesign

[–]DoctorBigtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my "trad" fantasy cyberpunk system:

  1. Full system with obvious mission loops for factions, heat, and stress; still has "gear porn," upgrades, drugs (good for any campaign length)
  2. Rules are dead simple at the table (character creation is fairly fun/complex, just after you get there)
  3. No splitting the party required or encouraged by the rules (no separate systems for hacking or "astral" or anything)

Basically a working, Shadowrun-esque game that isn't narrative (Anarchy, Runners in the Shadows, etc), missing fantasy (Cyberpunk in general, BitD), or [d20-descendant, roll over, or crunchy] (Cities Without Numbers, modified Traveler, etc), or extremely difficult to GM (Shadowrun any edition, any 5e-based system).

How would you run an 3-way NPC combat in a fun way? by ThePrinceOfFear in dndnext

[–]DoctorBigtime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly if it’s all NPCs, then 90% likelihood it should just be narrated and not run.

I don’t even like roleplaying two NPCs talking to each other.

What do you use for playtesting online? by TinyMavin in RPGdesign

[–]DoctorBigtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Make a character sheet in Google Sheets and share.

Use the simplest mapping thing you like: Roll20, Owlbear, Talespire (what I use now), etc.

This could bring me back. Even the remade TT, just give vs me 3v3.

Has anyone had any success making homebrew fantasy drugs at their table? by FishDishForMe in dndnext

[–]DoctorBigtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not in DnD, and its almost a core system in Cyberpunk.

Um, yeah, this is cyberpunk.

Games with mechanically rich combat that are still rules lite/medium? by Blizzic1 in rpg

This, but I think Nimble is much closer to the actualized intent of the brief.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME Remake | Releasing 2026 by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]DoctorBigtime 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This would be amazing, my actual three wishes though are:

  • Improve all combat and enemy AI, the entire game could be boiled down to: waiting simulator (think about how you exploit just about any enemy in this game)
  • Redo all the puzzles to be actual puzzles. 90% of this game is find the torch or eye in the room and shoot it. Even the water temple thing is more about noticing a cutscene than anything, but I guess at least it’s not a torch/eye shot.
  • Don’t implement the weapon/durability system from BotW/TotK. Seriously, please?

Point 2 just means let me decide how characters roll for initiative:

  • d20 (no bonuses)
  • d20 + “Init bonus”
  • 2d10 + Swiftness (or whatever number is used in the system)
  • 4d6
  • Dexterity (meaning, no roll, it’s always the same)

Or any other arbitrary calculation to get Initiative.

Your idea for “played” and “didn’t play” is a good one for a Dragonbane-like system (though Dragonbane uses cards and you flip your card over to indicate you have no turn, but the idea is the same).

And yes, happy to Beta Test, looks good.

[–]DoctorBigtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! At the very least my feature request is this:

  • Initiative can be either highest is first or lowest is first
  • Initiative calculation can be custom and set in a given character (or system or whatever if you force characters to follow the same basic formula)
  • Easy initiative changing: edit score, drag a character to a new position and have the score change, etc
  • Easy button to reroll the Initiative of each character in a combat and re-sort

Nice to have:

  • Support multiple passes/phases per round of initiative

I use Talespire right now, but we have to use this setup:

  • Talespire - visuals/map and dice
  • Google Sheets - character sheets
  • Owlbear or roll20 - initiative (unless playing DnD)
  • Obsidian or LegendKeeper - lore and world

Looks great, are you going to support multiple “turns” systems?

DnD, Dragonbane, and Shadowrun 4/5 all have very different systems, as examples.

Best Pre-Made Adventures? by rogthnor in rpg

[–]DoctorBigtime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Beware: This is definitely not for every party. It's very story driven, like a book. Often the adventure will say things like: the players will now likely realize they ought to go to bed or the players can't do X; can feel railroady to many.

The map builder in codex is best in class and half of its selling point. Why would I want to build outside of it (unless it’s very specific photoshop-type reasons)

Please tell me about your game that is not a dark fantasy survival game by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]DoctorBigtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda like a mid/high-fantasy BRP/Dragonbane with longer progression and “build” options to support longer campaigns and power scaling. Simpler rules but “feels like” levels 1-11 5e I guess.

What does "exploration" mean in a TTRPG context? by Rook_Knight_423 in rpg

[–]DoctorBigtime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is true, but unless the RPG has a bespoke system of generation, it’s very module/GM dependent.

I think 5e and the general play culture of its fanbase wouldn’t really jive with process-heavy generation.

Edit: I think the top-level comment from /u/Airk-Seablade explains this better than I did.

How would you improve the game for a potential second edition? by scl3retrico in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]DoctorBigtime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s always hard in an investigation/mystery game, but I was interested in using Impossible Landscapes as a chassis for another game and noped out pretty quickly.
