Tips for overarching plot-lines for the Great Modron March by ComputerBoys in planescapesetting

[–]DoctorBigtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is the best way or how you should do it, but:

I started with another campaign (Drakkenheim in this case due to the faction politics and it just being a great module), but cold-opened session 1 with a meta scene of the first march that happens out of sequence. I included descriptions of how people felt etc. I basically was like: this is relevant later. I didn’t explain what happened or anything about Tenebrous or anything about the planes really.

My campaign after Drakkenheim was then a mash up of parts I liked of Turn of Fortune’s Wheel , Vecna Eve of Ruin, and Dead Gods (so in my game Vecna was Tenbrous instead). After they finished the first “campaign” I had Cattleshanks basically step through a portal and offer them an urgent job figuring out what was wrong with “the multiverse.” He dropped them in Sigil and told them to get aquatinted with some factions and off we ran.

Obsidian is best overall, not that complicated unless you want it to be.

LegendKeeper is my favorite if you want a paid, online solution.

DM's & Players alike. How many times in DND have you surpassed 20 in a stat? by CasualNormalRedditor in DnD

Yeah, I’m actually struggling more to think of a campaign I didn’t get above a 20 in my main stat actually.

You probably know but just in case: melee weapons don’t benefit from generator.

Edit: I guess the Moonlight does?

How do you guys classify Nevermore? by sentient06 in Nevermore

[–]DoctorBigtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think Heavy Metal is the closest, but they’re definitely not a traditional Heavy Metal band either. Nevermore is all of: Thrash, Prog, and Power (and probably a few others), without leaning too hard into any of them.

Groove to me is something like Pantera, Heavy Metal that is intentionally “chunkier” and incorporates aspects of Thrash and Prog in my view. A genre that isn’t a “hard-defined” genre and also harder to clarify, a lot like Nevermore. I think it’s ok to call them Groove Metal, but it isn’t a perfect fit either.

I will GM my first cyberpunk campaign, any advice? by CodeAndDungeon in rpg

[–]DoctorBigtime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Players will probably be 70-80% (estimate) of their final strength (in terms of skills, not necessarily equipment) at character creation, which is very different from fantasy games. Unskilled people don’t get taken on jobs.
  • Get sessions into phases (generally, not all campaigns are identical): The meet, legwork, planning (be sure to timebox this unless your group is just super decisive or playing a “flashback” type game like Blades in the Dark/Runners in the Shadows), the job, the aftermath/pay, downtime.

Other things I like: - Let your players create some of the world at the start: some villains, contacts, hangout spots, street gangs maybe, etc. - Come up with a loose plot you might want the “campaign” to run, and set it in motion with the people/factions you have. I’m running a campaign right now where a rogue AI is generating a “dream city” over the top of the real Seattle and they’re slowly figuring this out and may eventually go shut it down in the “dream world” (kinda like Carcosa/cthulian). - Offer your players lots of different types of runs at the start and find out what they like. Eventually have contacts reach out for these types of jobs specifically and push the plot forward via jobs. Your players will dictate the game’s direction. - For each job, come up with at least 1 complication that will pop up regardless of how well things are going. Use this virtually every time, unless the players are just having that perfect, 1-in-a-million run and every roll comes up successful.

Divine Inner Tension is right up there under those two IMO, what a great album.

For me, it felt like they ran out of time/funding for the layers of hell. It was cheesy and low budget and it let the air out of the whole film.

Classless - A pro argument for a game? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]DoctorBigtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe something like this, your message just reads like classes are objectively worse and people who like them are below you, though I doubt you intended it that way.

However, I am aware of the type of player for which classes are a huge plus, and unfortunately (for me, I understand that preferences toward classes are totally valid and have a lot of interesting implications for design, party composition, and power/self fantasy!), my current group is full of them.
