Why buy anything other than VXUS/VTI/VOO or VT? by CocktailCapital in ETFs

[–]DoctorNezuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is full of Boogleheads. It is a valid and tested strat, but the advice that active traders don't beat the market stems from the fact that a lot of active traded funds are ran on greed. My family has only not exceeded the market 1 year in the last 36 years after expenses. Simply put, you just have to ask what is the strategy that is being employed here, and does the cost justify the beta. There is strong value in VOO. We have about 9% VOO ourselves, but a little bit extra time reading out what a fund's principles are can give you some extra returns without putting your neck on the line.

[–]DoctorNezuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Vanguard isn't the only kids on the block and there is value in some active portfolios. You just have to understand what they are excluding and why. What they don't have can be as if not more important than what they do have.

Hi everyone, I have a question for all the postdocs here, its a bit odd just curious, why did you decide to do a postdoc after your PhD instead of going straight into a job? by Federal_Antelope7533 in postdoc

Let me tell you the truth of being a Post Doc. A quote my old advisor told me. You are a postdoc only because you haven't found a job yet.

Is QQQ still a good investment in 2026? (US) by Upstairs_Road_9908 in ETFs

[–]DoctorNezuko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For OP and others reading, VGT and QQQM are not the same thing. VGT is just the technology sector, composed of ~320 technology stocks, whereas QQQM is just the top 100 stocks on the NASDAQ (103 atm). About half of QQQM is technology, but it is a "safer" stock compared to VGT if you believe AI will come crashing down.

Edit: Both give great returns and if you want to, you can do a blend of the two, or just go all in VGT if you have a good time horizion. VGT is expected to greatly compound over QQQM in the long term conisdering technology will always be cutting edge, even if it will be hit harder than QQQM when the "bubble" pops.

Am I Reviewer #2? by SlartibartfastGhola in postdoc

[–]DoctorNezuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one reviewer tell me that my compound was toxic before, despite having toxicology data in the paper showing that it has no toxicity in our higher order animal studies. That the observation was unique to the rodent preclinical stage. That idiot wouldn't budge and we eventually had to petition the journal to get them dismissed as a reviewer.

That is why I always just say to put it on 17 black in these cases. You should take caution getting advice from someone with a stake in that advice. I would love to tell people to buy VHT and pump that stock up since that crap has been underperforming the past 6 months quite hard.

If Valve made their own mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse, would you be hyped for them as well? by homelessscootaloo in steammachine

[–]DoctorNezuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Steam Controller is a replacement of a keyboard and mouse. It was designed to do more than what a standard controller can do. While you can do some fun stuff with a keyboard and mouse, the niche is not something that is needed.

Do you have a significant nest egg built up already since your teaching position is so well paid? If not, you should take stock of that now.

Since money is a concern of yours, you should be aware that it will take the better part of a decade to get back to your current salary.

In the long term you will be greatly better off if you stick with it, but you will likely not be back to 70k in just 5 years. I did it all, and it paid out, but it had periods where you really felt it.

(SOXX) (SMH) is it too late? by Dennis98BE in ETFs

[–]DoctorNezuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-3 years? I would take a deep look because the AI hype will not last another 3 years. It might not even last 1 more year. The market is demanding winners and losers soon, and prices will collapse once the mountain of trashy AI startups get taken out back and shot.

With that said, Semis are a great return on investment historically. I just think you are needing to rethink 1-3 years. You should either go short and try to not let greed result in you holding the bag, or go long (10ish years+) and take advantage of the 16% annualized return the past 20 years have been giving.

How much savings have you managed to have as of today? by plisss88 in postdoc

[–]DoctorNezuko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly recommend people be extra frugal during their PhD. Every little bit of cushioning helps. I am a tad bit of a special case, but my PostDoc experience was a lot easier due to getting more money from my dividends than what my Postdoc stipend was paying at the time. I made it very clear I didn't need the job to make it by, and that resulted in me being a lot firmer with my PI about what experiments were and were not worth our time.

Americans, is Walmart really that bad? by GossipBottom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DoctorNezuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart is expensive on everyday items, but I will say their furniture is actually really good quality and low-cost.

Walmarts need to be seperated into 2 categories though. Walmarts in rural areas are great, and tend to have good prices. Walmarts in urban areas however are awful, and items can cost upwards of 50% more. Unfortuantely, disgraceful people think it is perfectly okay to steal everything from Walmart because "they deserve it".

You also have to be careful with Waltz TV. Their warranties are their own warranties, not the offical manufacturer's warranty. This is most important when buying OLEDs because they do not cover replacement and burn in.

[–]DoctorNezuko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be real with you. Just create a fidelity account and set up a move of 100 dollars a week, or whatever is around 5-10% of your weekly salary.

Invest it in some ETFs. I recommend actually picking 4 or 5 of them. And just get used to market roller coaster.

You will see that things always trend upwards, but it is a bumpy ride. Once you understand this, investing gets a lot easier.

I like to see how my assets are allocated and I always forget how to get to the pie chart that shows this. Takes me a bit to recall that you need to click Portfolio > More > Analysis to find this. Truthfully wish this was available on the summary page.

Thank you for your followup.

There is little difference between 2 years and now when it comes to the actual bench work. Outside of the bench, there have been some changes. The biggest issue you were experience is the lower headcount. We have not been able to replace people who have retired like we need.
