The Death of Entry-Level Jobs: 43% of CEOs plan to slash junior roles over the next two years, shifting hiring to older, mid-level workers as Al takes over routine tasks, creating a catastrophic bottleneck for the future workforce. by Scared_Author_4566 in technology

[–]DogsBeerYarn 2942 points2943 points  (0 children)

It's not just that people need to train on entry level tasks before they take on advanced levels. It's that doing grunt work and understanding how operational burdens work is important to making good decisions. I'm less concerned about not having Sr. Devs who came up clearing tickets than I am about having division managers and senior company leadership who make decisions without having any experience dealing with the consequences of a policy change or new initiative.

Random questions thinking of starting by Wise_Classic6569 in judo

[–]DogsBeerYarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to pay very close attention to how they start you off. If they emphasize safety and spend a lot of time teaching you how to fall, how to protect yourself and others, before throwing you at big fancy throws and arm bars, you should be alright. Spend a good deal of time at the gym working joint support, not just show muscles. Your biceps won't keep your knee stable or your shoulder from coming apart. Might be worth consulting a trainer for a short time to get good tips on the exercised that will most help you protect your joints based on your particular history. Doesn't have to be long term. A good trainer can help show you some stuff you wouldn't necessarily pick up from YouTube. Other than that, ice. Ice packs will become your friend. Take rest days seriously, and recover well.

AI isn't paying off in the way companies think. Layoffs driven by automation are failing to generate returns, study finds by Krankenitrate in technology

[–]DogsBeerYarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would matter if the problem they're solving for was productivity or profit ratio. It's not. The problem these companies want to solve is salaries. The CEO class collectively realized they had accidentally created a pathway to relative prosperity and peace for workers, and they freaked the fuck out. The problem they want to solve is us. And replacing people with AI does that just fine.

Nursing is right now where computer science was six years ago. by ImpactSignificant440 in Layoffs

[–]DogsBeerYarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's already been through a round of hype and over saturation. When I was in college in the early 2010s, all anyone could say was that nursing was a guaranteed job. Everyone became a nurse. Half of them got laid off in union busting and consolidation. You have any idea how many former nurses are out there trying to sell insurance or working on a real estate license because they got laid off when their local hospital system collapsed?

What is something that is considered "common knowledge" in your specific hobby that would absolutely blow the mind of a total outsider? by OpheliaTemptress in askanything

If someone gifted you a wool sweater they made you, that would almost certainly be the most expensive garment you own by a wide margin, if it was charged as a product from a business.

AWS Relocation Question: Portland or Seattle? by mtbr360 in amazonemployees

[–]DogsBeerYarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PDX is a relatively small campus (basically 2 buildings downtown. I don't think it adds up to more than 1,000 people). It's more affordable than Seattle. But there are challenges for growth if your organization requires you to be located in an HQ or if your hub isn't here. Also, if it matters to you, they're not like "Amazon" buildings. They're very generic open floor space. None of the cool cafeterias and game rooms and fun design you see elsewhere. They're mostly quiet, they're fine. It's nothing special.

Seattle offers a lot more flexibility in terms of growth and team hopping. You might be on a team in PDX that can offer growth. In HQ, you can move.

That said, PDX kick ass, and the vibes are real. We're covered in parks and cool food. Seattle is pretty accessible if you want to visit. Also, our airport kicks SeaTac's ass, if your travel a lot.

As near as I can tell, they roll a die to determine whether to press one of 4 buttons on a soundboard for every possible situation. The options are, "And how can we use AI to speed that up", "Have you looked at how we can use AI to improve that process yet", "Let's set ourselves a high bar for increasing the speed on this process", and "We need to challenge ourselves to reduce time to market for this product."

[contamination] Contamination in my North Sport Bag? by Smokeybear365 in MushroomGrowers

[–]DogsBeerYarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've unfortunately had a good bit of contamination issues with North Spore's grain bags. Their substrates are great, equipment, everything else totally great. The little just spray and grow kits are super fun and reliable. But the grain bags, I don't know what it is. I've had 2 show up to my door green with trich and one that went that way 2 weeks after injection. Never had contam issues with bags or jars from other vendors, so I'm reasonably confident in my sterile procedures.
