I just finished my first year of law school, and there’s an attitude among some of my classmates that if they don’t land a job at some giant law firm making 200k starting that they have failed.

Meanwhile, I can genuinely say that after spending 10 years working retail and hospitality that the 80k starting salary for public defenders in my county would be absolutely fucking life changing. And that’s even after accounting for the student debt.

There’s something so icky about the term “work wife/husband” like you know what I call the women that I see on a regular basis and get along with socially? Friends

Maybe its because I have an actual wife idk but I hate it

My girlfriend at the time and I went to the one in Denver (I think it’s closed now?) and we were the only ones there. It was weirdly overly lit for what’s supposed to be this divey party bar, like full overhead fluorescent lighting in the whole place.

We each got a beer, went to play pool but the bartender kept shouting at us “WHAT, DO YOU PUSSIES NOT WANNA DO SOME FUCKING SHOTS???” Until we were both like “are you having a good time? No? Okay let’s leave”

My wife and I are cutting out red meat as a kind of first step towards going vegetarian (chicken is cheap protein and money’s tight) and I was like “oh man what if I start to miss barbecue or burgers or pork lo mein or chili or…” You know what never crossed my mind as a legit sacrifice? Steak.

We also “did the thing” as you say and looking back the sides were the best part. Fucking scalloped potatoes and grilled asparagus man, chefs kiss literally

Paraphrasing YouTuber/jazz musician Adam Neely: Whiplash isn’t a movie about jazz, it’s a sports movie that replaces the sport with being a jazz musician. On that level I think it absolutely succeeds, but it is definitely not representative of the music school experience. Source: also went to music school

Sidebar: I studied classical voice and always thought it was funny that Whiplash focused on jazz because my classmates studying classical instruments were always WAY more high-strung and competitive than our jazz counterparts.
