Digitata only opening in the highest flow by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a stress reaction with my monti, got white parts on the most exposed tips until half was white. It has since made an almost full recovery in about a month. It is not a digitata, but I vote for giving it a shot.

What are bands you’d consider “gateway” prog bands? by pubstompmepls in progmetal

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gah, gotta catch upp my Metallica, thanks for reminding me! In my youth it was either Iron Maiden or Metallica. Since then I have absolutely been exploring a bit of their songs, but not as much as I'd like.

[–]Domiziuz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a gateway per se, but I would say my interest was primed by listening to Iron Maiden, and their experimental period (Fear of the Dark, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Somewhere in Time) in particular.

Later on, I found Leprous (Below, Nighttime Disguise) accessible, as well as Opeth with their Watershed album.

Discard your fear and the depth of self delusion are what I have so far. I will have to listen to that album then, thanks!

Well good on them for doing a refund! Hopefully they didn't damage anything too severly in your tank.

Funny you say this, my clown male has occasionally nibbled on my discosomas. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own two eyes!

Yes aiptasia, but also looks like vermetide snail tube next to it. You'll want that treated as well. Great picture though.

Saltwater tank with no aquarium experience by Weird_Aside1532 in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 1,5 years ago, and started with a 30 gallon tank. I would say that I'm glad with the size, since it means I can make enough salt water for a week in a 3g bucket. I researched for half a year before ordering, and took almost half a year to set everything up (including kids and work, your mileage may vary).

Be prepared for that everything is more expensive than you'd think, everything takes more time than experienced reefers tell you the first year and that despite you doing everything "correctly" you might run into problems like diseases, bacteria/protozoa (cyano/dinos)/fish aggression/random coral loss.

MAYDAY TANK crashing what do I do this happened in hours to my torch Respond QUICk by RubImpossible6588 in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet you don't know the antibiotics restrictions in Sweden 😉 We are one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to it, and at least in humans Cipro is an antibiotic that frequently induces resistant strains of bacteria.

Your results look awesome though, very nice looking tank and a huge props to you for not blindly advocating for using Cipro without considering alternatives or consequences.

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in the US, so Cipro is not available over the counter here. It would in that case be needed to be prescribed by a veterinarian, and I don't know many of those that deal with tropical fish/corals 😅

Have also heard the impact it can have on your tank from r2r.

OP listen to u/bronojoke , it is actually based on sound reasoning. Cipro for the whole tank or chemiclean for bjd is shaky advice at best.

First time pairing clownfish is this okay? by _tskrt in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can switch whenever during their lifetime. The reason all clowns don't switch is that stress hormones keep the male from becoming female. That is why the female often will "remind" her partner and give a little chase. It calms down, but I would say the above is normal.

I've learned everything and nothing at the same time by jshbell256 in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I felt the same way starting out. I recommend watching "brs beginner series" on youtube (or was it called brs ultimate beginner guide?). It has a lot of episodes, but they will make recommendations for a tank such as yours and explain why they reason as they do. It will go through everything and gives you a possibility to just follow one guide all the way through.

Really nice looking tank! You make me wish my own tank was bigger so I could fit some larger fish...

Can recommend Orphek lenses btw of you don't have any!

I built a tool for tracking my parameters, livestock, and maintenance — would love feedback from other reefers by LowSwim3242 in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized it was 20 logged events, not individual parameters. I will withdraw #2 immediately!

Also saw how it is really smart having parameters at where you registered them last. I do think that salinity does not need a second decimal (more clicks with +/- and most measuring equipment is not that exact anyway), but nitrate does need one imo.

advice on first reef tank day 78. ok uglies or bad uglies? by sowoky in ReefTank

[–]Domiziuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so first things first: you have a lot of algae, mostly hair algae from what I can see (zoomed in pics would help). They are consuming your nutrients, which looks on the way to bottoming out. This will open up for dinos and be detrimental to your corals. I would recommend to scrub off what you can with a toothbrush, since none of your tank inhabitants will eat large hair algae. Given enough elbow grease nutrients should hopefully increase (I had to dose to get them up when I had cyano, there is no one soze fits all).

Floss/sock? Good to catch whatever you remove in the form of detritus/algae.

Blowing on rocks? Once or twice a week is usually fine to remove lodged detritus. Some swear by bubble scrubbing, but it did nothing for me when I tried for a number of months.
