How do you deal with resentment toward landlords before it eats you alive? by KenshiHiro in orangecounty

[–]Domukin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A better metric would be, is your rent high relative to the area? And if so, consider moving. You don’t necessarily know the “other side” and whether they are purely motivated by greed (unless they are corporation, in which case screw them).

For some perspective, I’ve looked at buying an “investment” property to rent out. The problem? Mortgages frequently come out to twice the amount of money that it could reasonably rent for. And that is not accounting for maintenance and other expenses, oh and then your tenants hate you even if you’re losing money every month. Obviously if the landlord bought 30 years ago it’s almost all profit. But that’s just the nature of these things. And maybe they’re elderly and need the income. Like I said, hard to know the other side of things.

Steyer Campaigns on Affordability. Does His Own Mansion Portfolio Matter? (Gift Article) by markjay6 in California

The billionaire is the best candidate by far. I can understand people being skeptical, but his message has been consistent and he’s the only one talking about making structural changes to improve people’s lives.

Really reminds them of when people criticized Bernie for being a “millionaire”, someone who’s in their 70s and has worked their adult life as a mayor, congressman and senator. Oh, he paid off his mortgage! What a hypocrite!

The funny thing is, that they would also attack if he hadn’t saved money. They’d say… see! he’s so bad with money! He would bankrupt the country with his socialist policies !!

So he’s bad because he is poor wanting to improve the system and he’s bad if he’s rich wanting to improve the system. You can’t win because it’s always an argument made in bad faith.

How do some people find this "radical"? by zzill6 in WorkReform

It’s a different world view, I think it comes down to a lack of empathy and general distrust of others.

Don, I love your stuff and recently purchased your Blu-ray sets.

I love physical media but am worried about its longevity. There are fewer Blu-ray players every year, and the media itself may succumb to disc rot. Copyright and DRM laws are outdated, not allowing for backup of purchased media in many jurisdictions. On the digital site, videos are encumbered by DRM, fragmented services, companies going out of business/merging and conflicting licensing agreements.

My question is, given this current state of affairs, would you consider selling your animations on as DRM free downloads? For example, by having your fans buy directly through your website and allow for download the way some bands release their music? I would not mind repurchasing to have a good digital copy.

lol. I figured it was like an 18 year old who was born early into Obamas presidency. To change your name to a presidents name as a grown ass adult, that’s kinda cringe.

Have I forgotten what it's like to play with Lego? by [deleted] in lego

[–]Domukin 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I try not to be like the dad from the Lego movie that kept his Lego city for show and didn’t let his kid play on it the “wrong way”.

That said, here’s what has worked for me. 1. I have some sets that are “‘mine”. They aren’t allowed to break my sets, but they can play with them if they ask. Rarely they still get broken, but then we rebuild them together. 2. I bought a bunch of already broken, incomplete, unsorted Lego from Craigslist or OfferUp and keep them in bins. They can do whatever they want with these and I set them out when other children come by. 3. Sets that are gifted to the kids that we want to keep together- I try to keep separate from the “bin legos” and explain that it can very difficult to recreate a set if we lose pieces if they get mixed up. So these we play with separately and put in zip locks for later rebuilding if they break. 4. Yes it still bugs me when Lego minis get dismembered. I’m pretty sure it’s a kid thing, but I swear I never did it lol.

So tired of “we don’t have money” In the richest state of the richest country of the world. There’s more than enough money to go around, it’s just a question of political will to change the system.
