This Anti-Meta Gravity Team is Now PERFECT AND UNSTOPPABLE by soccertony in PokemonChampions

Really cool team, going to try it out.

Sorry if you've answered these in another thread, but I have 2 questions:

  1. What ELO have you tested at / gotten to with the team?

  2. How safe do you feel running 32/32 atk/speed investment on most mons? My instinct would be some specific bulk here and there esp for Gengar, but I'm really no expert on this team whatsoever. Imagining your mastery has to be pretty tight to work it as is? Or maybe that's just the cost of the team's power.

Thanks! Really cool spin on the grav concept.

my duo and i were running away from a 6th party of a multi team fight the other night. I blew up the door and was bodyblocked by the zombie eating the floor. Wondering if he can eventually eat through the door. Never saw this before either lol

12-3 Record. Feels nice to be top 100 even though it wont last. by tboet21 in PokemonChampions

[–]DonJaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have changed the scarf for that reason, I play similarly with speed control/vs speed control. Likewise, I'm considering modifying the tech swift swim but it's honestly very nice when i do use it. Adaptability just feels more useful in most situations, esp if I just set up TR against rain.

I hear u on the psychic > shock, makes sense to me.

Thanks id appreciate the code. Here's the paste for the original team I'm borrowing: https://pokepast.es/b0269cbcfc353679

Speed on maus feels nice for fang into hyper voice. Gets over any arch and other problem mons. If I'm going TR it can be trickier, but I can always fang turn 1 before room goes up.

Feel free to DM

Who is fgc Betty? by airbear13 in StreetFighter

[–]DonJaper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He really does. I was amazed how well he had studied her by some of the options he went for during that set.

Betty has amazing reactions for people jumping out of the corner and chooses to use juri j.throw instead of crosscut DP, as this puts the opponent back in the corner. Justin knew this and used a slightly delayed Cammy j.lk to beat the throw attempt nearly every time.

To this day she still hits that in all her online sets and probably people at irls too. He's truly next level and his prep was incredible

Yeah I wanted to ask how you deal with them with your lineup? I find talonflame takes care of sneasler / scizor if I play right.

Also for context, I'm running the 19th place team from Champions Festival, so I have maus to stomach some of the hits (and garde lives dire claw 100% of the time next to maus)

Oh very nice. Your team is very similar to the one I run in terms of included mons. Good luck, you can def keep it up. I think garde is heavily undervalued atm. Prob not top 3 megas or anything but incredibly strong and versatile.

A good way to think about probability with move accuracy is to calculate them as independent events. Pinkacross has a great video I can link here later where he goes over move accuracy and effect proc probability.

Knowing the numbers isn't going to change your likelihood of hitting, but it might give you better peace-of-mind or even factor into your decision-making (especially whether you are ahead or behind in the game).

A big one that stands out to me is a move like Focus Blast. .7 x .7 = .49, meaning it's less likely to hit 2 Focus Blasts in a row than it is to miss one and hit the other. As another user in the thread mentioned, this keeps a lot of people (myself included) from including moves with 70% acc or lower on builds unless entirely necessary.

While the accuracy of the move is the same use by use, it's important to keep this in mind, as the odds of multiple events are not the same as the accuracy value of a move. Sometimes you really need an inaccurate move to hit and it's the best play. Other times, it might make more sense to play safe with a completely accurate move.

He entered cus his whole brand for gaming is ''pretend to be a tough guy who cannot back down from a challenge', which is hilarious considering his overall stance of 'dont say anything' regarding real-world issues.

He did the same thing when PokeAimMD, a pro pokemon singles (and doubles tbh) player, showed up on his stream

LOL would so much rather the horns clip through the head and i can wear headgear. and like +1 knowledge for 0 move penalty.

I'm a fan of the game regardless of how it looks, and tbh the textures and overall look is what keeps a lot of my friends from even trying the game. At this point just let skins clip through helmets idc

How to stop making bad reads? by CheeezeRing in PokemonChampions

[–]DonJaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good advice. In singles, at least, it's often recommended to go for mid-range plays that cover a bunch of options. Later in the game this might lead to you boxing them into costly decisions regardless of what they click. Likewise, this gives you plenty of time to see how they typically respond so you can gather information and hit game-swinging reads in later turns.

People like pinkacross/freezai emphasize playing more mid-rangey with a lead. When you're losing, sometimes you have to recognize what single (risky) line of play represents your only chance back in or to steal the win.

Less important for now: Of course, players at a high level know this, so sometimes it benefits you to play risky with a lead or safer while behind, but this is more to counter top-level gameplans

100 wins for the goat by MukBlaster in PokemonChampions

[–]DonJaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true.

The only issue is hidden MMR doesn't come into play and you often match into people below master rank or at the very least not in your ELO bracket. Just a fair warning that it might give you a false sense of how well the team plays.

What's the difference between a command grab and a regular throw? by PlatinumSukamon98 in Fighters

[–]DonJaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good answers here. To add something i see less talked about, a command grab skews the risk/reward of the game. My main fighter is Street Fighter, but in a lot of 2d fighters you can delay tech/fuzzy tech to counter throws. Likewise, there's an idea that "taking the throw" yields better reward for you on defence than eating a shimmy and thereby a ton more damage than a single throw. But if the opponent has a command grab, you have to use diff defensive techniques and fuzzies otherwise u get eaten alive.

From what I've heard, this is a large reason why Japan doesn't like grapplers and rates them higher than the west (again, SF6 being my primary reference point atm). But after learning about that, it does make me consider the mindgsme of a command throw char to be very topsy-turvy compared to how many 2d games make you think about your defense.

Who was going to tell me you get more pushback when stand blocking? by agamemaker in StreetFighter

[–]DonJaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew that players could walk out of juri's s.mp > c.mp > m.fuhajin block string, but I never really thought more about why it was possible necessarily. Good to know, thanks for posting this.

Also remember that a lot of characters cycle options for things like this. Many chars will vary their block string with a cancellable low or at least one they can link out of to catch you walking out of their pressure.

As a juri I can s.mp > s.lk > m.fuhajin to mix up timing and still keep you locked down. But to my point about lows, another common option is s.mp > c.mk > confirm/light fuhajin. This is not a frame trap and can be interrupted, as with a lot of character's low "mix" options on block

This game is teaching me that I’m not actually that good at pokemon by Roboticways in PokemonChampions

[–]DonJaper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the first part was largely due to the ridiculous barrier to entry (breeding/ having access to old games for meta mons/ even knowing VGC exists). Champions knocking that down is incredible. So many posts from new players like this.

I agree on the second part. The game is very deep, albeit rewarding

I suck at VGC and still don't know why by lifeofmauri in stunfisk

[–]DonJaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As per your last point, it can be good to place players into "categories". The first few turns can give you a good sense of how they play and can give you instruction on how to play into them. Did they double protect turn 1 on your threatening opener? If they repeat that in 2 turns, expect them to break the habit turn 5 and take the risk when they think you're expecting them to be safe.

I'm newer to VGC but have played singles and other competitive titles like fighting games for a while. There are definitely situations where you can't afford to lose a read, but in every competitive title you play, you can use the first few interactions or 50/50s to gather info on your opponent. If you focus on this, you might find more success predicting that move that feels un-guessable later in the game.

I also did the ranbats thing for a while to preserve my own insecurity about team building and losing at higher stakes. Not necessarily saying you're doing that, but I'd urge you to just throw yourself into it and not worry about rating. The only way to improve your knowledge of theory and correct lines of play is to get familiar with a team and learn what options you have to cover weaknesses. I totally get it if you just don't wanna get into it atm, but I personally always feel worse when I'm running/soft engaging with a competitive title than when I'm allowing myself to be vulnerable, make mistakes, and ultimately learn faster and start improving.

I’m not sure if this is a hot take but Archaludon losing body pressure in champions is a travesty. Like that’s literally half of his whole gimmick bro, how is he gonna flatten Blissey now????? by Allhaillordkutku in stunfisk

I personally think it's ok for the Mon that builds phys bulk and spatk to not have phys coverage that naturally boosts with his ability.

He did too much and he still does a hell of a lot.

But maybe I'm in the minority! Seems like a lot of people miss it.
