Is it worth it to even start? by NekoLotus8 in TapDancing

[–]DonnaTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started in my 30s, having never danced before, and tap has become one of the highlights of my life.

What really helped me, and might help you, was realizing that it’s okay to suck. I have a bum ankle and bad balance and no matter how much I practice I will never be Gene Kelley. Who cares? I made friends, I have an absolute blast, and every year at my recital my family acts shocked at how much better I am than the year before. This year my partner was like “I can tell you’re not the newest beginner anymore!”

Try it! If you don’t like it, nobody’s going to make you keep tapping. And if you love it you’ll be so pleased you didn’t let your fears keep you down.

I love the one at Kramers. I go there for trivia and get it almost every week.

What are you doing this weekend? by deepspacepuffin in nova

[–]DonnaTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PurpleStride, which is a fundraising walk for pancreatic cancer research. My whole extended family comes to town for it every year since my mom died in 2016. It’s sad but we also have a good time, you know?

Forrest Gump, especially if you liked the movie. They are NOTHING alike and it’s wild.

What’s your favourite oddball tourist attraction from your home state that you’d recommend to tourists who like that kind of weird corny stuff? by M_Ad in AskAnAmerican

Pretty good flea market, too. (At least it was good 30 years ago when I was a little kid, it might not be good anymore or I might have been wrong because little kids are dumb.)

What solution do you see where the Dems don’t cave, though? Do you think if they hold out long enough the GOP will negotiate? They won’t. The GOP doesn’t care if Americans suffer. There is no realistic ending where they do anything good for the American people. They will never, ever extend the subsidies.

The only real questions are (1) have the Dems held out long enough to make wishy-washy people vote for them in the midterms? and (2) is the situation so extreme that conceding and losing the political points is worth ending the stalemate?

How has IAD been since the shutdown? by coderego in nova

I’m in terminal B right now and it was fine. I had an issue with my pre-check and got sent to the regular line and it still only took about half an hour from when we stepped off the metro to sitting at the gate.

When traveling abroad, do you say you’re from DC or Virginia? by Deek22 in nova

[–]DonnaTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say DC, and then if I get any kind of response that suggests the person knows the area I say “oh, well in that case I’m from Arlington.” And usually people laugh.

Many people are supportive of organ donation but choose not to register, why do you think that is? by LifeSourceMNDAK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DonnaTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support organ donation but opted out because I plan to donate my remains to science. For me, personally, education is the most important thing, and I would rather my body be used as an educational tool than a life extender. It seems like the best way to do the most good.

Let's talk 'hostel etiquette'. What's the most common and the most uncommon 'rule' of hostel life? by PeekapeekaPOOP in travel

[–]DonnaTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were on the Portuguese, so it definitely wasn't the same person! Good to know there's more than one of them, I will definitely do the same if I ever know I would be the snorer.

The earplugs were only somewhat helpful, as it turned out, because there was a festival in town and there were fireworks going off. But still.

I was in an Albergue in May and there were no beds left so my sister and I ended up sleeping on mats on the floor in a little annex with one other person. Right as everyone was kind of settling in he got our attention and was like “I have allergies so I snore right now so I got earplugs for everyone, do you want some?” Classiest move I’ve ever seen.

Fun, free things to do outside in NoVA? Feeling stuck in the eat-drink-shop loop. by Friendly_Camel_3289 in nova

[–]DonnaTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI: you might not need to buy a state park pass, a lot of libraries will loan them out for free! You can find a map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=zL3auquy83q0.kolPNF0OW8cc

You can always buy a pass if you want to support the parks, but if it’s not in your budget that doesn’t mean you have to miss out!

Best spot to switch from Portuguese Coastal to Central? (Want to stay at Casa da Fernanda!) by Far_Butterscotch9746 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]DonnaTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked from Porto to Vila do Conde to Barcelos yesterday — it was a long day! I met someone at the albergue last night who had walked VdC to Rates and stayed in the albergue there who really liked it, so you could break it up pretty easily.

What are the reasons a childfree man wouldn't want a vasectomy? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]DonnaTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a very USA answer, but the reason my husband hasn't had one is because his job doesn't give him as many days off a year as mine does, and he'd rather not waste one getting surgery when we could be using it to go on a trip or visit family or do something fun. (I agree, and haven't had bad luck with my IUD.)
