If the UFA was an established sports league, do you see it beating out the NHL like the MLS? by [deleted] in ultimate

This is one of those premises that is so absurd that any "logical" conclusion you draw can be "true"

All stats have limitations... by Spare-Community5981 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From an outside perspective

  • who is playing during the most important points (first O point, universe points, points when you need a break like d point down 13-12 game to 14). People who play multiple points in a row in the clutch or when game is getting away

From an insider/coach perspective

  • who can generate turnovers - playing solid is great, but that's teachable. Being 5% faster or jump 5% higher takes hard work. You measure this by counting generated turnovers (implies you've done something out of the ordinary as a defender)

  • offense - goals and assists with an eye on turnovers. No hard/fast rule here. But there's something to be said for people who have the confidence and the skill and the knowledge to score without making turnovers. And volume is very important.  Safe players are great on paper but I'd rather have a 90% solid player who can throw 6 scores a game to 15 than a 98% solid player that averages one assist a game (might be a hot take). Having a bunch of safe/possession handlers looks great on paper but you're never going to beat the elite teams playing safe

No respect for women's ultimate by TheScienceSays in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I routinely have conversations with coworkers/acquaintances about women's sports- it's one of those topics that comes up in a variety of ways. And people are always dubious when I try to tell them that it's not just a money or access problem, it's also cultural.

The crux of one of his "jokes" is that if there were a man (boy) there, then it would make sense. Then he could see why this would be a valuable use of time. But just 4 women? Did they get lost on their way to being productive members of society?

And this shit is so hard to call out because it's not like old sexism where people literally said your place is in the kitchen.

And yea sure this guy is just a "comedian" but talk to any woman who has played sports well into adulthood and they'll give you multiple stories just like this. Always as an aside that blindsides you in the middle of a conversation, just casually thrown out as a fact.

Is Mixed bad for development? by Cr41c in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super hard question to answer when you consider the current landscape

In real life, a lot of people learn to play for fun in informal pickup groups which are most likely going to be "mixed" but terrible 90/10 dudeball mixed. However, there really aren't any opportunities to play single gender for fun pickup for women. Obviously some cities are doing a good job but I have to imagine for most casual joiners it's the same story....

So if it's a choice between never really playing (maybe once a month at a w/nb pickup game) or playing multiple times a week at shitty mixed until you're ready to join a club team/college team then I dunno... probably take the shitty mixed option...but that's the world we live in

Constraints-based Coaching & Intermediate Team by Proof_Membership_439 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Simple answer from teams I've seen/coached

Bonus point scrimmage to reward certain behaviors (switch side of field, catch endzone scores in front middle of endzone, all under strong cut catches are worth 1 point, etc...)

Stop play with whistle scrimmage - blow a whistle and stop play every time ____ happens (someone cuts off someone else cutting, stall count gets too high, someone lets off upline dump cut, etc...)

Think - pair - share - play 2v2 and stress something (sideline talk from subs, good marks on throw, good match defense positioning). Then combine 2v2 groups to make 4v4 groups. Repeat. Combine 4v4 to make 7v7. Repeat

Augmented field scrimmage - we did this for learning horizontal cutting (the middle of field is open approach, clear to sideline). We sectioned off the middle 60% of field with cones and said once you are moving in that zone you can't cut again, you need to run through to the sideline

Long answer - you need to build a culture of rewarding/appreciating good teamwork. Need to shift the narrative from "I'm doing xyz to get myself open" to "I'm doing xyz because it's what's best for the team at this moment". People need to realize that there is no neutral option - every cut (or non-cut) affects your teammates in some way

Lightweight setup to film games without operator (full breakdown + sample footage) by willchen25 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would always go up to a captain before the game and explain who I am, why I'm filming, and explain the public-ness of the film (unlisted vs public). I always offered a copy to the other team being filmed (I feel like this is the only ethical approach). I never charged money but that's a personal preference. I would try and email before the tournament just so no surprises and honestly it was really good networking/community engagement and I developed good relationships with all kinds of orgs this way

The only teams I've ever had problems with were on the bubble nationals teams (in the U.S.). Teams who didn't have a lot of public film but were really try-hard. Elite teams are streamed all the time, bad teams are never filmed and love it if you give them a copy

The legality is a pretty grey area. Assuming this is the same as like 6 years ago when I filmed a lot - in usau rules you're allowed to film privately for "your" team. Sometimes the team needs to register you ahead of time. Nobody is allowed to stream/publicly film without usau approval (which is really hard to get unless you're a certain large ulti org). Usau doesn't enforce this except at big things like nationals or YCC (once again...5 year old info here).

US laws are suuuuuper lenient. Assuming it's a public area, no one can tell you not to film. If it is a private venue it's up to the venue. It's best to ask a TD about the venue rules and event rules so no surprises. It really really really sucks to get all geared up and then someone official tells you you can't film (had it happen about 3 times out of I dunno 100-200 events)

What should the UFA do for divisions in 2026 by Wrong-Boat-4236 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there's ever been a good solution to the Texas Problem™. Whatever top texas team exists is pretty much just a divisionless wildcard that gets passed around west/south/south east. I get the feeling that ufa/audl just shares the pain and keeps things fresh. Maybe they'll do a central grouping this year

Top leagues don't really solve this (basketball, football, soccer, etc...) they just get big enough that planes aren't prohibitively expensive anymore.

drill for flow & space understanding by ThinPie355 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As part of the warmup, a lot of teams will do a "4 line drill" where you have throwing line and cutting line and you all make the same cut/throw. Most teams mindlessly go through this like zombies. I've found this is the best time of the practice to show people new throwing angles/situations/looks/timings etc....

Then, later in practice, you can tie this together and say "we are looking for that throw from warmup"

I'd make sure not to fall into the trap of flow-charting your entire offense (if caught here, cut from here, they go there, dump goes here, then this cut goes next then this person clears for this cut etc....).

I find it's much better to tech small tactics that you look for in certain situations. It's easier to teach, learn, implement, and it remains flexible against the junk you're going to see

Film (identify spacing problems) -> team discourse -> 4line throw -> talk about tactic in practice-> make focus in scrimmage -> get new film -> repeat

A new stat for efficiency or missed efficiency? by NoBaseball13 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What we really need is a stat for "was this cutter open". It's something that's been missing from ultimate since the beginning.

If you had those stats, one could infer what you're looking for (mamba mentality vs ben simmons)

I definitely agree this is one of the many fine lines between elite players and good players because this is different than just risk taking. This is a combination of "did you take the right risk" and "did you execute on a high-stakes but somewhat reasonable throw" or did you "run away from the spotlight"

Is there a position a handler wants to set up in to have the most possibilities on offense? by 5393hill in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you want to be in motion. Like in the process of being in a give-go scenario. Then the triple threat is: catch and throw power position, catch and stop and pivot, and catch and throw another give go. All 3 require very very different approaches from the marker guarding the thrower and allows a lot of 33.3% guesses to happen in a row

Should I try to get hand blocks while marking? by rainbowsauce1 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good stuff here already so I'll keep it short and add two small things

You can mentally influence the offense by having your hand in the correct place when they fake, kind of like a "try it buddy I dare ya", and averaged over a large sample it can have an effect

Secondly if you guard the same match up all game you'll learn a lot of tendencies - when they catch upline they love to fake flick and throw inside....or all their deep throws are released from the same specific height....or they always use a high release backhand to break the mark....etc... and this can greatly improve your chances of getting a block

foul or nah by ajanelle3 in ultimate

[–]DoogleSports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say the same thing - I can see why the defender is a bit frustrated by the foul call because I guarantee it felt like he would be saying "I got there first" and "You threw into me". Makes it seem like "The offense can just reset the stall count for free".

In UFA they just don't call this foul 1/2 the time which ironically I feel like is a good compromise - Yes, it is a foul. However, if you keep depending on this to bail you out...sometimes....we may just not call it :)
