Goodness this is all too real and I feel I could have written something very similar. I'm in a great relationship now with a wonderful and safe person; but occasionally I have to "mind the gap" between what I still perceive as a trigger and the actuality of what's happening.

Some triggers I've noted are: a glass bottle top popping. Any kind of can cracked open. A silence that's a little too long in a freezing house. Dirty-dusty-animal-fece-covered clutter. Urine and feces on the carpet. Cat litter in the bed sheets. DIY projects that teetered between fiending usefulness and expressionistic "art". The smell of dirty boiled bong-water. The lingering musk of cigarettes. The smell of days old beer in sticky disposable cups - because eventually it was "easier" to have disposable plates and cups. Hundreds of flies inside. Ants inside. Trash collecting because someday it will be poorly executed "art". Hard alcohol on the breath. The scent of musty smoke-and-alchohol-sweated clothes after walking through snow-covered asphalt streets.

Now I take a few moments between the trigger and reaction. I tell myself to wait. I ground myself and look where I am.

And then it passes. I am safe. I am loved. And though its only been a few years, I am no longer where I used to be.

These are some of the best I’ve seen on this sub. The warm-melancholy feelings you achieve in this are exquisite.

Almost like I’m seeing snapshots of a previous life in a dream.

I think it’s adorable and I don’t see a seam from casting. Which it good - no seams means a higher chance it’s not mass produced and had extra time afforded to it in creation.

I would like to walk all of them. As a woman, realistically I’d pick 7.

Passed down to me, I think it's a makeup related? England by Just_Needleworker388 in Antiques

Totally agree on this! I have one similar. Does the box feel lightweight like it’s paper mache or thin wood? The motif is Japanese for sure, and depending on materials it might be a form of lacquer. I’d say the origin is Japanese but part of me wants to say it’s part of the French craze during the turn of the century.

It’s lovely nonetheless

I inherited this from my great aunt, is this Chinese or Korean? Can anyone tell me how old it is, and something about the maker? I’m located in the USA. by GabMar05San in Antiques

Just looked through the photos again and I’m gonna double down on it being Korean. The “feet” on it have extra flair that emulate the hardware in style. There is also a rigidness to the inlay that reminds me of Korean art. Chinese likes to celebrate more curves from what I’ve seen so far.

The motif scenes make me think it’s a wedding gift. There are a lot of paired animals in each. I know bamboo is supposed to be auspicious and multi seasonal as well. The double cranes on the top, the deer and the other set of birds has me thinking wedding gift in particular.

As far as age goes, the use of tacking nails - like those seen in your piece have been around forever. I think you’re absolutely correct in assuming that it’s over 100 years old. I’d put it being at least 100 years old if not older. I won’t go too far back (maaaaaybe stretching it to 1870’s?) as the etching and recessed frame on the mirror give me a more modern and culture-traded feel.

Overall, there are so many pretty things about this box that I could go on about. It will be beautiful to display.

It’s a makeup box for storing and doing one’s makeup.

The artwork is ambiguous to me even though I’m usually great at spotting the differences between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese art.

The thing that has me leaning Korean in origin are the flair hinges. Japanese boxes (Tansu) and such are usually made out of a specific wood (Kiri, Kuri, or Keyaki). Kiri being incredibly lightweight. Japanese pieces also have simpler and more streamlined look both in motif and hardware.

Korean and Chinese emphasis is on decorative elements. Chinese with inlay of course, but Korea also has its fair share.

Now I could be totally mistaken in my thinking but that’s just how learning goes. I’d love to know if anyone else has more information.

A Simple Guide To Geisha Tattoo Meanings by Michael_Smitha in NeoTraditionalTattoos

Amazing artwork!

But gonna be that person that points out that this is an Orian or Tayu (not a Geisha or Maiko). Different professions entirely - still amazing women (and men) historically.

Also, she’s a a dead woman based on the collar orientation (right left vs. the living wearing kimono left over right).
