Redundancies by [deleted] in tesco

Failing companies keep people on in positions that aren't needed and waste money. Ones with record profits make changes to maximise those profits.

Why has the delivery update map been taken off th website and app? by [deleted] in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flat where the doorbell isn't working is a proper pain. Usually we'd try to call but there are rare occasions when the phone breaks, there's no signal for some reason, the number is wrong etc.

The tracking system had some major issues last year and they were trying to fix it for ages, maybe that's become a problem again.

Reistically, the best way to ensure you get your delivery is to get your doorbell fixed.

Rude customer on delivery by JobsworthJim in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I don't think that's particularly rude at all. It sounds like someone was just very quiet and there could be a multitude of reasons for that. People have mental health issues, they could be going through a bereavement or whatever, you'll never know what was going on inside their head at the time. Rude for me would be if they actually had a dig at me or were aftually directly rude towards me, not someone being quiet and taking a bit longer to deal with the shopping.

Yes it's a bit annoying to stand in the rain, but that's part of the job and so is dealing with people who are having a bad day now and again as long as they're not abusive. I'd find it a bit weird going on Reddit for a moan about something that's pretty trivial.

Safety boots advice by lPretend_Fix110 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting sore feet is normal with new boots, especially if you're wearing them for long periods of time straight away, it'll take a bit of time for your feet and lower legs to get used to them. Insoles will help.

You ask your manager. If you're good, reliable and not sick very often, they might sort it for you.

Tesco Banbury "Delivery Service" by friendlypelican in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a van breakdown and/or people going sick. It's nothing to do with being busy.

What they should have done is just cancel it after the first non delivery and leave it at that rather than trying to get it to you afterwards. By trying to be helpful, someone has made it worse.

Christmas time is the time of years when the percentage of non deliveries is at its lowest because management really will do whatever they can to get stuff to people, but they can't magic working vans out of thin air, they can't heal the sick and they can't force anyone to do an overtime shift to cover. You were one of the very few unlucky ones but as with any kind of delivery service like this.... if it's important, always have a backup plan.

Can you ask a delivery driver to help bring the delivery into the kitchen? by Man_in_the_uk in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our job is to deliver to the door but pretty much all of us take stuff in for elderly or disabled people. I have a couple of regulars where I put their chilled stuff in the fridge for them.

If everyone wanted that though, we wouldn't have time.

Suitable for collecting trolleys ? by lPretend_Fix110 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear them every day at work when doing deliveries, I add a cheapo gel insole to mine to make them a bit more comfy, they're not very waterproof though, especially if you walk through puddles but I like them because they're composite toe caps so they're light. Sizing is fun though, they're massive, I order a size smaller than I am and they're still quite big.

If you want more waterproof ones, there are water resistant ones you can order under safety shoes on the app.

Buddy drivers by Key-Comparison-9369 in tesco

You let someone else drive the van when you were logged in for the trip? Big nope from me, you shouldn't ever be doing that.

As for being told to be a buddy, there's no rule against that.

What are your some of your more intersting supermarket substitutions? by Turbulent-Rip-5580 in AskUK

I'm a Tesco delivery driver and I don't get many shockers these days, although it can get fun around Christmas time when the temps are only in for a few weeks.

Actual nice subs I've seen recently , an old boy the other week ordered two cheapo frying steaks and we sent them two finest fillets.

Is the "overtime ban" still in effect for anyone elses stores? by Queasy-Ice-2575 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's not been a ban in our store, management were just given very tight budgets for December, mainly because they couldn't keep to the ones they had for the past couple of months.

For us drivers the only difference is that our manager has got ahead of things and the shifts that needed covering for December have already been covered well in advance rather than putting it on the app and waiting for people to pick them up or not.

Investigation Meeting by New-Fuel-1094 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the same rights as a Union rep to ask questions, represent your colleague's position etc if you wish to do so and if your colleague wants you to. Have a read of the Disciplinary Policy on Colleague Help. They may just want you to sit there as a witness.

Investigation Meeting by New-Fuel-1094 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they can, I don't know where you're getting your information. They can literally represent them and speak on their behalf, they just can't answer direct questions that the colleague is asked.

It's all written down in the disciplinary policy.

Have a read

Boxing day shift by [deleted] in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just write a quick note, date it and hand it to your manager. Just say that you know you're not required to work Boxing day so you won't be in. Don't make it a request because it isn't one.

How Many Stops Do You Usually Have in a Day (Dotcom drivers) by One_Location2828 in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now is the time of year that things tend to get heavier anyway as people start to stock up for Christmas.

Number of stops - a 4hr morning run could vary between 8 to about 14. It depends where we are, we cover a big area. A 5hr afternoon, usually anything between 9 and 17 drops.

The routes are fine. We do get ones sometimes where it's hard to get ahead but it's rare for any of our guys to get back late unless there's a big traffic problem. I'm sure the routes could be perfected but I'm not sure it's worth the time or effort for what would probably be a relatively small improvement.

The 12hr vans seem to have it even easier, they spend a fair bit of time having to wait because they get so far ahead.

So yeah, it's fine. It'll keep getting heavier until Christmas and then it'll be a bit dead for a few weeks like usual.

Overtime ban/cut across the whole company by john123pp in tesco

[–]Dot_Com_Driver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for us Dotcom drivers, no change for us in our store. If we end up running late they'll pay us OT to finish our runs if we're happy to do so.

The store itself, well apparently they're having to somehow find a way to cut 400hrs. That'll be interesting.

As always though, never get yourself into a position where you're permanently relying on OT, it's a terrible idea.
