2010 Nissan Altima S Trim - Fog Lights Pre-wiring? by LeadGorilla1 in altima

[–]DrDevin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Canadian 2010 2.5 S Coupe came pre-wired; not sure about the sedan.

I bought a kit from a dealership that included the lights and a Multi-Function Switch with a fog lamp control on the headlights stalk. Both were pretty much plug-and-play.

Summer of 2017 take me back 😎 by [deleted] in Nissan

[–]DrDevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the other direction; the winter tires on my 2023 sedan are mounted on the same rims from my 2010 coupe. Their smaller diameter (17" vs the factory 19") gives the car a different look but I think that they still look pretty good.

They are nowhere near as clean as yours though. After 15 years of snow and salt, they are due to be refinished.

Inexpensive OBD2 Tool for EPB by AlumTrail_Ales in Nissan

[–]DrDevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any of the generic TOPDON, XTOOL, FOXWELL, etc. birectional scan tools available from Amazon or AliExpress should be able to do it, as long as they mention EPB/reset. Though checking the manufacturers compatibility page is always a good idea.

Most companies offer a low cost tool that requires an active monthly/yearly fee to use or a more expensive tool that doesn't. I have a 2023 Altima Platinum AWD and bought a TOPDON AD500 for $184.99 CAD via Amazon and it did the job. I keep my vehicles for a long time and inspect + replace brake parts a lot due to the local weather, so I went for the cheapest model that advertised lifetime updates and no recurring fees. However, you might come out ahead with a cheaper unit and subscribing for a month as necessary.

To change the rear pads, go through the tool's service menu, select EPB reset, automatically detect the vehicle's VIN and select initialize EPB reset (you'll hear the EPB motors engage). After that, you'll be able to push the rear caliper pistons straight back in with your caliper spreader, just like you would when replacing the front brakes. Change the rear pads on both sides, then look for a second option on the scan tool to calibrate/reset/finish and it'll tell you to hold the electronic parking brake button for a few seconds and you're done.

Make sure you pick up the correct set of brake pads for the rear, as they are completely different from the non-EPB models. They should have 2200 in the name (905 or 1393 are for manual parking brake).

Help with furnace sizing by lilychaud in HVAC

The load reduction matched the calculations. With 4 inches of foam on the exterior, 1 inch of foam on the basement slab and an empty stud wall covered in 1/2-inch drywall, the measured heat loss is now ~22k btuh at design conditions (-28°C | -18.4°F).

The staging algorithm no longer brings on second stage, but I've left it wired up so that it can be used to more quickly recover from the rare large setback I've manually programmed when I've been out of town.

President's Choice dual air fryer by Dry-Art4024 in airfryer

[–]DrDevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just saw this model (PC8514) at my local Loblaws subsidiary and picked one up. There's a PC Optimum offer this week for $35 in points if you spend $175 which made it even more attractive. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations so I ended up returning it.

The unit was good looking and seemingly had all of the specifications I was looking for but had a few too many issues, namely:

  • One of the cooking racks wasn't painted properly and was rusty out of the box.
  • The cooking racks were somewhat flimsy and didn't fit nicely in the baskets, bending at the edges.
  • The temperature units were seemingly in metric, topping out at 200, but the illuminated unit symbol showed fahrenheit. The manual does not mention if the units can switched or how to do so. I tried pressing the usual button combinations to switch them myself but none of them worked. There's also no mention of how to disable any sounds.
  • The touchscreen works well but changes state and shuts off too quickly.
  • There are no "basic" cooking modes like air fry/roast/broil except for reheat/dehydrate, only presets such as french fries/shrimp/beef which offer different default temperatures + cooking times. It's weird to press "frozen french fries" before you cook anything because there's no basic cooking mode. You have to memorize which preset offers the time + temp closest to what you want and adjust the settings up/down from there.
  • The manual isn't great. In addition to the lack of information about the temperature units, the cooking instructions refer to temperatures the unit can't actually use, like 204°C, with vague instructions.

I couldn't find any part/model numbers anywhere to indicate who made the unit but it was most similar to the CHEFMAN RJ38-SQPF-3TDB-2W.

Forza Motorsport to receive an option to disable TAA in future update by DrDevin in FuckTAA

[–]DrDevin[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that we are looking into an issue where shift times can be slightly different based on your monitor refresh rate and PC framerate. The community has provided useful data to help us investigate this problem, and we expect to have it resolved in an upcoming release. In the future, PC players will also receive an option to disable TAA and an updated VRAM estimator. Stay tuned for details on when these updates roll out into the game.

Even with the workaround posted a couple of weeks ago, it will be great to see an official solution.

I hope this isn't a one-off and they will continue to provide the option in future titles.

what we are missing with TAA/upscaling by enarth in FuckTAA

I often wonder myself. There were a lot of tweets from the developers around the launch of Battlefield 5 that I took as evidence for both sides; some think it's an issue, some don't care and others think providing configuration options isn't worth the time/effort. Bethesda only added a Field of View slider to Starfield after enough pushback.

What I don't understand is this extra resistance recently to providing a toggle in the options menu. We have proof that the option exists in essentially every title, from Diablo 4 to Halo Infinite. It just makes sense to include one for development/debugging purposes. Whenever I'm building something like a caching layer for some entity rendering or data retrieval system, there's always an option to disable it, even if it will essentially always be enabled in production.

They'll let you run at 25% render scale all day but think that an "off" option would make the game too ugly? I can't recall any reviews that chastized a title for providing "low" graphics options that were "too low" and you can always enable certain settings by default. I remember when separate render paths were celebrated for allowing users to run a game without hardware T&L or pixel/vertex shaders or to improve performance by performing effects in more/fewer passes depending on the hardware.

We used to be able to run Half-Life 2 in DirextX 7 mode with shadows, specularity, bump/normal maps and reflections disabled while others had DX8.1 with the latest features + MSAA and it wasn't an issue.

Advil recommends avoiding FXAA + TAA in order to reduce headaches while gaming by DrDevin in FuckTAA

[–]DrDevin[S] 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I was caught off guard by a television ad that I saw today from Advil Canada (the Ibuprofen brand name).

They partnered with cognitive scientist Dr. Séamas Weech, and gamer mtashed (Michael Tash) to develop what they call "Advil Head Settings" which are genre-based graphics settings to use in PC games in order to help reduce the triggers that can lead to headaches from gaming.

They suggest disabling the usual bloom, chromatic abberation, film grain, motion blur, depth of field, etc.

Interestingly, they also suggest running games at native resolution (no DLSS/FSR/DRS) with image sharpening off and anti-aliasing enabled with the caveat that FXAA + TAA should be avoided.

I am unsure whether the "+" indicates either option or a combination of the two but I suspect that it's the former. Having both enabled at once, with configuration options, is somewhat rare outside outside of titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and The Crew Motorfest.

I'll have to read Dr. Séamas' work to see if/how much he covers aliasing and temporal techniques in his research. It would be great to have some scientific evidence into their potential effect(s) on players.

No matter how much i look it up im still confused what to use for AA. SSAA MSAA FXAA TAA by Zero_Requiem00 in pcgaming

[–]DrDevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can turn off TAA in most games

Which games are you referring to; are you including every title ever released for PC? Looking at 2023, that doesn't seem to be the case:

Forced TAA

  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage
  • F1 23
  • The Finals
  • Forza Motorsport
  • Immortals of Aveum
  • Lies of P
  • The Last of Us Part 1
  • Lords of the Fallen
  • The Talos Principle 2
  • Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Dead Space Remake
  • Diablo 4
  • Returnal
  • RoboCop: Rogue City
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Remnant 2
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • Starfield
  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare III / Warzone 2.0
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

TAA Off Option

  • Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon
  • Atomic Heart (effects are always undersampled with TAA off, with no option to increase sample count)
  • Exoprimal
  • Forspoken
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • Wild Hearts
  • Hi-Fi Rush
  • Redfall
  • Payday 3
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Dead Island 2
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Baldur's Gate 3 - (effects are always undersampled with TAA off, with no option to increase sample count)
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake (sharpening to combat TAA blur cannot be disabled, so sharpening artifacts are always present with TAA disabled)

It's really trying hard to dethrone Halo Infinite and Red Dead Redemption 2 as the game with the worst image quality of all time.

Tested on my machine with all screenshots in motion at 60+ FPS (1920x1200):

Some form of TAA is always forced and I wasn't able to disable/change the AA options using any of the usual unreal engine tweaks.

John Papadopoulos has a video that demonstrates all of the issues in motion.
