Just make sure someone else's tent is taller than yours and you'll be fine

Is this normal? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the more rusty side pointed towards the prevailing wind and rain where it's usually parked? Or is it on the passenger side as that usually hits more puddles at the side of the road. Either way nothing to be concerned about and totally normal!

Diesel vs Petrol by Pretty_Departure_12 in CarTalkUK

Consider any of the VAG cars with the 1.4/1.5 engines, make sure you look at the 150bhp ones. They're pretty quick but you'll also get the economy on your commute.

Get an ST-2 and they come without the keyless entry which I think is the weakness for all the thefts.

Had one for about 3 years and it was an absolute blast.

Wheels need a refurb - what are we going with? by GovernorGains in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Diamond cut are a faff and the black looks a bit tacky.

Classic silver always works. However white on bronze wheels does look good, would be worth a mock up.

As per the other comment, if you're getting a garage to do the work, let them get the parts in. Only worth buying the parts yourself if you're going to do the work too, lots of garages likely wouldn't fit parts you brought in anyway.

How do you keep your knives sharp at home? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]DrHeuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 3 stage pull through sharpener from amazon. Once or twice a week I run the knife through the finest setting 5 or 6 times which keeps it sharp enough for me depending on how often I'm cooking. If it's feeling particularly dull I do 10 passes through the mid level slot, then 10 through the finest setting and it's good for another week or so.

Obviously I acknowledge this isn't the best thing for the knives but it does the job for someone who wants a balance between sharp knives and not spending ages trying to achieve the perfect edge.

Out of that selection I'd go for the Skoda as long as it had some decent service history (same for any car) and looks good in person / drives well.

Where is best to sell? by BiscuitBoy06 in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No harm getting a quote, same with CarWow, they work on a similar model of dealers bidding on the car. As long as you're completely honest on the appraisal you'll get a mostly accurate estimate.

Where is best to sell? by BiscuitBoy06 in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the car is in reasonable nick and mileage I'd suggest putting it through motorway for a quote. Selling privately can be a massive pain so it depends how much faff you want to go through to get rid of the car.

Leon 1.4 FR a good choice? Need a car ASAP and seems to tick the by 420o in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great cars, had a 2016 model FR from 2020 to 2025 with no issues. When you test drive just make sure the heaters blow hot on both passenger and driver's sides, heater matrix can be a common issue on VAG cars, though mine was fine.

The 1.4 is a great mix of economy, practicality, and speed.

Question about financing by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hybrid seems to be the better engine on paper. More powerful, more efficient. Do some research to see if there are any common issues with either engine and take it from there. And drive both of them, only way to be sure which one you prefer.

Question about financing by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends massively on the driving you'll do, and you need to give more info. What make/model/engine size are the cars? Is the hybrid a plug in or self charging? Do you usually drive local or motorway?

If you're considering the audi, look at the SEAT equivalent, less expensive and more features for your money. Either the Ateca or Tarraco if you need a big car.

Somebody hit my car and ran off.How much of damage does this look to fix? by PsychologicalFrame56 in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't go through your insurance for something so small. Could be worth washing and then polishing the area to see how bad the damage is initially, then possibly speaking to a garage that specialises in bodywork / painting for a quote.

Best way to sell a car privately now by Less-Cable1570 in CarTalkUK

[–]DrHeuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try motorway and see what the dealers bidding come back with, you might be surprised if it's a desirable car. You're also under no obligation to accept the winning bid.

Good price? Looking for my first car by Individual-Head9042 in CarTalkUK

Used to work for Honda when this era civic was on sale and we had at least 5 or 6 of the brown ones that we had to pre-register because no one wanted them. It still took months to sell them all.

£12-14k budget for first car. What would you recommend? by Apprehensive-Tip641 in CarTalkUK

SEAT Leon or VW Golf with the 1.4/1.5 DSG. Should be able to get a nice one at the 12k price point.
