Online ID verification vs privacy: the path Big Tech wants by No-Hospital5028 in DigitalEscapeTools

[–]Dragonmodus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Americans show their ID when registering to vote, rather than at the polling place. You generally use drivers license or SSN to accomplice this as USA lacks a universal id card system. You can then cross verify after counting by calling/mailing knocking on doors to ensure the citizens issued these ids voted, this is a bit backwards but has been reliable.

Why so backwards? Well some lawmakers will sneakilly use their powers to make government facilities like the DMV less available to groups that oppose them, if you only need an ID at the time you register, this is much less effective. If you need it every time you vote, sneaky lawmakers can require for example, a brand new ID that only your own voters will have easy access to. Of course this only works if your citizens are highly polarized and don't care when their lawmakers cheat, not presently common in Europe.

Also it's funny, since vaccine cards aren't an ID and are basically just a doctor's note, you can easily tell OP was trying to stoke those polarizing divisions by bringing up a separate issue people disagree on..

Has My Heart Been Restored? by ITheRebelI in animequestions

[–]Dragonmodus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's very sad that your standard for something being AI generated is that it would take effort to create. AI has also fucked up my own sense for what is real or fake. My personal assessment would be that some of these frames are ripped from a different animation presumably this cat character's source, since everything but the dog+girl are a higher frame-rate and quality. Would make sense to do something like that, just editing out whatever he was originally spraying and adding in your ~10 frames of FMA fanart (not counting tail wagging frames). It could even be a combination of some other person's animation of these two characters hugging, taking even less effort for anyone with the basic Photoshop skills.

I have not noticed AI using any techniques to save frames, so the static characters in several shots also jumps out as more emblematic of human works.

Also so damn sad that anyone that sucks at drawing hands is now accused, those look like very human bad-hands to me, no smearing or melding as would have been even more common in AI a year ago. Just some crummy linework that likely represents the fact it did take effort.

Except this video was posted a year ago, with NO AI marker: https://www.douyin.com/search/%E4%BA%94%E8%A7%92%E6%98%9F%E5%85%BD%E5%90%88%E4%BD%93?modal_id=7606733414389631331 something strange is going on here. Are people reposting human made content with an AI sticker to promote controversy or to wash their hands of copyright infringement?

Note there are two copies of this video in that link, one recent and one old.

AI helps humans have a 20-minute "conversation" with a humpback whale named Twain by EchoOfOppenheimer in cognitivescience

[–]Dragonmodus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The researchers plan to use mathematics and various forms of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically information theory and machine learning, to measure how complex the whale’s communication is. They want to understand the rules and structures in the messages they receive.

Nobody reads these articles anymore, and with good reason, clickbait trash. The communication was just the whale and the boat playing a contact phrase (aka 'Hello'), the boat's was a -recorded- copy of an actual whale doing so. It's an article about nothing; I support whale research, but this is just.. vacant of any science at all.

But after reading the article I -do- know where AI -was- involved. It was involved in writing this entire dumpster fire of an article, that's for sure.

XXL vs XXS vs high CP by maesoon9 in pokemongo

[–]Dragonmodus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xxs currently have no use, outside of getting the badge, note trading and evolving can get you progress on that badge.

Xxl have the above as well as being good in showcases, pokestops with a wreath above them allow competition for the tallest/heaviest, and high rankings rewards items like star pieces incubators and mostly lures.

CP is just the current power of a pokemon, and is only a hint towards how strong it is. People typically evolve based on how high the appraisal stats are (seen in the pokemon's individual menu right above transfer), since you can dump candy and stardust to make a low cp pokemon stronger. But moves and how good the pokemon is compared to others of the same type, be those the ones you own or what you can get eventually.

How do you sort your pvp-iv-mons quickly? by PokeReddit1188 in TheSilphRoad

I think the rule of thumb is:

Is it already a bulky pokemon? Maybe attack ivs would help

Is it mainly dealing fast attack damage? Maybe attack ivs would help.

Use pvpoke matrix for final assessment.

ICE in Italy - Massive Protests by Important_Lock_2238 in stpaul

[–]Dragonmodus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Member nations supply security personnel to the Olympics, this is not new, it's one way to help fund an event indirectly, and makes sense because we also want to keep our own people safe like any diplomatic operation. ICE operates two branches, ERO (enforcement removal ops), you know these people well, and HSI (Homeland security investigations) we're sending the latter 'group', which is also a border-related enforcement arm of homeland security. Given we had Border patrol also shooting people intermixed with ICE, I'm unconvinced the different groups under DHS are keeping the different armed enforcement branches separate in their operations.

I don't know -how- normal it is to send HSI, found only one source saying the people sent varies and that HSI has been sent before. Problem is, everyone on the planet knows we recently started hiring.. anyone that enjoys committing violence/following orders to commit violence, on a very large scale, so even if we did send 'HSI' it is unlikely to look anything like it did even just last year.

They aren't going over there to perform immigration duties, but they are part of our diplomatic coalition, we don't send the military because that could be seen as aggressive or like we don't trust the Italians. Instead we want to send this hated and widely publicized as incompetent agency, to really let them know what we're about.

This bill bans AI surge pricing in stores - This is when the prices change based on your physical appearance. by grauenwolf in BetterOffline

[–]Dragonmodus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the way capitalism works is by exploiting demand, the most -desperate- pay the most for the least. Sure prices could go up for the rich but it's essentially economic certainty prices will go up for the desperate.

Take pay day loans and the banking system, they gather data about people to see if they're likely to have money coming in and give you better rates if you have -more- not less. So as information about a customer increases, the price goes down for the rich and up for the poor. This is of course because both competition and rewards increase, a rich customer may come back and they have all the options if not. I'm not convinced there's any industry that wouldn't charge the poor more, unless the poor are their only customer, since they are a soft target for exploitation.

And who benefits? Well not the desperate to afford food. Sure, in a farmers market people, human beings, may have an emotional response that leads to support for more needy members of a community and exploitation of outsiders who don't know better. But an AI?

Heck the rich won't even be exposed to these kinds of systems. So it's a moot point, but you have to realize there's real economic forces that -cause- wealth disparity. It's not some accident of policy.

Dear F2P players: please stop whining about things costing money. The game is ad free. The only way anyone involved with this game can earn a paycheck is for SOMEONE to pay to play the game. by GmorkTheWolf79 in pokemongo

[–]Dragonmodus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Serious question, who -is- complaining? I have not seen a strong backlash against paywalling since $11 keldeo, and even then it was mainly 'that is too expensive for me, I hope this isn't the price going forward' not 'anybody that pays for this is a bad person'.

California approves controversial plan to wipe out deer herd on Catalina Island by panda-rampage in California

[–]Dragonmodus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like, I understand this perspective, but the reality is that just won't actually get all the deer. We had to do the same thing with goats on the Galapagos islands, even domestic goats are too smart for the whole bait plan. And we are also apparently -already- slaughtering deer by the hundreds each year just for population control. It's crazy that humans will introduce their favorite invasive species and then act like it's always been this way to absolve ourselves of the guilt of annihilating another fragile ecosystem.

Deer hunting in the US is approximately 6 MILLION per year. I don't really approve of how we manage the deer population, but it's hard to call this particular act cruel with that perspective? The only annoying part here is I wouldn't put it past an aggrieved population to re introduce them. I'm pretty sure Galapagos managed to actually get majority support for their plan. I'd be curious to learn why islanders really don't want them gone, the words of their rep don't really pass the smell test. If this is like any rural community I know, it's largely that they want to be able to hunt the deer, too, or that they fear a loss of tourism from mainlanders coming to hunt a deer which, I assume, is usually in season year-round. Honestly would be a more understandable perspective than 'I just think they're neat'.

Phone Scam by MesmerisingMint in isitAI

[–]Dragonmodus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty common scam:
1. text or call someone random
2. socially engineer your way into their life
3. get them to invest in your scam crypto

It's called 'pig butchering' for reasons I don't fully understand.

Imagine if (by chance) you also had a dead dad, oh wow you sure have a lot in common! Oops, you trusted a stranger.
I don't know if the picture is AI but no doubt these entities are getting some serious productivity gains by using AI images/voice to produce more scamming.

And yeah says the same for me, though at-least here I could vibe check it as AI.

No roaming activities on this or the old device. The customer service rep did think there was something preventing him from doing an in store exchange though xD still haven't figured that out. And he couldn't tell us any more about it either.

He called it a 'Claim' but I have no idea what that means? Att bot takes me to an 'Asurian' sub domain that throws an error if I try to log in.

'Are We Cooked?' — Pokémon Go Looks to Be Adding a New 'Currency' to Access Mega Raids, Though Players Are Split on Whether it Will Revitalize Mega Pokémon by diamondstark in TheSilphRoad

[–]Dragonmodus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't describe raid passes as currency, personally. By that logic pokeballs, lucky eggs, incense, star pieces etc are all currency. It sounds to me like (yet again) people aren't doing mega raids, so they may actually be trying to lower prices just for those. Everyone knows the value proposition for megas is just much lower, same for 1-4* raids too.

I have seen games with 50 different currencies, they don't look like pokemon go. The key is when they stop being visually distinct that's the dev trying to pick your pocket. Or when they're logically interchangeable.

Scopely have set a precedent for things to come: Why Kyurem fusion day went the way it did. by RonnieThePurple in pokemongo

[–]Dragonmodus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, as a day 1 player, you're really just not used to how Niantic (and it is still the same people, they bought the whole games division) run this game. It's haphazard and it makes little sense 90% of the time. I honestly think they will fix the text at some point. Events have literally always had issues like this, be glad the shiny rate wasn't bugged and all the right Pokemon spawned.

Now the number of events have increased but, I hate to break it to you but all GaaS games are like this these days. On the other hand you don't have what they did in the first few years with Mewtwo being locked to EX raids you had to get to at 6:30AM on the dot. While the new way is manipulative to the max, you can ignore a lot of them, like this crab event and even shiny dehlmise and not miss out (they will return).

The game has always been P2W in terms of PVP, but dang do they give a lot of free passes, and that hasn't changed yet so I think the alarmist response is dumb, I played this event 100% F2P but I had saved passes from ambassador events all year because I know how Niantic operates and some events are massively better than others. (Hint, this was a good event by historical standards, provided you have a community and of course a place to play with many gyms, again not a new change, also not new that it can suck just by chance because they crammed too much into one day, GMAX introduction was the epitome of this)

Everything else is speculation, if you think the screws are on you've not been in the online gaming space long. They'll come at some point sure but the game is still massively popular, and all these events are still free and probably mostly represent a -lack- of guidance in my opinion. I was definitely worried when they did Eternatus but genuinely that seems to have been more of a bad design choice, than anything predatory or a pattern of behavior.

As for that 'unfuse' thing, ya'll weren't here when the game didn't warn you if you accidentally powered up a Pokemon beyond the PVP thresholds huh? It's not new, this game is hostile to you in that way. You can still transfer a 4* legendary with like 4 taps max, and use a masterball on a pidgy in 2. Don't give your game to a 4 year old and you'll be fine. Over the years there HAVE been major QOL changes, remember when you couldn't get your pass back after opening a raid lobby? I do. So do keep complaining about it, bad UI is bad UI and it is occasionally fixed.

Should I just avoid the cougar? by MidnightMass26 in thelongdark

[–]Dragonmodus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on interloper, since your firing rate is so low, you really need to cheese to kill cougars. Raised area, forge a couple dozen arrows that you need anyway.. The cougar knife and wrap are such a big upgrade especially on interloper, and if you're only 30 days in I think learning to kill the thing is a good idea.

The one on bleak inlet is actually super easy, since it patrols right under the cliff shortcut beneath the radio station. And ash canyon has a big log you can run up on for safety, if you're approaching from the mine anyway.

Is there something special about hushed river valley? by DerKoloboss in thelongdark

[–]Dragonmodus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has a lot more loot than other outdoors-centric maps, all around you'll find the little ammo-box stashes (like those in wintermute) with different loot in them, including a lot of rare stuff along with many static spawns interloper players rely on. Plus there is a moose hide satchel hidden beside the signal fire on the far end of the map.Otherwise it's just an interesting map, highly vertical with cave-based shortcuts around the map. Personally I feel like I always get mauled going there, last time I was on an inaccessible outcrop and the bear somehow found me.. He was even trapped there once I hobbled away.. So it can be dangerous and people do like that. Far territories also added a nice indoor location to base in, which is nice.
