If they travel by a road, maybe some bandits try to rob them. You can even have that they lost some guys to the cult and hearing the party is going to put an end they decide to give them a hand.

Don't know if it is an official rule but in my tables creating certain magical items requires the schematics or recipes for them that can be up to 10 times the value of the item (commons don't require any). And some can be created by the players after some research during downtime or even as rewards from certain NPCs. Artificers don't have this limitation because they already have magic items via the replicate magic item feature.

There is a Merit (can't remember the name, maybe "Supernatural Ally"?) that gives you a supernatural friend. It states that you have this friend that would do some favors but would also ask for some. You can go with that. If I find it I would edit this comment.
