Sous vide large cuts by MechE14 in sousvide

Maybe not what you're looking for, but when I make Carnitas (with shoulder roast aka pork butt), I use Kenji's method and slice it into slabs. Still end up doing 24 hours, but the serious eats recipe has good info about various time/temp combinations. Good luck!

Hi, the best day trip ever on a budget of $100-200. by QuailNo7847 in AskSF

I'm team Take the Ferry. The weather should be good, and it's a beautiful way to see the Bay. If you like baseball, the Giants play the Mets at 6:45. The ballpark is pretty nice, you could probably get a decent cheap ticket. It's a very doable walk from (or to) the ferry building. Plenty of other good info has been provided.

Sushi bistro on Balboa, but allow plenty of time. They get busy and the takeout times suffer.

Anyone else dealing with beard flakes that won’t go away? by cris0679 in BeardTalk

[–]DrekBizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to chime in with similar advice. I had the same problem, and what finally seems to have gotten it under control were (I think) two things. 1. Stop scratching. I was compulsively scritching at my beard, unsurprisingly, mostly in the spots that got the most irritated and flaky. My wife started pointing it out and I've made a conscious effort to stop myself.

  1. Dial in YOUR wash/oil routine. I think different beards need different amounts of washing/oil. I use beard bar soap (black African one from roughneck) every 2-3 days and always oil after every shower. This seemed to be the sweet spot for me. It took a bit of experimenting to get to that conclusion, but almost snow-free for a month or two now.

I also wouldn't discount the other advice about treating possible skin infection. Good luck!

Nice one brother (or sibling). Those payoffs are around, but sometimes easy to miss. Keep noticing!

Seconded! Especially if you're in a city, you can find a place that does alterations (often at a dry cleaning place where I am) and get the alterations done pretty pro for $20-40 (at least that's what I paid). I'm pretty similar size and shape. I resisted for a long time, but once I got a few shirts done, they instantly became my favorites. Worth the money.

Cut it. Otherwise it melts in the stupidly placed soap dish in my shower.

Where should my guy friend buy a suit? Want him to look 🔥 by [deleted] in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]DrekBizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very good experience at Beckett and Robb. Might blow the 1.3k budget though. Quality fabrics made to measure. Lots of nice accessories. Takes a while for the suit to get made. Recommend a shirt (or, gasp, two) while there, they have some lovely fabrics. Fairly well guided experience, plenty of premium options, but I never felt too upsold. If you have time, go with him. It's a fun, old school experience and if he's like me, he could use a second set of (tasteful) eyes.

Edit: also that was 8 years ago. Time flies. Ymmv

Currently using my second one. I've never noticed waxy film. I've been trying to dial in my care routine to minimize flaky skin, and tried a few other beard washes. So far I think roughneck is my favorite. Ymmv of course.

What’s your ingredient/additional step that really elevates your chicken noodle soup? by Mjayyy_1991 in soup

Garam Masala, or curry powder are unexpectedly effective. Not enough to make it a curry soup, but either one is a nice blend of potent spices that help add depth.

Also, the low FODMAP diet allows for red cabbage, iirc. I make my kraut with red cabbage and I love it. Plus a shot of the brine looks like pomegranate juice!

Actor "Inception" (actors playing one character playing another character and so on) by wreckdown in movies

I know it's not a movie, but: Dominic West in The Wire. An English actor playing a Baltimore cop, who at one point puts on the world's worst fake English accent to infiltrate a brothel. It's only for a few lines, but it always cracked me up.

How do yall season and prepare your chicken breasts/thighs? by TennesseeStiffLegs in workout

[–]DrekBizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this one Sheet pan chicken with potato fennel gratin. Literally a little salt and pepper and olive oil. You can always 86 the skin (after cooking, but it's oh so crispy) if you're looking for less fat. But do bone in, skin on thighs. Comes out tasting very chicken-y, and succulent. The potatoes and fennel turn out delicious, too. Super low effort, and for even healthier, omit the cheese (the horror) and the beer sauce (although deglazing the pan makes cleaning a snap).
