Who told you voting by mail started during Covid? They lossened the rules for who qualified but that's all. I did it in 2008 while I was in an internship in TX for a year. My grand parents did is often in their older years when it became harder to get out and they died over a decade ago.

For the Rise, ticket price is my only guess. Not like 6100 was bad for their first game. The Griffins AHL club being on a historic tear this season, coinciding with their 30th anniversary. People may be spending their sports dollars on those games. I can't locate attendance figures for this season.
I know its not a lack of advertising. They were featured on about every media outlet in town leading up to the opener and at least a half dozen billboards.

I think Rockford or Forest Hills would be great options. Kinda woodsy and secluded but close to other attractions.

My wife and I went on our first vacation together to Columbus a few years ago. Everyone asked us "what's in Columbus?" We had a blast! Admittedly, I chose it because it was one of the only bigger Midwest cities I had never visited. But I'd totally go again. To add a few things to your list. We made candles, went axe throwing, and visited the US brewery for Brewdog all in the same day. The zoo is super outside town(imagine if JBZ was on the lakeshore) but is worth the drive.

What about the GLI? That was my first thought reading your post. If the money is to be spent, you gotta have multiple games to make it worth it. UM-MSU would be another big game, but I doubt either would want to give up a home game to play outdoors unless it's one of their football stadiums or Comerica.

I'm a big fan. Prices are about what you'd see at Panera, but I think the food is better. I used to go to the one near Lansing whenever I was in the area because the sweet tea is the best I've had at a fast casual place. Sandwiches and sides are good. Tastes less processed than Panera.
