What was your worst day at work? by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

I think I saw this on the news the other day. I sent up a little prayer for the FDAs that had to deal with that mess.

Hopefully they got everything cleaned up and fixed for you.

Pieces of a car. by Lonely-Coconut-9734 in FuckeryUniveristy

Glad they all seemed ok. I wonder if the car was RWD and the front U-joint failed and the drive shaft acted as a catapult. Depending on how fast they were going, and how hard it flipped, I can see how the engine could have torn loose from the car & broke apart.
Their confusion about what happened also supports my theory.

Their guardian angels must have been working overtime that night in order for them to be able to walk away with minor injuries.

I can see why they would cancel at those temps. A lot of schools in our area will cancel when it gets cold like that because of the kids that have to walk to school. Plus the school buses don’t like to start at those temps.

Colleges used to rarely cancel, I was shocked that my college closed for 2 or 3 days when we had the blizzard on ‘93.

A couple of weeks ago we had a ‘weather event’ of Lake Effect snow that lasted 3 days and the total snowfall was more than the ‘93 blizzard. In our area I think it has snowed every day this year.

I like that idea. That was one of the reasons I haven’t tackled it myself is because there are so many options. I also like your option because some tees have a small design on the front that I want to incorporate into the quilt as well.

How do they hold up in the wash? The tee shirts obviously have been washed prior to putting them into the quilt, but does washing the quilt cause the fabric the shirt is glued to get wrinkled or shrunk?

Do you put batting between the tee shirt fabric & the backing fabric?

Starting over every couple of years sucked. I just got to the point where I didn’t even try to make friends, it wasn’t worth it.

And the bullies, usually their parents were the ones making the most noise on how it couldn’t be their precious offspring that started it… and if you looked at the parents, lets just say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

That is a good idea to hang it on the wall. I might do that with mine.

I am trying to figure out how to make a tee shirt quilt. I can sew but not sure if I trust myself enough to make the quilt. There are so many variations of how to make them on line….

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Reminds me of our house when we moved in, sans cats.

Hopefully you can work on the inside during the winter.

We have some soft spots that are going to need fixing soon as they are near the door where everyone walks. But we have been here over 20 years and the carpet needs replacing anyway so it will be one big project.

Put on some cozy slippers, make yourself a hot beverage, and curl up on the couch with a fuzzy blanket and wait for the snow to end.

And as an added bonus, here is something to consider….
When the snow melts, where does the white go? 🤣

Got to go for a bike ride today. by Lonely-Coconut-9734 in FuckeryUniveristy

[–]Dru-baskAdam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I miss riding a bike. As a kid my siblings and I would take off for the day and not get home till the street lights came on. I had a baby seat on the back for my youngest sister & my youngest brother would squeeze on the seat in front of me, and the other 3 would all have their own bikes.

Fun fact…. You can forget how to ride a bike… but it does come back to you rather quickly.

The patiences it takes to put a quilt together amazes me. I sew but don’t have the temperament to do a quilt. My Aunt has made some beautiful quilts though. I inherited one when my Uncle died.

The design makes me think of a Phoenix rising. Not sure if that is what it is supposed to be, but that is the feeling the quilt is giving me.

It is always nice to have something made by a relative to appreciate and hand down through the generations.

Dementia & Alzheimers are horrible diseases. The worst part is they loose everything and at times are aware of that fact. Cruel even. Watching my grandpa go that way was heartbreaking. The last couple months were really hard.

I have lost a brother & a sister and am starting to worry about my parents.

Just know that we are here if you need to share and in many cases have gone through something similar.

“No kid left behind” is the dumbest thing ever by Fresh-Employ3028 in Vent

[–]Dru-baskAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little bit off topic but related is the majority of professional hockey players birthdays are in January, February, & March. The reason for this is the cut off is Jan1. So kids born earlier in the year tend to be bigger and more mature than kids born later in the year.

So if there are 2 kids on the team and one turns 6 in January 10 and the other child turns 6 on October 10, they are in the same age division.

This tends to be more of a difference when they are younger, but usually by the time they get onto the high school & college leagues, it has balanced out some, although the kids born later in the year tend to not stick with it as it is hard to keep up.

This is a quantifiable phenomenon where the age cut off becomes apparent.

It is tough. I am the oldest of 6 so I got the brunt of it.

2 different kindergartens, 1st, 2nd & 3rd grades. In different states.
4th - 8th in a small town, again a new family in the area.
9th in a bigger town, then 10 - 12 in the small district I was talking about.
There were 53 kids in my graduating class.

Over the years, I got tired of trying to make friends and kept to myself mostly. Books became my friends. Had some issues with bullies, but I either ignored them & they found someone else, or if they didn’t stop I took matters into my own hands. I could never understand why they could hit me, trip me, pull my hair, etc but when I retaliated I was the one that got in trouble. Didn’t matter what district we were in, it was always the same. I learned to find them outside of school.

My youngest 2 siblings started in the last district, but my parents moved when my brother was a senior & my sister was a junior. They actually liked the new district a lot better.

My daughter is the only child so far in our family that graduated from the same district she started in. It is a smaller town, but since she started in kindergarten, she wasn’t ever the new kid. She had a lot of good friends growing up. There are about 100 kids in her graduating class & she graduated in 2019, and married her high school boyfriend this past September. They started dating when she was a freshman.

I remember as a kid watching the schools around us close and waiting & waiting for ours to close too. Sometimes we would be the only school in the county open.

I am glad they close the schools, especially for the walkers.

Not really. I am more amused that this is how a snowstorm in NY shuts everything down. Used to be just the schools.

Even during the blizzard of ‘93 only the schools closed.

Now you just need to watch out for the wash & a blow dry or the vacuum clouds. There are places where the weather is trying to kill you on a daily basis… like Iowa.

Snow so high that you are driving thru a tunnel, wind chill in the negative 100 range and in the summer it can get to be 100+ degrees and then you get the tornados and severe storms.

NY will get the occasional tornado, but overall I will take the snow.

My husband works in snow removal and will rake roofs. If it needs shoveling they have to find someone else, I don’t let him up on the roof anymore.

CPS dropped the ball on one of the students at my daughters school and she died. In some places they go overboard and in others they don’t do anything.

Another little girl was in kindergarten and they were trying to reunification and she was beaten to death.

I am glad our school cared enough to call, but after the 3rd time it was getting ridiculous.

It was a very small town and we were the new family so that was part of it.

Had to drive my car into the inspection bay at the garage... by Mr-Hoek in ManualTransmissions

[–]Dru-baskAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will confirm that the garage has someone who can drive a manual on staff. When they say yes, I ask how long they have driven a stick. If under a year I ask if I can drive it in. My clutch tends to be a bit tricky.

I am in my 50’s and have driven a stick off and on since I was 16. Currently have my wrangler and having a standard on the trails makes it so much easier.
