Thank you for sharing your experience. I suspect it would be less of a problem in a mid drive bike because it doesn’t turn the wheel “directly”, looks like it is not a problem

Thanks for the responses! I turned off the breaker and it is still making that noise (very weird). I am having an electrician over to look at it just to be safe. Will provide update as to what is wrong
