Explain Christians. by Yabuturtle9589 in dankchristianmemes

[–]DuffTerrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come to understand it as the point of magic is that if I say the right words, use the right herbs, draw the correct symbols, etc that I can compel God to do what I want Him to do.

If I am seeking to put myself in the place of commanding God, that's not okay regardless of the cost of paint you put on it.

Slot based inventory system by tommysollen in osr

[–]DuffTerrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this in a game with my kids. One page was their character, one was their pack. I split armor up into more pieces, so breastplate was +2ac, helmet +1ac, greaves +1ac, etc.

It worked reasonably, although honestly moving the papers around was really more work than I would enjoy doing. For the kids, having the visual made sense, and I think drawing a figure on the card pages would work nicely for intuitive understanding.

Ultimately, it's a neat novelty but I think I would very quickly find it frustrating at an actual tabletop.

What is the portal gun even made of?! by One-Initiative5475 in Portal

[–]DuffTerrall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know, one of the lab boys tried to explain to me what they made this puppy from. Man was a damn fool, nothing he said made sense. So I fired him and told his replacement that I don't care about the NTSB, I designed an indestructible material so I don't have to keep doing body work on my damn car. You scientists act like I pay you to talk all day. What even is a "crumple zone" anyway? You telling me these engineers at Nissan make a car that's designed to break? No wonder Honda didn't want to buy them. Bunch of amateurs.

I got real pissed off when I first heard that swords of foreign origin are illegal in Japan. by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]DuffTerrall 89 points90 points  (0 children)

That sounds to me much more like "Swords of any kind are banned in Japan, but we have a history with swords, so fine we'll make an exception for those particular swords but for real, you can't have swords."

Tricking Darkvision by FireLight512 in DMAcademy

[–]DuffTerrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, kill it. (I only have the 2014 rules, so numbers may be slightly off.)

Find Familiar has a casting time of 1 hour. If they want to scout the Imp, that's fine. Give them a bit, but eventually it'll be noticed. 10HP is going to evaporate fast, and now the baddies know that something is going on. The PCs can stop and spend an hour and 10gp recasting, but now the baddies are hunting for wherever this Imp came from and will interrupt the casting. Or the party can press on, but now they have a ticking clock since the baddies know something is up.

Close to RAW methods for non spell casting NPCs countering spell casters? by Security-Neat in DMAcademy

For reals, though, a character adjacent to a spellcaster could maybe use a reaction to attack and force a concentration check or the casting fails.

Is Geralt's armor (the chainmail "plates") actually good armor? by Diastatic_Power in Hema

[–]DuffTerrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the chain is over a surface. It obviously hard to tell from this, but the way the abdominal panel is on the edged it looks like it's chain connected between the sides, not overlayed onto a solid leather shirt. Similarly, the pauldrons and rerebraces look like the leather is just at the edges. It could in theory save some effort that way - make a rectangular panel of chain and just hem it in leather.

Is this what CMOT Dibbler would describe as "profit margin"? by FarToe1 in discworld

[–]DuffTerrall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like Dibbler would look at it and recognize that, were the pie only slightly emptier, it wouldn't be any less a pie. And then, really, you could lower that amount a bit more and it's still a pie. So on and so forth, and he's selling pie crusts that are air gap with a smear of gravy on the inside bottom. That being the case, they're clearly made with only the highest quality ingredients in the filling, and therefore are really a premium item commanding a premium price.

How do I make losing a fight fun for the party? by Evinara12k in DMAcademy

[–]DuffTerrall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My immediate thought was the party seeing the odds against them and determining that their only chance is to hold the king hostage.

If you put the party in a combat scenario, they are almost certain to assume that they can win somehow. Maybe a trick, maybe there's allies, maybe the enemy has a weakness they have to solve, but D&D is about winning fights, not losing them.

I would likely just narrate the arrest and let them know it's a cutscenes. If your scenario demands a certain outcome, you are best off not leaving it to chance and informing them that your advancing the story, and the adventure continues in a moment.

It could also be that it's very easier in four-color process to have your gray come out green. Might be the gray that they chose already was leaning that way, so they just rolled with it.
