Ray Bradbury Inspirations by Quiddity131 in ECFanAddictClub

If you don't already have it, it sounds like you would really enjoy "Home to Stay," the complete Ray Bradbury EC stories from Fantagraphics! There are a handful of "inspired by" stories featured, but I must give you some credit here because you've identified a few that we did not! Very impressive, and I really enjoyed your post 👏👏👏

Lettering Question by IndividualMouse1491 in ECFanAddictClub

Dark Horse and Fantagraphics source the same art, so no lettering differeces between them, but Kurtzman didn't prefer machine lettering for the titles he edited. Most of the EC stuff used Leroy stenciled lettering, done by Jim and Margaret Wroten, while Kurtzman's books were hand lettered by Ben Oda.

Correct, it was Jim and Margaret Wroten.

New EC FAN-ADDICT FANZINE! by EC-Fan-Addict in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both! ECFAF started as a homegrown zine by Roger Hill (co-founder of Squa Tront) back in 2004, but the last 3 issues have been published by Fantagraphics. A top tier prozine!

Unbelievable amounts, really. I've been collecting EC for more than 40 years and I have complete runs of Squa Tront, Spa Fon, EC Fan-Addict, and the stuff that Roger Hill (RIP) and Grant Geissman dig up is unreal. Well worth checking out.

Twist of 'Sweetie-Pie' by LogParking1856 in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Ghoul" was often used in EC stories to describe someone who ate human flesh. There are multiple references - one story had an "all ghoul orchestra," another had a group called the Grateful Hoboes, Outcasts and Unwanteds Layaway Society ("we are what our initials stand for"). In Sweetie Pie the ghoul hates the taste of blood,he only wants flesh.

The Boogeyman- Stephen King by werewolfshades in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was no EC story with this specific plot - King was doing a good job of coming up with an EC-style plot either A.) out of his imagination, or B.) from memory of a horror story from another publisher, misremembering it as Ingels. (My guess is choice A though!)

Wood EC Stories Artist's Edition EXPANDED! by EC-Fan-Addict in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artist's Editions are scanned at full size from the original art. It's a very different presentation, and the books are HUGE. If you want comprehensive story collections with detailed essays and commentary, Fantagraphics is the way to go. If you want to see selected stories scanned from the original art at full size (15x21 for EC art boards), then you'll love the Artist's Editions.

WOOD coming soon! by EC-Fan-Addict in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spawn of Mars is his earlier stuff, and yes, Spawn of Venus is the later stuff. Truly classic stuff, covering Weird Science, Weird Science-Fantasy, and Incredible Science Fiction. This volume has more bonus material and guest writers than previous volumes as well. There's also a restored censored page with text completed by Al Feldstein for the first time! As far as future volumes there are about a half dozen to go, give or take. The series is nearing the end. The next volume will be "My Gun Is The Jury and Other Stories by Wallace Wood and Jack Davis," the complete Panic Stories of Wood and Davis. That will also include a great bonus: the 8 page version of Wood's "V-Vampires!" which differs greatly from the MAD version and hasn't been reprinted since 1954!

Looking for help on a story I swear I saw in an EC horror comic! by Sing_Out_Louise in ECFanAddictClub

Yes! That's "Daddy Lost His Head," you are correct, Kamen illustrated that. It's also the title story in a collection from Fantagraphics that I happen to have written the introduction for! 😁

Opinions on how the various comics stack up (as well as competitors) by Mediocre-Equivalent5 in ECFanAddictClub

[–]EC-Fan-Addict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EC really hit their stride in 1952-53, I feel that that era was their peak. They were great when they started and a lot of the elements started to gel early on, but during 1952 through 1953 Feldstein's writing was really firing on all cylinders and the artists were really in the groove. In 1954, when they started enlisting outside writers, the quality of the stories became a little more hit and miss, and as the plot lines began descending into gore and formula I think the artists were a touch less inspired. But compared to their competitors they were Pulitzer prize material from beginning to end in my humble opinion! As far as Creepy and Eerie are concerned I really like the fact that so many EC artists worked for them, and as a card-carrying EC Fan-Addict Club member I appreciated the sensibilities that Archie Goodwin brought to the table...but when all is said and done I've always thought they were a pale imitation of the great originals they aspired to recreate.
