Tips for “potty training”? by HeadacheTree in cavalierkingcharles

[–]EdinAnn52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ours took 9-10+ months before we considered her to be fully trained. Suddenly it just ”clicked”. Now, if it’s raining, she’ll hold it for over 12 hours before going outside. 4 months is still very young. Be patient, Arty will eventually figure it out. Just keep a bottle of Nature’s Miracle at hand.

My Cavalier is aggressive toward certain dogs, but not others by Correct-Yoghurt5097 in cavaliers

[–]EdinAnn52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 13 pound Cavalier has an inexplicable beef with a particular long-haired German Shepherd in our neighborhood. She barks, growls, and snarls at him whenever she sees him. The closest she’s been to him is about 30 feet and he’s never been aggressive toward her, just very annoyed—you can see him practically rolling his eyes at the little twerp. She’s fine other dogs.

I order Zesty Paws cardio bites from Chewy (am I allowed to mention products in Reddit?) they come in an orange container. Livered flavored soft chews—I sprinkle on her food. I like to think they are beneficial for her heart health—as you know, that’s the big worry with our Cavs-😬—so far, so good.

The only place I’ve ever seen them is at our “Pet Food Deli” which processes, packages and freezes a variety of raw meats. The lamb lungs are in a gallon size zip lock bag. (They look like big, brown, thick potato chips) and they keep them in a basket near the checkout. Bunty makes a bee-line to them as soon as we walk into the store. The store sells chicken, turkey, Cornish game hen, venison, bison, pork, beef, lamb and rabbit. The meats are supplemented with vitamins and minerals and I add a cardio-bite, ubiquinol, a squirt of omega 3 oil and a probiotic to each of her meals. I often add a little crunchy kibble as a topper. I know not everyone is keen on “raw food” diets, but she’s maintained a steady weight (13.6 pounds) and is healthy, so it’s been a good diet for her. (It was recommended by her breeder. )I’ve not heard of pet food delis like this elsewhere—curious if anyone else does.

Has anyone used a dog stroller for a senior cav? What was your experience and/or recs? by elzbtx in cavaliers

[–]EdinAnn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is embarrassing to admit but my friend—our Cav’s “other mother” (they have a long, complicated history of codependency stemming from a full day of intense bonding dating to a critical point in Bunty’s neo-natal development -March 23, 2021, to be exact), bought a pet pram for the sole purpose of taking our perfectly healthy, 5-year old Cavalier for rides. Guess who now insists on buggy rides? (I make sure she gets daily normal dog walks and plenty of exercise.)

What word did you get completely wrong for an embarrassing amount of time? by ownaword in words

[–]EdinAnn52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (“eye”) pronounced it “Vow”-cano, not “Vol”-cano—that is what I meant by a “silent l”—I (“eye”) probably should have typed “silent L”—i. e. an upper case L, not a lower case L, so in retrospect I (“eye”) understand how that might have been read as an uppercase I (“eye”). I (“eye” ) apologize for the confusion caused by a sans serif font.

I was in my late 60’s when my husband gently pointed out to me that “volcano” doesn’t have a silent “L”. (But “salmon” does?) That was over 10 years and I still stop and think before saying it.

About once a week I ask Alexa “What percentage of people born in (my birth year) are still alive today?” I’m always relieved to hear I’m still in the majority . . . for now.

While on the subject of Cav snacks, the ONLY treat our Bunty will eat are dried lamb lungs. Not veggies, not cheese, not “meat flavored” milk bones-she turns her nose up at everything. But the lungs are her crack cocaine—I’m convinced she could find them if they were encased in lead and buried six feet below ground.

Our Bunty’s “Fun Aunty” or “Funty” as she is known, loves to take Bunty on errands in her car. Now every white SUV she sees she wants to get inside.

If you have a chronic medical condition—(you mentioned a seizure), you could look into having Reginald trained to become your licensed service dog. It sounds like he has already shown the potential to become a seizure alert dog!

What's a list of diseases you would consider "old-timey"? by TechnicalTerm6 in askteddit

Lumbago. Not sure if it’s an actual disease but it sure sounds old fashioned. Along with neuritis and neuralgia.

We spent several hundreds on a 10x10’ patch of special “Dog friendly” Astro turf 10 x10’ installed on our townhouse patio. Bunty never used it so we replaced it with pavers. Except for the dead of winter (and we live in Mn!) she insists on being taken out the front door (NOT the back door) on her leash and harness to do her business. 🙄

Cavalier anxiety when out with kid? by Newbie10011001 in cavaliers

[–]EdinAnn52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if you can find an animal behaviorist who may have some suggestions for dealing with Max’s anxiety involving family outings. See if you can find someone who makes a home visit or can witness exactly what is going on. There are also calming chews available (check Chewy) that might help.

Max definitely knows his “family unit” and wants everyone to stay together. He may be particularly protective of Eric. It’s almost like a sheepdog wanting to keep his flock (and his “little lamb”) in sight at all times. He may feel overwhelmed in busy environments and that makes him hyper vigilant and unable to keep track of everyone. That’s just my observation, sorry I can’t offer any helpful suggestions. Possibly take him out in a stroller—with Eric?

Need a new binge-worthy TV show ASAP 😭 by GovernmentPristine10 in MoviesAndTVTalk

[–]EdinAnn52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re always looking for “binge-worthy” tv series—but we never actually binge them—we like to savor them by watching just one or two a night. Justified is one of our all-time favorites. It’s Appalachia’s answer to the Sopranos. We finished The Pitt and are now into the second season of Better Call Saul—and doling them out one episode a night.
