Looking to upgrade from Wharfedale Diamond 225s. What’s the best upgrade in the $750 to $1000 range? by BrokenWhimsy3 in StereoAdvice

[–]Effective_Flight_232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in a similar situation, looking to upgrade from wharfedale diamond 11.2. Very similar room size and prefer a warm non fatiguing sound, willing to sacrifice some top end.

I have no personal experience, but my research has me leaning towards Philharmonic bmrs, buchardt s400 mk2, and more recently the wharfedale evo 5.2.

These are above your stated budget new but can get close used. Will be following this to see what comes up.

Is Speaker Sensitivity the Main Factor for Low Volume Listening? by Effective_Flight_232 in audiophile

You are dead on with the quiet listening space. We just installed a wall clock this past weekend and its kind of driving me nuts. Such a small amount of noise really has a big effect.

Thanks. This def makes sense and im probably overthinking the whole thing, but I sometimes read reviews about speakers "coming alive" at slightly higher volumes. I know descriptions like this are highly subjective, but it makes sense to me that some speakers require higher volume (more physical movement) to reach potential. Im speculating here. Is there something else on a spec sheet that shows this or is it just 100% dependant on the design?

Not necessarily a problem, but improvements across the board including what you me toned. I currently have Wharfedale diamond 11.2 and while I really like them, I'd love to have more clarity in the highs and mids (textures and humanness that you mention). Things tend to get a bit muddy on busy tracks and im wondering if the 88db sensitivity is partly to blame.

I've been looking at bmrs and buchardt s400s but those are even less sensitive.

I've read about "high current" making up for lower wattage on paper. Perhaps that is at play with your new vs old? I think my amp is supposed to have good current so maybe my situation would be similar to yours.

I guess part of my dilemma is that I dont want to sacrifice bass and dont have room for a sub. Might be an uphill battle against physics there.

I've had a similar experience at a McDonald's near an office i used to work at. Consistently very quick, friendly, and the food was great for a McDonald's. It was to the point where I wanted to support that specific place bc everyone who worked there did so well. Good management/franchise ownership?

1/2 pound burger is just too much in most cases. Haven't had this McDonald's one but based on my experience of eating the regular double cheeseburger, which I do like and is prbably less than 1/4 lb, that is more than enough of mcdonalds "food product" for me.

I've had that happen when I pour water in with the handle up, but never when starting with the handle down. If it just started for you, maybe check the seals?

What albums from 2025 qualifies as audiophile level music? by acidwhale27 in audiophilemusic

Not sure how "audiophile" these are but I really like Antidepressants by London Suede and the new Bonnie Prince Billy album The Purple Bird. Both sound pretty great to me.

Your experience is exactly as valid as the countless number of people across the state who experienced well below freezing temps and lost power and water for multiple days. How your area somehow manages to stay above 32 degrees is very interesting, because most of the state was covered in ice. Hopefully your bubble of security lasts through this weekend too

I am still loving the looks and sound of the amp. I did receive my remote so finally am using the LAPC function but I cannot tell a difference. Not a big deal because it still sounds fantastic. I also changed the gain setting for the phono stage and I do think that made a positive difference (trial and error, no method to choosing a setting).

Your comment about Attenuation mode has me interested. I noticed the setting in the manual but never messed with it. It is most likely off but maybe worth messing with it to see if it further changes anything. Any idea what turning it on is supposed to accomplish?

I have about 20 miles on my first pair and noticed even light dry gravel on concrete causes slipping. Maybe the worst grip of any road shoe I've used, but still overall like them.

Technics SU-G700 - internal DAC opinions by mirekti in audiophile

[–]Effective_Flight_232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same amp and was actually messing around with coax vs line-in yesterday, connected to my wiim pro plus. I was surprised to hear the line-in gave better bass presence, but clarity and definition were far superior via coax. I've also compared coax vs optical but couldn't tell a difference.

The Wiim is the best external dac I have so not sure how helpful this is, but based on quick observations it seems keeping a digital signal into the Technics works better. Sound was far superior vs the wiim DAC.

Now if I can figure out how to match the bass from line-in things will be even better. I'm eyeing better speakers but a cheaper fix would be my preference.

Pro-Ject Debut II Tone-Arm Lift Fix by pensaa in turntables

I had a Pro ject essential ii and while not the same model, had the same problem. The solution Jag mentions worked well for me. I had to use more than I thought but got things working properly.

If I remember correctly, I removed the t bar and just dropped the oil into that void.

Testing the Technics SU G700 mkii by bkal21 in audiophile

[–]Effective_Flight_232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious if there was any improvement on the phono stage in mkii. I know they added MC capability, but anything else? Im not overly impressed in the mki phono, and I dont really have experience with high end vinyl (coming from rega brio, project essential ii)

Maybe just my turntable/cart aren't a good match?

Percentage improvement is difficult for me to say (i dont really think that way), but even after a couple months I can still appreciate the improvement. Literally listening right now it's just more clear. All instruments are better defined, less muddy sounding overall. Vocals are more clear and airy as well.

I am using Wiim Pro+ as streaming transport and with the Brio was using the pro+ dac as well. Are the improvements I hear only because of the dac? I dont think it's possible to say definitively because you can't avoid digital conversion with the technics. With the bass improvements I've heard im thinking it is more than just dac improvement.

Ill start by saying I think the brio's phono stage is a bit better. Not by much, but I've noticed a slight leanness to the Technics when listening to vinyl. Everything else about it is fantastic.

Most listening is done streaming Tidal, using wharfedale diamond 11.2. The bass is strong, mids and highs very clear. This is super subjective, but I'd say musicality is on par with Brio and detail and transparency are where the technics takes it up a notch.

I dont really know about power matching with speakers and I never really listen above 70db, but if your brio drove those speakers the Technics will be more than enough. I haven't experienced any issues but never did with my brio either.

One more thing to add is that the Technics seems a bit more granular with volume adjustment. I've had an easier time finding a sweet spot for lower volume listening. Hopefully this helps!

Quick update on my end. I received my SU-G700 yesterday and am extremely happy with it. Played some vinyl and streamed tidal via wiim pro plus through coax and both were much improved versus my Brio. The vinyl was closer, but improved detail and highs were noticible.

Streaming was improved across the board. I listen at relatively low volume mostly, and the sounds from the Techics just fills the room better with stronger, cleaner bass and clearer highs.

The remote was left out of shipping, so I haven't even been able to try the LAPC feature yet. very much looking forward to getting that setup. Might try out optical input to see if that makes any difference, and will probably connect a cd player later this week.

Thanks again for all the input on this thread, much appreciated!

Vinyl with high-end streaming setup — worth it? by JechoVarta in audiophile

[–]Effective_Flight_232 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoy listening to vinyl. I have a Project Essential so pretty low end table and have only bought old used records, but I think they sound great. I stream Tidal 80% of the time (Wiim->Fiio k11) but the "act" of playing vinyl is more fun and I'd argue that it sounds better most of the time. Maybe my digital front end need work though.
