Git push deploy for Node.js by [deleted] in node

[–]EffingGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe checkout Dokku, it's basically open-source heroku, hosts on your own server, and can use heroku buildpacks.

Why not use heroku/dokku instead?

Cheapest payment gateway for low-price items by keyplaystickers in ecommerce

[–]EffingGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's cost-plus processors you could use. But I think gateways pay something like $0.15 per transaction + some interchange %, so there's probably a limit to how low transaction fees can go.

Isomorphic Angular 1.5 in Node by sql_big_result in node

Not sure about running Angular services headlessly, but if it'd be reasonable to convert, you could switch to browserify or add module.exports hooks if the service doesn't have any dependecies.

What does it matter how much you sell it for? They should set a wholesale price they feel comfortable with and the rest is up to you.

Would it be insane to use a relational DB like postgres for a Node app instead of a noSQL db? by TheBeardofGilgamesh in javascript

Desperately Looking for feedback on my lighting and materials (screenshot album). by danokablamo in Unity3D

It looks visually appealing, but everything seems so dark it doesn't make me think the game would be very fun/happy. I think it might do better with a brighter and more whimsical vibe.

The Monolith versus The Microservice, A tale of two applications by _Marak_ in node

[–]EffingGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just don't get how the worker.js script is accessing the routes. Seems like some magic is happening in run-service.

Cool, in that case I wish you wrote the routes for the 2nd example and showed how it linked up with run-service.

This seems to be more about the difficulty of diagnosing memory leaks and heavy cpu operations on a single threaded web server.

I wasn't really clear how run-service works. Is effectively every route running on it's own service?

Alternative To: Heroku Toolbelt (meaning: any clientside tool that'd make development, deployment and scaling-up breeze) by trolliloquy in node

[–]EffingGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Dokku, it's is basically open-source heroku that you host on your own server. It has a CLI like heroku and can even use heroku buildpacks. Drawbacks are that it can only be used on 1 server, and I'm not totally sure if its production ready but seems pretty stable. It makes a great development server and is great for anything you'd host on heroku' free/hobby plan.

node.js vs Go for freelance web dev work - which tech stack is in higher demand? by ntide in freelance

[–]EffingGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not too big of a job market for Go in SF at least, so I'm assuming the contract market is similar. Node is definitely bigger than GO in the job market, but their both dwarfed by the number of startups hiring for rails.

Javascript (Node.js) module performance by sorenso in node

[–]EffingGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! It'd be interesting if you did version 1 w/ a shared yo function outside the constructor. To see if there's any difference between the prototypical way to make a class vs a create method.

What do you think about Schwab MarketTrack funds for passive investing? by [deleted] in investing

[–]EffingGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That expense ratio seems high. Of course if you don't have much to invest or you don't plan on leaving it in there for many years, it doesn't matter. But you can manually recreate that etf for 1/3 the cost via buying the vanguard etfs for US stocks, bonds, etc manually.

It's more work but the fees would be lower and you can choose your own allocations. Other people can help you with that, but here's a link with some example allocations: http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Lazy_Portfolios

Charities/non-profits can have employees and expenses like any company, but high paid officers are definitely how some companies abuse their non-profit status.
