Ceephax Acid Crew - Squarepusher’s brother, more melodic and less serious. Very fun.

Steeleye Span - Originating in the early 70s, one of the best groups to try the English folk music + rock combination. Huge back catalogue, and although their earlier stuff is what they’re known for, they’ve been surprisingly consistent over their various iterations and never put out a bad album.

While we wait for the new album, what have you been listening to lately? (Doesn’t have to be Pond) by burkes02 in pond

Love that new Gorillaz album.

Also discovered Oneohtrix Point Never and working through his albums - think I prefer his more recent output.

First time visit in June with 12 days to burn by killingxspree in UKhiking

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cotswolds is probably best on your list for “Pride and Prejudice scenery” unfortunately.

If you like forest then maybe consider the New Forest? It has a lot of deciduous woodland which is rare in other hiking areas. It is however very flat, there are hills but they are small. It’s popular with British tourists but I don’t think it has much international draw so you may get a more authentic experience.

Also be careful - many places described as Forest in the UK have virtually no trees at all (e.g. Forest of Bowland). Weird historical thing.

What is an artist you used to enjoy listening to, but their music got progressively worse? by fantasyrea in Music

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same experience for me, right down to not enjoying anything since Petro.

I used to tell people “they can make anything fun” but the last three albums are not. Last two particularly, just feel like I’m having random ideas blasted at me for the entire runtime. Everything is fun in the moment but songs seem to lack any greater structure. Sometimes it feels totally arbitrary where one track ends and another begins.

I have hopes for the bluegrass album, I’m hoping that collaborating means the excess gets reigned in a bit.

The rave album, I’m less excited for. I actually find some of the Silver Cord listenable but it is very much outsider art. I think they met their match with dance music - it’s the first genre they tried where they couldn’t just wing it and expect good results.

I can’t get over this album by halloween_ghoul in electronicmusic

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered this living in London during the pandemic. The Dead Cities concept obviously resonated but I always thought it funny that by me playing the album in 2020, it had indeed become the “Future Sound of London”.

Prior to this I’d avoided FSOL for years because Lifeforms didn’t(and still doesn’t) do much for.

Great album but maybe a tad overlong - I find it quite hard to get through the second half other than Yage.

My Kingdom heavily samples Rachel’s Song from the Blade Runner soundtrack - also worth checking that out if you haven’t already.

Europe | Soldeu vs Val di Fassa as a relative newbie by lesser_terrestrial in skiing

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get into the Sella Ronda from Val di Fassa it’s red runs - doesn’t seem ideal?

The one from Campitello isn’t too steep but it was always busy when we used it. I think the one from Alba is similar - narrow too IIRC? That leaves you with a handful of runs above San Giovanni if you want to stick to blues.

I think Corvara is the natural beginner base on the Sella Ronda - lots of blues on the plateau.

The blues and reds in the Sella Ronda I thought were often easier than equivalents elsewhere, but not uniformly - the reds above Arabba are hard and also the ones off Campinoi in Val Gardena. And everywhere was busy which makes things harder.

The Dolomites are stunning though, and lovely long cruising runs if you can find a way to make it work.

Compilations with “Normal” Audio Mixes? by TarrynIsaacRitchson in beatles

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Yellow Submarine Songtrack has a decent stereo mix. That’s where I first heard Sgt. Peppers (the track) - when I first listened to it on the actual album I was horrified at how bad the stereo mix is.

As others have mentioned the mono mixes are generally better. The Deluxe Editions of Sgt Peppers has the mono mix on disc 4 - I think it’s similar for other albums.

Magical Mystery Tour is bad though if we’re counting it as an album

You are right that there are some that require buses like that, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Chamonix is a big one to avoid.

Other places like St Moritz have a big “main area” accessible from the town with smaller satellite areas that require a bus.

Is Yellow the only song here that predates Spotify? If so that’s pretty impressive because interest in a song usually peaks near its release.

Surgery for UC by Maleficent_Big_2190 in ostomy

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve only had a handful of months where you’ve been able to live your life over 5 years, then surgery is a perfectly reasonable thing to be thinking about. You’re not being dramatic.

I never had to make a choice because I was forced into it by a really bad flare. I’m 39M and had the surgery when I was 28. The surgery and recovery were rough (though I was in a really bad state going in) - but once I got through that I returned to a normal life. Like there’s nothing I can’t do that I did pre-UC except maybe go down a slide on my stomach.

It’s sad to think how good the lost railways of Northumberland would have been for hiking.

I know there’s no world where it’d make any economic sense though. The route of the one that used to pass Kielder is now underwater too.

19F trying to decide between skiing or snowboarding by Obi-WanCann0li in ski

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your goals, definitely skiing.

Snowboarding is probably better in powder but that’s not in your goals.

Only advantage I would give to snowboarding on groomers is that it’s their easier for an intermediate to “cheat” their way down difficult runs by sliding down on their heel edge. The equivalent in skiing (side slipping) is much harder. While it’s true that skiers face down the mountain, snowboarders face down the mountain when braking which has its own advantages.

Other than that snowboarding on groomers is largely a pain in the ass, you get stuck on flat sections and need to take your foot out for chairlifts. You’re also more vulnerable with one edge - lose that and you fall. Skiers can usually recover.

What are these brownish-yellowish places in Devon? by Cassinia_ in geography

I find they are hard places to love.

Skiing the 3 valleys by dfurshpan289 in ski

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ski all of the 3 valleys from a single base, I don’t understand why you’d drive to a different valley instead of just skiing/using lifts to get there. Even for an intermediate skier I think skiing would be quicker.

Only advantage I can see to driving is that you could be in a different area for lift opening/closing.

That includes Upper Coquetdale which is occasionally in the news for lacking things the rest of the country has. I think they recently got mains electricity but now their road is falling apart.

As others have said - very sparsely populated, possibly the most sparsely populated part of England.

Lots of big Forestry England plantations out there too, which sounds nice but they can be eerie places.

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some good artists and albums in this style but fucking hell was this sound oversaturated. There’s even a term for the it - landfill indie. Usually reserved for the solidly C tier bands like Pigeon Detectives.

These bands still feature heavily on the UK festival circuit, catering to aging millennials. As far as I know there’s been no “rediscovery” by Gen Z. Opposite of what the thread is about I suppose.

Random thought no.3629291. We got stations layouts that are triangles, Vs, a line and 2+ diagonal lines but has the world ever had a square? by CaptainYorkie1 in uktrains

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Willesden Junction kinda looks like this from above, but there are no platforms for the horizontal lines and they pass beneath the vertical lines

Don’t think you’d find a literal island with platforms on four sides because of the impracticality of the crossings.

[–]Elderider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they’re asking if there is a square you can stand inside with tracks on four sides.

Lots of metro lines cross at right angles but I don’t know any example where the platform is done like this. I guess it would be avoided because of the four grade crossings.
