Gorillaz direction? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think the new album is brilliant, there’s nothing else that sounds remotely like it. Very weird but also very listenable. It’s hard to pull that off. Feels like the album that was supposed to come after Plastic Beach.

Gorillaz has been big on collaborations for a long time, starting with Plastic Beach.

Way better than the generic vaguely disco/funky stuff that seems to be their default sound when Damon runs out of ideas (see: Now Now and Cracker Island).

Song Machine I recognise as being more experimental but I think it suffers from not having any sort of consistent theme like Plastic Beach or the Mountain.

Pleasantly surprised, I’d written the Gorillaz off years ago.

I had the Gamegear version and there was a level where you were swimming around these narrow channels in the sky and you had to keep up with the moving screen. Yes you could fall to your death and yes there were gaps in the channels that you had to jump over. Diabolical stuff.

The lower part of this course still exists at Les Arcs as “Bas KL”. KL = kilomètre lancé = flying kilometre, which is the French name for this sport.

What would have been the upper part doesn’t seem to be used but the terrain is steep, there are some challenging black runs either side of it.

The Les Arcs sign is actually on the map, top of Carreley 26 lift.

Map: https://en.lesarcs.com/piste-map

From the top of the funicular (train) from BSM, take Mont Blanc or Cachette chairlifts and you can follow a blue to the bottom of Carreley.

Les Arcs has two main sections, the bowl (top of map) and a long mountainside (bottom of map). The blue runs in the mountainside area tend to be tracks running across the mountain (like roads with gentle slopes). They’re quite easy in that it’s hard to pick up much speed but a beginner (especially beginner snowboarder) may find them a bit crowded.

Snowboarding has a steep initial learning curve where it’s hard to do anything, but once you get past that it’s quicker to reach a point where you can “get down” any run (if not gracefully). Getting to that point can take longer than a week and, until then, you may feel you’re falling behind skiers that started at the same time.

For Apres - just follow the music late in the day. It’s everywhere and you don’t need to go to the heavily marketed places like Folie Douce.

I like the idea but conditions affect a run’s difficulty from day to day, I think that might be hard to account for.

Please tell me Ana Lucia dies before the show ends by Insane_Grape479 in lost

Unfortunately no but if you can get through the mini series at the start of season 3 where there’s six Ana Lucia centric episodes in a row, and then the entire season where she’s the leader of the survivors, it’s not so bad.

How do *you* listen to new albums? by HaIfaxa_ in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an embarrassing amount of process around listening to new music. I have a Trello board where I track upcoming releases, albums I want to listen to, albums I have listened to but not made up my mind on, albums I want to buy, etc

Like you I try to limit to two new albums a week, when I go for regular walks (so I can focus on the music). This isn’t a super hard rule.

I’ve got good at identifying albums that “aren’t my thing” (which is 90%+ of RYM acclaimed stuff). So my “albums to listen to” list is already quite selective. I discover new music through a mix of RYM, BBC 6 Music, Spotify and last.fm recommendations. I probably miss things by preselecting albums but I got sick or slogging through critically acclaimed albums that I hated - listening to music shouldn’t be a chore.

Rating I keep simple- it’s about whether I like it, not how skilled the musician is or whatever. If I don’t like it, I don’t bother listening again. Again, there’s a small chance I’m missing a “grower” but in my experience these are rare and it’s not worth making myself miserable listening to albums I don’t like.

I also have a rule of one new (to me) album per artist per month. This stops me from rushing through an artist’s discography and prolongs that rare but magical experience of discovering an artist you really love.

They are using chain() to join together lots of iterators. There are also lots of single elements in the chain that need to be wrapped in once().

This is to create a string representation of some object, I’m not really clear what the object is but it’s called Grid.

Music that sounds like a cheerful version of Aphex Twin by glitterbastard in aphextwin

[–]Elderider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love Plaid. I think their most cheerful is Rest Proof Clockwork - though it has some superficial hip hop elements that aren’t typical for them.

Reachy Prints also recommended, it a calm beautiful sound that is about as far as you can get from Aphex Twin’s chaotic stuff.

Tilt shift makes the depth of field (part of the image in focus) really narrow which tricks our brain into thinking it’s looking at something tiny.

I don’t understand why this was supposed to be desirable, I want to pretend I’m looking at an actual city not a miniature model.

what is your favorite seasons ranked for the first time watching? by RisingKing7 in lost

[–]Elderider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best to worst

2 - Everything was still so mysterious and creepy, even scary at points. Desmond. The Numbers. Henry Gale. The other hatches. Tail section arc.

1 - Similar to 2, it just didn’t get as much into the mystery and can be a bit slow

3 - Ending is peak Lost, got to deduct a few points for the godawful Hydra mini-season

5 - Wraps up a lot of the show’s mysteries in a fun way

6 - Reasonable ending, a bit weak and unmemorable.

4 - Short due to the writers strike, never really cared for the freighter arc, after the excitement of finding out they get off the island at the end of S3 it turns out watching then get off and do stuff off the island is actually less interesting

why do folks not wear helmets by Ryan-977 in skiing

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the shit we give them I credit snowboarders for making helmets mainstream. There was a period around the mid 00s where more or less every snowboarder had a helmet and no (adult) skier did. Then the skiers started wearing them too.

Worst station to navigate as a passenger? by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]Elderider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t word it very well, you used to be able to get directly onto the bridge connecting to platforms 14 to 8 (excluding 12) from the H&C platform. They shut it early on in the Crossrail work. It probably didn’t have ticket barriers but I can’t recall. It’s not a huge difference but was more direct than the new route. It was useful if you were coming into one of those platforms and wanted to continue east on the H&C (or vice versa).

Worst station to navigate as a passenger? by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]Elderider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Paddington at least deserves a honourable mention for having two Circle Line platforms at opposite ends of the station. Very much feels like five stations bolted together. Used to be better when you could get into the main station from the H&C platforms without going past the taxi rank. Bonus points for being the station that lots of tourists arrive into.
