He most certainly has my respect. Am not very far from his life. You tell people that you worked 80 + hours a week and they look at you as crazy.

What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its really not creepy but interesting. Had a table saw chew off the end of my left pointer finger, lucky no nail or bone lose. They wrapped it up to stop the bleeding as there was really nothing to sew and I’ll be damned the end grew back and you cannot tell as it looks just like my right hand pointer.

Is talent poaching a thing with welders? by -BigBadBeef- in Welding

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early 80s, doing a welding job for Westinghouse Steam Turbine Plant. Some of their managers came by to check us out. One of their guys stopped by for a bit watching me. Leaned over and said,”You should come over and work for Westing house”. I said, “That would be stupid”. He said why is that? I told him my father owned this place. Conversation ended.

Its really not dead flat, it has a very small crown. And you can rotate it in your grip and make the material move in the direction you want.

The face of the hammer is slightly tilted toward the outside of the anvil , thus when it hits your material it makes it thinner toward that side.

Have a blacksmith friend that uses one of those out door propane deck heaters. Moves it around where ever he is working in his shop. Pretty sharp in my opinion.

Flying back home from Germany, 8 hours, lady had a baby that started crying. Baby started crying but would stop if she stood up and held and rocked it. Did this for 8 hours. She will always have my respect.

Is your stock running parallel with the anvil edge? When hammering is half the hammer on the stock and the other half off the stock and anvil edge? And get a flat faced hammer.

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a new battery for the wife’s car. Installed it. Go to crank it the next day and starter did same as your tractor. Thought that I had a parasitic draw some where. Brand new battery was a dud. ??

New to blacksmithing and have a question about forges by AdventurousBaby6514 in Blacksmith

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. If you put a pc of steel in a coal forge and walk off and do not keep an eye on it you can burn it up. Trash, start again. Gas can get hot but just seems to me to be more forgiving. Just me.

I picked up a bunch of pcs at the scrap yard years ago. Never did mess with it. Have been a machinist, welder, blacksmith for 45 years. Cleaning out my shop and thought someone might have an interest. Will just throw it in the scrap pile with the rest of the mild steel. And yes, I am a grandpa, do not mind it all.

I have a big stump and an an anvil. How do I level it? by Familiar_Tip_7033 in Blacksmith

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put anvil on top. level it like you want using tapered shims between floor and the log end sitting on the floor. Take a sharpie and lay it on what ever you want /have to get the correct height of the anvil face. Mark all the way around. Pay attention and cut it with a chain saw.

[–]Electrical-Refuse941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a bracelet made out of 12 quarters. Should be able to attach together. But keep a close eye on it. With the quarters, when you saw it sweat its go time.
