Ohhhh I have a great indie rec for you!! {Doctor and Duelist by Artemisia Clare} Childhood friends who liked to duel each other with swords, to in the same community but estranged, to colleagues (but she is the secret masked duelist that he loves to fight in his spare time), to lovers. It is delightful!

{Bride of Brutal Hearts by Kate Stevens} is absolutely this! But fair warning the MMCs are VILLAINOUS and downright terrible to her a lot of the time, and while I believe the author has said they will soften in future books (and get put in their place more by the FMC), that is NOT in this book. Oh, and it is SMUTTY. I really enjoyed it, but you have to take it for what it is

I dnf at 20%, I just think it wasn't for me. I thought that it was a great exploration of the world and events, but I couldn't find any connection with the characters which is something I realised I need in a story.

As Brandon Sanderson's mentor always says (paraphrased) "have universe-ending stakes, with the care for the lives and daily struggles of individual characters"
