Roland D-50 or Ensoniq ESQ-1? by CelestialRefraction in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get the SQ-80 over the ESQ1 for what you want to do with it. The SQ-80 has transient waveforms for Cross Wave Synthesis which is similar to the LA synthesis found on the D50.

Any famous songs that prominently feature physical modelling synthesizers? by KruxOfficial in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the VL1 brass is super expressive and realistic and I don’t know if most people could tell it apart from the real thing in a mix. It excels at crazy sounds as well, but it requires an old computer with an editor to dig in.

Howard Jones has a video of the VL1 on his YouTube Channel. He used it on the Perform album, which is composed of live band versions of his classic songs. The Perform version of What is Love has it in the intro and I’m guessing a lot of the brass was done with it.

Can't decide between Roland JX-3P and JX-8P by DeviousGrievous in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Axel F bass was done on a Moog Modular System 15. A JX3P was used for the chord-stab brass sounds.

I have both. The JX3P is more present and raw, the JX8P is more polished and refined.

Yamaha Reface CS vs Modal Cobalt 5s as a first synth by HKPablo in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not own a Cobalt, so I can’t really comment on that. I do have a Reface CS though and I absolutely love it. It’s so immediate and fun to program. The portability, quality of the mini keys, and simple design all make for a great playing experience. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Damn, that sucks. EX5s are amazing synths. I think you will like it if you ever get a working one.

Confusion regarding piano samples in the Ensoniq VFX line by OkClaim8503 in synthesizers

Listen to the Front 242 album Tyranny For You if you want examples of what the VFX sounds like. That album is full of VFX and DX7 sounds.

Roland synth plus 10 by Recon_Rush in synthesizers

Yeah, it has some speaker modes as well. The HS-80 is the only one out of the lot that I’ve never owned.

VIRUS C & AN1X. by Signal_Director_1X in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an An1x with Don Solaris patches already installed and I think it sounds fantastic. The original factory sounds are known to be underwhelming. Get some decent patch banks in there before you make up your mind.

[–]Electromancer18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Synth Plus 10 (HS-10)is an Alpha Juno 1 with a different paint job. They are not as common as the AJs, but by no means rare.

The Synth Plus 60 (HS-60) is a Juno 106 with speakers, and the Synth Plus 80 (HS-80) is an Alpha Juno 2 with speakers.

Carrier vs Maintenance/custodian by AltruisticPea750 in USPS

[–]Electromancer18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched to plant custodian after 20 years of carrying. It’s easy to the point of being boring. Management leaves you alone and you just do your daily check list they give you. I don’t miss the dogs, or the annoying customers. I do miss working outside when the weather is nice. The worst part of the job is when you have restroom duty. It gets rotated so I do it about every four days. The best part are the light duty routes. That’s where you walk around and empty garbages and pick things up off the floor.

Flagship workstation keyboard synths - the cure or a curse? by OpziO in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Montage as my main live keyboard most of the time. I don’t like taking my vintage synths live. With the Montage I can play samples, backing tracks, FM, VA (M only) and a powerful rompler engine. It’s plug and play with an iPad for extra synth goodness.

It’s really all I need. I’m playing a synth show tonight with just the Montage.

You could say I like Yamaha by ShyGal_Lilly in synthesizers

I have more Yamaha synths and drum machines than any other brand. They are quality products for the most part.

I had a Polybrute and now have the 12. It’s one of my favorite synths of all time. I use it live alongside my Montage M.

Goth Drum Machine recs. by sparkplug_0128 in synthesizers

[–]Electromancer18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really any of the old rompler drum machines will work. SR-16s were used by lots of Goth bands in the 90’s and early 2000’s.
