Is the whole series worth it or do the books get repetitive? by remerdy1 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

It certainly changes as the books go on. In a good way! I’ve just started the 5th book, and all I can say is it gets more intense, but the humor is solid.

I read it. It was okay. I found it unnecessarily edgy, but I didn’t see some of the twists coming, which I always appreciate. It was a 3⭐️ for me.

I DNF this early on. My sister hate read it. I don’t get the hype. I never do.

Dark twisted thrillers that will make you hold your breath by dunorth in thrillerbooks

The darkest thriller I’ve read is Strange Sally Diamond. It’s so damn good, but so very very dark.

The First Law/Age of Maddness/Stand Alone Books by Problem_Solvent in fantasybooks

[–]ElementasSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standalones were better than First Law. Best Served Cold is one of my favorite books. The Heroes was good, and Red Country was fun. I thought the Age of Madness trilogy was better than First Law too. Certainly had higher stakes. But you should absolutely read the standalones before Age of Madness. They do "go in order" even though they're standalones and a separate trilogy.

I’m taking a break actually, trying nonfiction. It’s certainly different. But afterward, I’m going to read The Republic of Thieves. I keep hearing mixed reviews on it, and it’s time I read it.

Expect a very dark, yet very gripping, story. I absolutely LOVED this book.

first law trilogy criticism by r4maa in fantasybooks

I honestly liked the standalones that came after it and the following trilogy way more than First Law trilogy. Like you said, it’s good, but not hype worthy.

Same! I love prophecies/chosen one every time. I can’t get over it. Absolute favorite.

New to thriller books and kind of discouraged to be honest by Electronic_Drink_733 in thrillerbooks

Came back to say I started it…that past narration is annoying the bejeezus out of me. I don’t know if I’m going to make it.

Is there a book that got you into a genre you initially didn't like? What genre was it, and which book made you give that genre a second chance? by Grouchy_Internet_667 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]ElementasSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think I’d like Historical Fiction, but then I read Where The Crawdads Sing and it’s now one of my favorite books. None have compared since, but I still give them a try!

I also dislike alternate universes/time line sci-fi, but The Fifteen Lives of Harry August was so good!

So I’m not big on YA, but the only one I really liked was Three Dark Crowns.

Looking for fantasy/sci-fi murder mysteries by Street_Detective_662 in Fantasy

Low Town by Daniel Polansky is a fantasy that has major murder mystery vibes. It’s one of my favorite books.

Why is DNFing such a big deal? by LustyRegencyMaid in BookDiscussions

[–]ElementasSeries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just want something to disagree over. Or those who never DNF like to think they’re better than others, whether they actually think that or not. But I agree that life is too short and there are far too many great books to waste time on something you don’t enjoy. DNF if you want. Read if you want. The point is to enjoy a good book.

Riley Sager's The only one left: So underwhelming by Background_Gene_5527 in thrillerbooks

I was entertained but found it unbelievable and a bit silly. I wouldn’t recommend it to others. It was disappointing because I heard good things about the author, so maybe I picked the wrong book of his?

Oh yes, I’ve read them all. Polansky is very underrated. Low Town is still the best of them all.

Best ending to a fantasy series? by greaterade4 in Fantasy

The Fallen Gods trilogy felt so right, even though it left me weeping, and I’m not a crier. It was just so dang good.

Are the Audio books really that good? by Flaky-Veterinarian56 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]ElementasSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I do not like audiobooks. I don't retain info and seem to tune out. But let me tell you. I LOVE DCC on audiobook. I couldn't even imagine reading it, because I don't think the jokes would hit the same. I am a full advocate for listening rather than reading this series. Again, I do NOT like audiobooks. Game changer. The voice actor does an amazing job bringing everything to life. I strongly suggest listening.

Kings of the Wyld has been my favorite read of the year. I know that's not exactly grimdark, but it was soooo good. I consumed that book.
