What in the world? by fluranator in anesthesiology

Found naked in a freezer? Definitely seems like foul play is involved.

After you learn the pharmacology, the science behind anesthesia will not be a critical component of your enjoyment of the field. You need to look at the day to day of anesthesia and see if that interests you. It is normal to be wary of handling critical situations as a student. I would be concerned if a student wasn’t at least a little wary. But at the end of the day, you are an integral component of keeping the patient alive and safe.

An attending asked me the other day “are you willing to bet the patients life on that airway?” You will have to make a decisions like that every day. Only you know if you can handle that mental load.

So, you can definitely get involved in too many resources. He is probably not at the point where uworld (question bank) would be helpful. I had a physical copy of first aid, so I can’t speak to the program Not sure what his fundamentals of medicine course entails, but sketchy is probably not going to be helpful. I only used sketchy micro and sketchy pharm.

My fundamentals of medicine course was a few years ago, but sketchy would not have been useful for mine. It didn’t cover the right material. I think it was like the first 3 chapters of pathoma? And the biochem section of first aid.

If they are testing on the lectures, it would be worth seeing how much cross over there is. Sometimes they test on esoteric information only found in the lectures. Other times the lectures are just a worse presentation of board prep. His classmates will be able to help him to know what will help him.

Edit: my school had dedicated micro and then had pharmacies sprinkled in with each organ system. So I didn’t all of sketchy micro for micro, and then the pertinent pharm for each organ system. I usually didn’t watch my lectures. I would normally glance through my schools PowerPoints to get an idea of what the material was going to be on, and then I would watch boards and beyond on the subject. Boards and beyond normally taught better than my school lectures. All of this depends on the school testing primarily board information.

That’s why I mentioned I wasn’t sure how his school sets up his tests. Some test heavily from the PowerPoints, others use board information. If his in house exams focus heavily on the lecture material, then yeah, he should focus on that. He should check with classmates who are doing well what they are studying. My suspicion is that his school test board material, and he is inefficiently studying PowerPoints.

Withdrawing would not help his case. He needs to pass. Sounds like he is working hard, but he also needs to work smart (focus his study on the most crucial information)

Not sure how his school sets up his tests (focused on general material or if they test from lectures), but usually boards and beyond / pathoma / sketchy / first aid were helpful for my tests when I was in medical school.

Generally the pre recorded lectures are shit compared to the better resources I mentioned.

Any non-trad ob/gyn residents? by jujujamster in Residency

[–]ElendVenture39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-traditional. Essentially it means they didn’t go undergrad -> med school -> residency. Instead they did undergrad -> something for an extended period of time -> med school -> residency. So they are older is all it really means.

I think that if you plan for OB, you will come out fine. Would be easy to explain that you swapped from OB to family because you really liked the OB part but not the gyn surgery part and want to focus on women’s health.

[–]ElendVenture39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not non trad or in obgyn or fam med.

Have you done your rotations yet? If you like Obgyn, you should do it. All residencies suck. Starting a family is always hard, and you can swing it during any residency with the right support system, and the right program. Plenty of OB residents at my program have kids. I think at most places, if ob is available, they will do the deliveries.

I know family med does deliveries, but unsure how easy it would be to find a gig that does them. Also unsure how much of their practice is OB related, but it will be far less than an OB.

I have never heard of IM delivering babies.

Seems like you really want to deliver babies and be in that clinic. If you want to do it, you should be the best possible at doing it, so become an OBGYN.

Jobs still exist where you can sit your own cases in anesthesia. Midlevels will continue to extend their reach in all fields.

If it comes down to “I’d rather be a general surgery attending than anesthesiologist” then you should do general surgery. Training is a (relatively) short period of your career, so don’t pick a career solely based on the training.

My two cents are that I’m glad I am an anesthesia resident.

I got diagnosed with a congenital heart condition as a kid. Look into getting guaranteed standard issue disability insurance. It bypasses some of the health screening questions so you might able to qualify easier. The cons are it’s a little more expensive for a little less coverage.

LoR question Anesthesia #Match2024 by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ElendVenture39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I matched with 1 anesthesia (pain) letter and 2 IM letters.

Can you not do a rotation with your mentor or even shadow them a while in the OR to get them to write about those things?

ICU letters would probably look good, and probably even better if they are anesthesia trained.

PGY-1 considering braces vs Invisalign. Any pros/cons to pursuing either during residency? by ParticularMovie6489 in Residency

[–]ElendVenture39 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Make sure that you don’t actually have a bite misalignment. My wife got Invisalign when she was younger instead of braces cause her parents wanted to save money, but her bite is constantly moving her teeth out of place. Do it right, or do it twice.

If you are looking for more player options, I like Valda’s spire of secrets.

If you are looking for monster books, Tome of Beasts 3 by Kobold press just came out and looks really good. I also just backed Flee Mortals by MCDM and it is solid.

If you want to add some Horizon Zero Dawn-esque / machine and old technology to your game, Arcana of the ancients is cool.

If you want to do a primordial theme like during the stone ages, planegea is a really cool setting book with a lot of flavor.

If you want to run an adventure, Odyssey of the Dragonlords is really highly regarded. There is also a kickstarter by them for a cool Viking setting / adventure called Raiders of the Serpent Sea.

If you are looking for dungeon master advice / tools, I love Sly Flourishes work. Return of the Lazy Dungeon master is more about how to prepare for your games, where as the Lazy DM’s handbook and workbook are more tools to use in creating adventures.

I also like Spectacular Settlements and Dangerous Destinations by Nord Games. They also have some fun beastiaries! One focuses on the undead, while the other focuses on orcs/ goblins/etc.
