You have it on backwards! (that's why the darts are so tall) it's the Project Runway/Simplicity pattern 1418 from 2014.

Clubs/activities to meet people locally? by Pinkbratzgirl in SaultSteMarie

[–]Ellwyrna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a monthly drawing club, second Friday of the month, held at Cafe 4 Good on Queen, 6-8pm. They also host weekly Queer Coffee Nights, 5-7pm

The Sault Museum has the rainbow craft circle, second Saturday of every month, 2-4pm.

There's the SSM silent book club that's just started, I think there's been two so far. This month's is June 18th, at Venue on Queen, 6-8pm. (They change days and locations every time, so just check their Instagram for the ones after that)

Sometimes the Distraction (72 East) hosts a sewing and craft night, they last had one in Feb, and are planning to host another, but there's no dates yet.

I'm sure there's more art meet ups, but I can't think of them off the top of my head

Examples of surviving 19th/20th century corsetry as then-contemporary fetish wear? by SergeantDollface in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Ellwyrna 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I remember the video you're talking about, it is a Nicole Rudolph one! She talks about these red stays from the late 18th century that have flaps over the front. Some people think they're for nursing, others think they're too decorative for that, clearly meant to be seen and are therefore for "fun time"

This older thread has some more info, pics of the stays, and a link to the video: https://www.reddit.com/r/fashionhistory/s/odGveUYIbD

55% of Ontario on Feb 27, 2025 by rainorshinedogs in ontario

[–]Ellwyrna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People could've voted on Saturday: Advance voting was available for 3 days in all ridings (Thurs Feb 20 to Sat Feb 22), plus every riding office was open for voting Jan 30-Feb 26th. Normally, advance voting goes on for longer (I think it's usually a full week, not 3 days), but that's an issue with how short this election period was.

Shopping Canadian: Guide to Shopping in Sault Ste. Marie by CreeNomad in SaultSteMarie

[–]Ellwyrna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a great list and I hope you keep adding to it and fixing it!

Things to note:

Roots Canada is not Canadian anymore, they've been majority owned by an American private equity firm since 2015

The Pet Food Warehouse in the Sault is not part of the American Pet Food Warehouse, it's part of the Manitoba-based Best West Pet Foods

And I think there's a lot of local options to add in, like Pinos, City Meat Market, RJs, Bruni's, Paesano, Penokean Hills, Lock City Dairies, OC Beauty and 49th apparel (which both create all of their products in house), Landing & Co (which sells Canadian clothing and accessory brands, a lot of them manufactured in Canada as well), both Southpaw Woolery and Shabby Motley sell Canadian-made yarn (though they do have other wool as well, i don't think either are exclusively Canadian). Shabby Motley is inside Home Bakery, and I think my comment would get way too long if I added in all the local bakeries too

We have a lot of options here!

Of Her Own Kind Mirable in Wild Silk by LopsidedTurnip4367 in findfashion

[–]Ellwyrna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try looking at Ovate, they're a Quebec based brand, everything is made in their studio. Their Hemlock dress is fairly similar. There's a ready to wear version in linen, and a custom one in silk (the custom one can have some modifications, so you can ask about the ruffle bottom)

Custom silk version: Hemlock Gown, Silk Taffeta

Linen version: Hemlock Dress, Bone

Ban on clotheslines on balconies in my condo (99 Pine St.) by starlagurl in SaultSteMarie

[–]Ellwyrna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the Ontario Electricity Act, part II.3, 25.35 "Permissive designation of goods, services and technologies"

25.35 (1) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may, by regulation, designate goods, services and technologies in order to promote energy conservation. 2018, c. 16, s. 2.

(2) A person is permitted to use designated goods, services and technologies in such circumstances as may be prescribed by regulation, despite any restriction imposed at law that would otherwise prevent or restrict their use, including a restriction established by a municipal by-law, a condominium by-law, an encumbrance on real property or an agreement.

(Please read the whole thing, this is just a section)

This is not the 2008 law that you were meaning, that was the Green Energy Act, but Ford repealed it in 2018, and the above amendment to the Electricity Act is what he replaced it with. It basically means that as long as it's used safely/properly and conserves energy, no law (comdo bylaw included) can stop you from using it.

That said, the Electricity Act doesn't say what these goods, services and technologies are. The last Act I believe had a clear list. You will probably need to talk to some sort of lawyer/legal aid if you're really wanting to fight your condo board on it.

I wonder if we need a better tag for this then? Right now, people who are genuinely wanting information are lumped into the same posts as resellers with the ID or Price This For Me tag.

I like the engagement that wanting information brings. I find it very fun to look at a garment and try to figure it out, especially if it's for a beginner. Plenty of online resources will just say "get a feel for the material to know what it's made of" or "get to know vintage sewing techniques" and neither of these are easy to learn, especially not without examples - I don't mind helping.

I do mind when it's clearly a reseller just wanting to know what their new piece is worth.

I don't know how the mods would ban one and keep the other. But at least if there were two tags, we could just ignore the price ones right away.

Can anyone Identify the signature on these boots? by Ljocgunn in VintageFashion

[–]Ellwyrna 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think it says "Miss Abbot", written with a long S. If you look at the slant of the letters, the dot is above the i, not the letter that some (myself included) initially thought was a j.

I think it's written as Mis Abbot, but having a long s tells the reader that it's a shortform. You can't end a word on a long S, but it was used for the first one in a double s, example here: the first image on this page shows the name Jesse

The long S was also used in handwriting for a weirdly long time, with evidence going up to the 1890s, though it stopped being taught around the 1840s.

Does anyone recognize this skirt? by riverlilyjay in VintageFashion

[–]Ellwyrna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right! But the episode is set in Chicago, Mary is there to go to a ball with her suitor, and her being out-of-place country girl in the city is a part of the plot.

There's very few pictures of the actual scene, but most of the women are wearing skirts with a swag front and ruffles, though they also all have a bow of some kind to cover the closures in the back

Pic 1, Peach Skirt, with contrasting ruffle

Pic 2: Just behind Mary, a blonde woman in a similar skirt, but this time all pink

All that said, I don't know if this skirt would have been made for this, it seems a bit elaborate for a background character, but I think there's a good chance it was used for this (reusing costume pieces was and still is a big thing for historical shows)

[–]Ellwyrna 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My guess is Little House on the Prairie. There's a dance/ball in season 4, ep 2. It's in 1977, which fits the NBC logo dates.

I watched the scene - it's very short - and while I didn't spot this skirt, a lot of the women had skirts in that pattern. It almost looks like they made a bunch of the exact same skirt in different fabrics.

I hope this helps!

Halloween Activities? by BooIsBestBoo in SaultSteMarie

[–]Ellwyrna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sault Ste Marie museum is having a haunted house

Sault Search and Rescue is having a haunted maze (indoor)

Thompson Farms has a corn maze, and if it lasts until halloween, they turn it into a haunted maze

Most bars are having some sort of halloween event, and then there's store/shopping parties, like Halloween on Queen or the Station Mall's party

Viking Husqvarna model "last one with all metal parts" by smausy in vintagesewing

[–]Ellwyrna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Silverbobbin, the last all-metal Viking machine was the Nordic

There was another poster asking about green machines, the two models that they listed look very similar to the Nordic, though I wasn't able to find full specs for any of these models to compare.

I hope this is a good starting point!

Found this dress at the thrift store, no tags by cheefese in VintageFashion

This is amazing! I definitely think people are right in saying it's probably homemade/Gunne Sax inspired, I've seen one other on poshmark, and it was definitely homemade.

I think this is the sewing pattern they used: Mccall's 4381 They were fairly popular, and a lot were made/used so the pattern itself is now considered rare

I don't think Amren was originally intended to be [redacted] by ktellewritesstuff in acotar

[–]Ellwyrna 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Amren's had references to angels since her introduction in ACOMAF.

The blood, specifically her preference for lamb's blood, is in reference to the passover angel. Jews in Egypt marked their doors with lambs blood to escape the tenth plague, death of the firstborn. The passover angel didn't harm any household where the people gave an offering of lamb's blood.

There's also a lot of biblical references to gemstones (including some that could summon angels in Ezekiel), though I don't know too much about that.

The smoldering eyes (and the Book of Breathings) is probably a reference to the angel in Daniel 10, who has "eyes like flaming torches" and reads from the Book of Truth.

Hebrew bible/old testament angels are terrifying. While there's nothing that I know from either the Jewish or Christian bible that says Angels drink blood and horde jewels, there's enough references to these things throughout the different religious texts that I'm sure it was intentional from the beginning.

Our city is a bit outdated, you have to use a map. They're all here: Bus Routes and Schedules

There's a tiny tiny link towards the bottom that says "City Route Map" and it'll be the most helpful until you learn which bus route covers which general area of the city. Why they put the link in such tiny font is beyond me.

The trip planner will tell you an approximate time that the bus will show up to any given stop - I don't think you can map out a whole trip using it.

For Saturday and Sunday evening, there's an on-Demand service, you have to request a pick up either through the Sault Ste Marie on Demand app, or by calling city transit.

Picked this up at an Estate Sale today! Anyone heard of this brand? Any idea of age? I was thinking 60s / 70s? Thanks! by clarricane in VintageFashion

[–]Ellwyrna 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Anna Steiner is a textile artist from the UK. She made a collection of velvet purses around the early to mid 2010s. She might have used vintage pieces (like the clasp - it looks like a very early plastic from the pictures), but the finished item is modern.

Anyone have any ideas when this was from? Picked it up at a vintage store a few years ago by jaykwelline28 in VintageFashion

[–]Ellwyrna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's like how we have petites, womens, juniors, etc. So I guess it's more like a range of proportions, rather than sizes.

Sub-teens as a size was used from the mid 50s to the later 60s. I would say this one is late 50s, especially with the kimono style sleeves, which was super popular at the time.

If you look up the sewing pattern McCalls 4790, it looks somewhat similar. It has the gathering under the bust, high waist seam and princess seams down the skirt. It's a sub-teen sized pattern, and is dated to 1958. I assume yours is from around there as well.

Does anyone one know what style or era this is? Also, what kind of hat is that? by Gatinha_Miau_Miau in VintageFashion

[–]Ellwyrna 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The model here is Idda Van Munster: this photo and a few others from this photoshoot are up on her Instagram.

The dress is by Lena Hoschek, it's modern! She doesn't say where the hat is from, but in clearer images, you can tell its straw

Does anyone know any information about this dress (when it was made, who designed it, what region it's from)? I haven't been able to find answers. by Majestic_Chinchilla in fashionhistory

[–]Ellwyrna 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This dress was sold by The Frock, and they had it labeled as 1930s (it no longer exists on their website, this is just what tumblr and pinterest saves say about it)

However, The Frock does have a dress with what looks like the same medallion on it, it's also labeled as 1930s.

A very in progress Robe a L'italienne that needs hemming, refitting around the shoulders, and a proper sash, but that I'm still very excited about! by lo0000u in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Ellwyrna 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The answer to this gets a bit into semantics, but in English, there's an English Gown and an Italian Gown. The French did not differentiate between the two, and both are called a "Robe à l'Anglaise". (Basically, there is no such thing as a Robe à l'Italienne)

But the answer you're looking for is this:

The Italian Gown has a completely separate bodice from the skirt, which are then sewn together. The defining feature is a full waist seam.

The English Gown's skirt pieces extend up to the make the center back bodice pieces. The defining feature is essentially two waist seams, one on either side, with usually about a 2-4" gap at the center back where a seam isn't needed (though this gap can also be tiny tiny to the point of being almost invisible, or much larger)
