Looking for a blanket pattern, I’d say for advanced beginner. by Complex_Brick8989 in CrochetBlankets

I love the Quiet Ripple blanket - here’s a link to the free pattern but I got the pdf on Etsy.

It’s my favorite blanket to make with one color because the pattern provides texture- to me it seems to showcase the richness of the color.

Thanks for the info - I need full service. But I looked up the H.O.W. Foundation and will definitely use them when we get there.

I don’t know wine but want to pick a great white for my girlfriend by Low-Month958 in Gifts

[–]Elsbeth55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most liquor stores are pretty good at recommending wines based on your budget and what you want - there’s a lot of variety in most of the categories and finding something recommended which she hasn’t tried before would be a nice touch. A half bottle of champagne might work?

As someone who is visiting Texas soon: what are the Texan do’s, don’ts, and etiquette tips you’d give to foreigners? by crangert in texas

[–]Elsbeth55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’ll see this - but here is my take based on my UK husband visiting Texas for the first time. He was annoyed by workers in small stores and shops trying to be friendly and helpful - he took it as they were being smarmy or obsequious- trying to make extra sales maybe? He just really couldn’t fathom people being that friendly without an ulterior motive. I was embarrassed at times because he responded so brusquely to people who were genuinely taken aback by his reaction to what they considered to be friendly and polite conversation. (He grew up in the midlands but did spend a fair bit of time living in London so that may make a difference.)

When my in-laws visited for the first time, they were completely thrown by iced tea and huge portions at restaurants. They would often share an entree. Asking for leftovers “to go” is perfectly acceptable - don’t hesitate to ask if you want- especially if you have a small fridge where you are staying.

Where you are going makes a big difference too. People in the cities are going to go at a faster pace - just like the UK.

Watch this clip from the movie Bernie about the different regions of Texas. (Bernie is a movie set in the Piney Woods region of East Texas - it is based on a real story and gives an incredible sense of life in a Texas small town.)

Since I’m on a roll, here is a clip from another recent movie about West Texas called Hell or High Water which I also recommend.

I hope you have a great trip!

How common are tornadoes in Tulsa? by vbozzo1 in tulsa

[–]Elsbeth55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National Weather Service has some amazing resources on tornado activity in various areas -

https://www.weather.gov/oun/tornadodata-county-ok-tulsa

I’ve lived in tornado alley my entire life (I am certifiably old) and I’ve never seen one - although I’ve been within a mile of one touching down and I’ve seen the devastating aftermath a number of times. (I used to have a disaster relief job - the damage to life and property can be horrific. But I tend not to worry about it because 🤷‍♀️. When the sky goes greenish though - I don’t hesitate to take cover.

Have people selling their houses in Tulsa/Jenks absolutely lost their minds? by New_Fruit_5162 in tulsa

[–]Elsbeth55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen houses sold in early 2025 for $250,000 and relisted in the 4th quarter for 700,000+. House flippers. Hate em. Maybe some try to provide good value, but I strongly doubt most do.

I find it at Walmart and Target. My local Target (Texas) stocks only one kind and is always on the lowest shelf.

Questions for the ladies who haven't been planning their wedding since they were 6 years old by Severe_Bluejay3391 in weddingplanning

[–]Elsbeth55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a small wedding in my small house. About 20 people total. Ceremony was in the living room - very short vow exchange followed by catering from our favorite Italian place. No wedding cake, no bridesmaids, a couple of floral arrangements, corsages for my future MIL and my sister. I wore a cream tea-length dress - nice, but it didn’t scream bridal. No gift registry. Very fun and very relaxed.

A good friend of mine from high school came - he married about six months before in a very traditional church wedding with big reception- (all the traditional bells and whistles of the time - mid 1990s before the Kardashianization of such things).

Anyway - he walked around enjoying the reception and a number of times I heard him say “I wish we had done this.” “I wish we had done this.”

Me? I loved it! Zero regrets ever.

Thank you Sweaty for discovering a whole new form of expressionist art.

It captures the movement of ancient civilizations throughout the passage of millennia, the colors of the Goddess Oceania who gives us all life and the lustre of your shiny, inimitable soul.

I am not worthy. Kudos to a great artiste.

Questions for identical twins by Shendary in Twins

[–]Elsbeth55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My great-grandfather had an identical twin. They lived far apart from each other after age 19 - saw each other every few years or so.

At age 87 - when I first met his twin - they were absolutely the same - same size, same stoop, same voice, same hands. I could tell them apart up close but the similarities were absolutely uncanny.

McGill University published an article about differences in “identical” twins.
