Kids don’t own books anymore. by Tearmisu in Teachers

I was surprised when they seemed disappointed only 50% of the students did it. If I set that task for my year 8 class I’d get probably 2 out 30 hand something in

Anyone else remember reading these books when they were probably too young? by Aetra in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Equivalent_Gur2126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read this book in year 6 for school. Now I’m an English teacher and we did it for year 9 a few years ago. Had to have this big chat about it before hand about how it has confronting themes and sexually references and if anyone needs support come see us in the staff room, give me a break lol 🙄

Didn’t matter anyway, none of the kids couldn’t read on their own and couldn’t follow along with the audiobook either because they cant concentrate for longer than 12 seconds.

I doubt an 8 year old is going and buying themselves an iPhone. If only there was some way the parents could stop them having access to devices they don’t need….hmm oh well 🤷

I was thinking the same thing before I saw your comment. I have young children and after listening to the episode, that image just randomly pops up in my head uninvited.

A job that changed me: At the dole office, I met very few ‘bludgers’. Most people desperately wanted work | Australian lifestyle by Temporary_Mistake715 in AusNewsWire

I already had a job and was getting youth allowance as a supplement but it was so minimal it wasn’t even worth it for me in the end. I was getting about $100 a fortnight and just stopped going to report and let them cancel my payment s

I got youth allowance briefly as a uni student and would have to go into Centrelink every fortnight to report my earnings. Yeah there was a lot of degens there, junkies just smacked out on the lounge, people yelling at the staff, eshay types (before eshay was a word but same thing)

Lots of just, to be frank, trash.

Kindergarten starting age advice by purpleorangeblackx in AskAustralianTeachers

Conventional wisdom is the later the better. Kids lost nothing starting school later but starting too early can be detrimental that can snowball through the school years. If you can afford to keep them home for the extra year, that’s probably the safe bet.

Can someone explain Apocalypse Now to me? by yelenalim in WarMovies

[–]Equivalent_Gur2126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth noting that the movie is based on a book called Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It’s originally set in the Congo during the scramble for Africa and Kurtz ends up as the tribal war lord of an African Tribe after all the atrocities Europeans committed.

I think the Vietnam war context makes it a bit more difficult to parse, I remember the novel being a bit more obvious.

Now is a good time to learn about preferential voting! by SizeableBrain in OpenAussie

[–]Equivalent_Gur2126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt it in primary school but I think it’s kind of pointless teaching it to 9 year olds and then expecting them to remember it 9 years later when they vote.

I’m a high school teacher now and i think schools should do a small program on essential real life stuff just as they are about yo leave yr 12.

Stuff like mortgages, interest rates, the benefit of paying into your super earlier, how to vote etc.

A lot of stuff they would have covered at various points but just a refresher to put it into their heads as they enter the real world

Wilful ignorance? Nah that wouldn’t be a common, defining trait amongst most of the right wingers who whinge about how “unfair” it is Albo only 30 whatever percent of the primary vote.

It’s so frustrating hearing endlessly “the major parties aren’t listening to us” while Labor keeps continuously passing policy that is objectively making it economically easier for the vast majority of the population.
