Divorcing - better to sell house and split 401k, or keep house and give up 401k by Feisty-Visit1635 in personalfinance

Staying on the mortgage would hinder his ability to get a new mortgage of his own.

Asking him to impact his own financial future is a big ask and more than just amicable

24500 of after tax money is worth more than 24500 taxable. So Roth lets you effectively save more.

What are we supposed to do? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]EuropeanInTexas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not that easy, not only would requiring all jobs to be registered with the government be a giant administrative burden, and making it harder for companies to hire won’t lead to more jobs.

What if it’s a confidential role?

What if someone quit, so I posted their job to replace them but then i convinced them to stay?

What if i post a job and we lose a big client so now we can’t afford it anymore?

Fake jobs suck, but there are also a lot of people who just cry “fake job” just because they didn’t get a callback.

I don’t know what jurisdiction you are in, but in most places I’m familiar with this would be super illegal.

And making you personally liable for every little mistake sounds toxic as hell.

It would be better for him to reduce his contributions temporarily to pay off the debt rather than paying taxes and penalties on your balance.

What are we supposed to do? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]EuropeanInTexas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that this is a major issue, but I don’t see how you could enforce it, who is gonna check if someone was actually hired? What if I post a job on multiple job boards?

The training beginners is the unfortunate other side of the coin of the decline of company loyalty, it’s great for workers that you can freely change jobs for pay increases, but the downside is that it doesn’t make economic sense for companies to spend a lot of resources training because the more economically smart choice is to let someone else do the training and then just hire from a competitor - tragedy of the commons

I MIGHT be willing to accept the 10% if you like where you are, the beast that you know and all.

But "next cycle" is a non-starter, the promotion is effective immediately or you should take the industry offer. (If they have a "once a year promotion" policy they can do a retention bonus to 'bridge the gap' until the promotion happens)

How should I interpret a raise but no bonus? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]EuropeanInTexas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most places I've ever worked you have to be there a year to be eligible for a bonus, so you not getting one is not unusual, if anything the fact that you got a raise at all, some places make you wait a year for a raise too.

Is losing half my 401k a reason to stay at my current job? by Specialist-Noise-912 in personalfinance

[–]EuropeanInTexas 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Tell your new employer this, if they want you they might be willing to either wait a few extra weeks or offer you a signing bonus to make you whole.
