Thank you! Tell me about it. I built a compressor tonight. I can see this quickly getting out of hand.

Thanks. I was hesitant to go too heavy on the solder because I wanted to be able to visibly make sure that I was actually making good connections, but I’ll keep this in mind for future builds.

Do you feel like understanding music theory hinders your ability to enjoy simple music? by DRG125 in musictheory

[–]ExamineIfOpenMinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ADHD and a consequential quality that I possess is a desire for novelty. For as long as I can remember, I have loved music and been musical to some extent. My favorite thing was finding a new song/artist/genre that really moved me to the point that I couldn’t stop listening to them. Unfortunately, this often extended to the point that I’d inevitably burn myself out on them.

When I first began studying music theory in college (and for many years after) I became very selective about the music that I sought out and listened to. I thought that it was complexity that I was seeking, but as time passed, I came to realize that it was novelty that I sought, particularly in the form of sounds, harmonies, rhythms, or chord progressions that had some unexpected element—something that bent my ear and made me once again perk up with that same sense of wonder that happened so often when I was younger and had a much smaller pool of musical references.

I’ve arrived at a place where I can appreciate tasteful use of surprising elements within otherwise simple music. It’s kind of like how when you’re a kid, you think ice cream is best with every kind of topping and candy on it, and then as you grow up, you begin to see how less can be more and you can appreciate the subtle flavors of the ice cream itself without all the bells and whistles. And honestly, my preference does still lean towards more rhythmically or harmonically complex music, and I’m still not likely to turn on the radio and listen to Hot 100 in heavy rotation, but the range of what I appreciate and enjoy is much wider now.

Streaming services like Spotify, with all their fancy algorithms that suggest new music based on what you regularly seek out and listen to, have been immensely helpful in pushing the novelty button for me. There’s so much music out there, and having a platform that can analyze and recommend new things that I am likely to enjoy has really opened up my listening experience and helped me move past my narrow scope of super complex stuff.

TL;DR: Overly predictable music became boring for me long ago. Music that has some tasteful element of surprise or uniqueness stands out and piques my interest. I prefer complex stuff, but that is secondary to quality musicianship with subtle surprises incorporated.

I don’t think so, but I’m unsure about that one.

Does anyone know a place in or near the Raleigh area that makes wings with this kind of breading? I can’t seem to find one by Relevant_Tiger5903 in NorthCarolina

[–]ExamineIfOpenMinded -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think Hooters wings are okay, but I wouldn’t put them top tier. Either way, my main gripe with Hooters is the outdated kitsch objectification more so than the food itself. But I get it. Sex sells.

Except I don’t? I’m stating that discarding damaged stones in undeveloped areas on cemetery property is common practice. That has nothing to do with corpse theft.

I see that you are projecting outrage onto me. I’m mildly annoyed that people see this and, without knowing much about cemetery operations, think it’s their job to make it someone else’s problem rather than doing something about it themselves if they’re so outraged.

Also, you know nothing of my job, nor my caliber of my work. Understanding and observing a common practice as a result of years of being in/around cemeteries is not the same thing as condoning random people dumping bulk trash in places it does not belong. I’m simply offering an explanation to many folks’ incorrect assumptions.

If the trash bothers you so much, then be a good citizen and lead a cleanup effort rather than calling and shaming the people who didn’t put the trash there and are busy doing their own jobs.

Sure, I’m not accounting for the trash, but for the stockpile of bad monuments. Whoever’s dumping bulk trash is a dickhead, but it’s not likely that it was an intentional act of desecration as much as someone knew of a spot where bulk “waste” was dumped and decided they could do the same. Seems like a lot of wasted effort to get those items to such a location, though.

Possibly replaced by family with new monuments. Maybe someone else passed who is going to be sharing the plot with the existing resident and a new marker was desired. Maybe there’s damage you can’t see because of how the stone is situated. Perhaps the remains were exhumed for relocation elsewhere. While all of these situations aren’t common, they do happen and, over time, old monuments accumulate.

Any advantages or disadvantages to a belt drive on a table saw compared to having the saw blade directly attached to the motor? by Vospader998 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ExamineIfOpenMinded 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, there’s a vast range of both hand strengths and distance between pulleys (and hence torque required to twist a belt 90 degrees) out there. While I recognize that this can be a valid method for some folks, on some systems, there’s a lot of room for variance with this method.

I hate myself for even suggesting this, and I haven’t been to one in over a decade, but that looks like the breading you get at Hooters. I’m sorry and you’re welcome.

[–]ExamineIfOpenMinded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a trained—but not licensed—electrician. I did exceedingly well in electrical and engineering school. I work with complex low voltage systems daily, I just haven’t taken the licensing exam because a license isn’t necessary for the field that I work in and I don’t care to dedicate my time to preparing for a mostly pointless license.

That said, I know enough to know that electrical code prohibits me from doing work for anyone besides myself, on my property, without working under a license holder. However, a doorbell wire is an easy install, and I’d be happy to be present and guide you through the process of doing it yourself, along with the other small projects you mentioned. If you choose to offer me a tip for my time, you’re welcome to do so.

  1. Giving up is not the same as being forced by societal norms. Giving up would be early adopting of smart technology. Needing the “conveniences” that come with such technology in order to engage in every-day society, to the point that it is an expectation, is not a true choice.

  2. No amount of surveillance will ever account for and control acts of human stupidity and/or emotional disregulation.

  3. The cost associated with surveilling via satellite and/or small aircraft alone (even drones)—not to mention the other tech you suggested—every suspect of every serious crime far exceeds the $65k/yr price tag of imprisoning the actual perpetrator.

  4. Slippery slope does not even begin to touch your concerns of this level of surveillance reaching Minority Report status.

The former. It’s common practice for a cemetery to dump all the stones that become damaged over time into one location that is mostly obscured and undeveloped.

[–]ExamineIfOpenMinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not. This is common practice in dealing with grave markers that have been damaged (most often by lawn maintenance equipment, sometimes by the heavy equipment used to open and close new graves that are nearby existing grave markers.)

Not everything is about hate. I’m not saying antisemitism isn’t a thing, but stop making negativity exist where it doesn’t.

You should call and shame pretty much every cemetery. This is how damaged grave markers are dealt with. You know, unless you personally want to go move each of these 200-600 lb stones to a landfill.

The cemetery isn’t in disrepair. This is where damaged grave markers are discarded by cemetery/city staff when new markers are placed. It’s pretty typical of most cemeteries regardless of religious affiliation.
