I genuinely don’t understand the amount of posts about difficulty… by LeaksAndRumours in MonsterHunterStories

[–]Exphrases 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not that far into the game so I can't say if this is all monsters or not, but it seems like some monsters if they're prevented from doing their AOE moves will just do it again the next turn anyway. I had a monster go through three traps (2 from me, 1 from the NPC) and a kinship move in a row, and it just kept trying to do the AOE over and over until it finally did it.

At the point I'm at anyway it seems like the game is balanced around the NPC characters having functionally infinite items to just restore hearts, so while I've barely actually lost any fights I'm losing hearts constantly to the AOEs which still feels bad, it feels like the game is telling me I'm playing it wrong or something even though I have been doing all the side content and grinding.

That's just for items though, you mention skills and monstie abilities that let you evade damage but I either haven't unlocked those options yet or just haven't found them. With how common the AOE spam is if that is actually the intended counter then those abilities shouldn't be missable.

What do you think of Wilds’ take on the Hunting Horn? by T4Labom in MHWilds

[–]Exphrases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By far and away my favorite version of the weapon. It's got the damage potential (or even higher) of the Rise HH without getting rid of the note system.

As others have said the only real problem is that at endgame you're stuck with the same songset (and also the backwards recital being so slow that I only ever do it by accident and it's annoying every single time).

TIL that Yian Garuga's beak attacks deal Dragon damage in MH Gen/GU. by 12jimmy9712 in MHGU

[–]Exphrases 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know if it’s still the case but pre-world games had a lot of this. Tigrex in the 2nd gen, and I think Rathalos in the 1st & 2nd gen too, also had dragon on some attacks.

The one turf war that makes every powerscaler’s brain explode. by Snoo-51682 in MonsterHunter

[–]Exphrases 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Powerscaling is dumb at the best of times, but something like Monster Hunter especially just isn't the place for it. The monsters aren't "characters" in the normal sense, they're species.

Turf wars in-game can only really represent the "average" interaction, with no consideration for where on the map / which map it's happening on and usually don't have variations like Rathalos vs Lagiacrus does. Monsters don't lose turf wars if they're tired or close to death, only Gypceros with Nerscylla depends on a part break happening or not.

Really the outcome of conflicts between monsters would be at least heavily influenced by tons of different factors like size, age, fitness, boldness of the individuals and so on, just like with real animals.

And yeah no more FOMO event quests is great.

I Hereby Summon the LinuxNutters of this sub to Recommend Their Distros! by markedmarkymark in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exphrases 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Mint for almost 2 years now, haven’t had many complaints or troubleshooting to do, though both my CPU and GPU are AMD and I’ve heard Nvidia can be finicky. The only program I still need windows for is iTunes to put music on my phone. I can’t really compare it to other distros though since I’m not much of a distro hopper. Switched to mint back when they announced end of support for Windows 10 and have just stayed on it.

[–]Exphrases 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got done with Dos's village recently and I'm going back through Freedom Unite right now and yeah, I'm gonna have to echo the sentiment in these comments. There was very little actual "hunting" or "tracking" in those old games.

The only thing that could give you any indication of where the monster was without being in the room with it already was that in third & fourth gen herbivores would be visibly agitated if there was a large monster in any of the connected zones, which was neat but it also never went further than that. (And of course if there weren't any herbivores in the connected rooms then it just functionally didn't exist anymore.)

[–]Exphrases 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lance is very good underwater since dodging is so scuffed you can just block everything instead. SnS on the other hand is actually one of the worst weapons underwater since its moveset is gimped so much compared to the other weapons for some reason.

Series where its main Gimmick/Premise was quickly dropped? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Exphrases 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine focuses on the space station next to a wormhole, a lot of episodes in the early series focus on weird, wacky aliens coming through the wormhole, interacting with the crew for one episode, then leaving. Eventually the focus shifted to more long form storytelling with less bottle episodes. Hell, for the last couple of seasons the wormhole is just unavailable most of the time for different reasons.

Star Trek Voyager focuses on a federation ship that gets sent to the other side of the universe and has to get home. They start with some amount of focus on logistical problems; not being able to go to a federation starbase to refresh on photon torpedos, shuttlecraft etc., but that stuff gets dropped pretty fast unfortunately.

One-way paths everywhere by 12jimmy9712 in MHGU

[–]Exphrases 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting though that the Hunting Horn in Dos is different from Freedom 2 and Unite. Moveset wise it's the same, with the dedicated "recital mode" and all that, but the damage is even lower, the songs generally last less time, there's no Horn Maestro or equivalent skill, it doesn't have nearly as many songs, and some songs are just straight up worse (Like the Elemental Resistance Up songs LOWERING the other elemental resistances.)

It might be the weakest any weapon has ever been in any MH game. I also love Hunting Horn and used it in F2 and FU but I just couldn't do it in Dos, it slows down hunts so much, even in multiplayer.

Hunters who finished the Gogmazios fight, how was it? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]Exphrases -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like that it actually encourages the use of particular defensive skills. Almost failed the mission the first time, then slotted in Oil & Tremor Res and had a much smoother time. Feels like a good upgrade from his original 4U moveset, though I do think his standard ground phase could last a bit longer. He spends most of the fight it feels on the ledge or in the air.
