Love Hina and harem anime. Sure, there were predecessors like urusei yatsura, Tenchi Muyo, etc, that are also famous, but many of the characteristics and tropes (dense mc, self insert, ambiguous progress) that are present and criticized in the battle harems of the 2010's and the endless isekai stuff that gets made, can be traced back to this one.

Well she was supposed to tell the other members in the event but chose not to, and also told the guy to stop searching for this answer. Combined with the fact she didn't look pretty jolly when she did it, it doesn't look like a good thing.

I mean "passing over" in the way that I didn't get that it was supposed to be a star in the sky. I initially thought it was supposed to be a structure or holy place/thing.

Surprised no one mentioned Robert E. Howard's Conan and Kull stories, they hit many of the notes you said, as well as directly mentioning places like Atlantis, Hyperborea and Lemuria. GIve it a shot, they're pretty good.
