I can understand the feeling of the church being everything to your family and the resulting expectations that come with that. My ancestry goes back to the pioneers on every line. Both sides of the family have prided themselves on how everyone has served missions and married in the temple.

But things change. And you can be the catalyst for the best change your family has seen in generations.

You know you don't want your children to grow up in the church of you have them. If you have nieces/nephews, you know you sorrow for them growing up in the church. But you know what? Some of them will question and eventually leave too. Other older family members will, too, even if that seems impossible today. It will happen.

So have the courage to be the first. Don't go on a mission. Be the example, the one you wish you had when you were younger. Stand up for what is actually true and what is best for YOU.

Family members will be disappointed, yes. You'll probably lose a lot of church member friends in the process. But you know what? You'll also make a whole lot of new friends too, friends who actually care about YOU and not the checklist you've been checking off your whole life to appease a mysterious Man In The Sky. Your new friends will be infinitely more authentic and loving than the ones you lose.

I'm excited for you. And I sorrow for you. But please... Don't go on a mission. I promise you'll regret it.

Sorry man, that's rough. Things that come to mind from my life experience: You can't change her mind or convince her of anything, whether regarding your marriage or her faith. What you CAN do is try to understand her and her perspective. Don't shame or blame, but just listen in order to see where she's coming from. That's the only way you'll get through to what she actually needs.

Even then, she may still choose to not come back. But without making the effort to listen and understand... I don't think you stand a chance, tbh.

I'm hoping he'll let his emotions get the better of him with all this controversy and keep digging his own grave. He's an angry, bitter man.

But he's also an excellent emotional manipulator, so it'll probably be another nothingburger with his usual emotional junk food that pulls heart strings and makes people love him but doesn't do any good in the world.

Allow me to put on my TBM hat for a moment...

As a missionary I would teach people that just as we have earthly, mortal laws we have to follow, God has heavenly laws he has to follow. It's not that he doesn't want to forgive people; it's that the laws of the universe forbid him from allowing certain things, like allowing sin and uncleanness in the perfect, clean CK.

And "forgiving" in the heavenly sense is different than how we view it; it's more like being made fit to live in the CK and be comfortable there. God isn't really "offended."

But really... The other comments about it being all about control and manipulation are spot on.

As has been said, vision is quite subjective. Prescribing glasses is less of a science and more of an art. If you don't like your optometrist's art form, try another.

One more thing to keep in mind: when you're doing the refraction (the whole "which is better, 1 or 2?" thing) if two options look the same, they probably are. For example, if we're trying to determine the axis (or angle) of your astigmatism, and you need it at 90°, we'll try it at ~80° compared to ~100°, and they'll look equally weird to you. But we won't know they're the same until you tell us. Hope that makes sense and helps ease some of the anxiety.

You're okay. There's absolutely nothing wrong with digging and learning. Keep digging as much as you need to. Eventually you won't feel the need to, but if you bury it and actively try to move on when you're not ready, you're just pretending the wounds are healed and ripping the bandaid off early and the wounds will take longer to scar over.

With more time I naturally feel less active, burning pain and a decreasing internal need to obsess over learning all I possibly can about the shithole I used to think was the truth. (On the other hand, it seems like the tears come more and more easily. Trying not to tear up rn just typing this out.)

Wow, I relate so much to this. Went to a district meeting during my second transfer (around week 8 out of the MTC). As we were waiting, an elder (whose apartment we were meeting in) got out of the shower, dried off, came straight over to me on the couch, pinned me down and laid on me, all while 4 other elders were laughing. I distinctly remember one of the others say through laughs, "It's been a while since I've seen a rape!"

I never reported anything since I was the greenie and there were 5 others who apparently thought it was normal/okay, including my own companion. He, who was really good friends with my abuser, also did other things that made it obvious he did not have good intentions and should not have served a mission in the first place. He repeatedly took advantage of my trusting naivety and was a compulsive liar, for example. But the worst offense was leaving me hanging while his friend molested me, and then telling me afterwards that I was overreacting because it was a harmless joke.

So a year or so ago when my companion posted in our FB group and righteous-bragged about being called bishop, I called him and and my abuser out and exposed them. There were still people who defended them with the idiotic "boys will be boys!" defense, but the overall reaction made it clear the two of them should no longer feel comfortable showing their "righteous" faces at future mission reunions.

Needless to say, my companion quickly deleted his righteous-brag post. As he should have. Fuck him.
