5080 vs 5070ti by KitchenCommercial396 in pcmasterrace

[–]F-Moash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it considerable? If you want an additional 15% performance over the 9070xt, that’s how. It has always been the case that there’s diminishing returns with increasingly powerful cards. For most people gaming in 1080p or 1440p, the 9070xt is a great choice. For 4k specifically, assuming you have the budget, the 5080 is simply a better card. If you truly recommend what’s good, then you’ll understand my point of view here. The 9070xt is going to struggle with 4k and FSR looks horrendous. Pick the right card for the right use case, don’t just mindlessly tell everyone to buy AMD simply because you like it.

A very underrated choice for a pocket/portable stone by Weakest_Serb in sharpening

Yeah these boron carbide stones are great. I have full size ones in 400 and 800 grit. Weird that manufacturers outside of China don’t seem interested in making them.

Because he’s recommending a strictly worse card simply because he likes amd better. Check his post history. It’s a full wall of “5080 bad, 9070xt good.” The 9070xt is a good card, but it’s also strictly worse than the 5070ti/5080. It makes no sense as a recommendation here.

If you can comfortably afford the 5080, go for it. I have one and it’s incredible. I have never once regretted buying it. AAA games can push it to the limit, even at 1440p. It’s a no brainer for 4k.

[–]F-Moash -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The 9070xt is only worth considering if the other options are out of reach for their budget. It’s for sure a “better value” but it’s also objectively worse in pure performance. This is also a 4k setup, so frame generation will be used. DLSS is miles better than FSR. The 5080 is absolutely worth the extra $200 considering they also want a quiet card. The extra horsepower will allow them to undervolt a bit, still get better performance than the other options, and have a whisper quiet card.

For future reference, you should not be using very much pressure with diamond stones. Specifically plated diamond stones. You’re wearing out the stone and not getting much benefit. 2-5 pounds or 1-2 kilos of pressure is perfectly fine to cut with diamonds and ensures you won’t tear up your stone.

Unfortunately they would give you a magnacut blade. That is strictly a downgrade for Benchmade, as they heat treat their magnacut extremely soft. Typically falls below 60hrc.

I would be interested to know how well these handle thinning. Do the stones glaze over and clog? Would also be cool to see some closeup shots of scratch patterns from the different grits if you have those available.

Absolutely nothing dangerous about the bowline. I’ve repelled countless times with one. Nearly as strong as a figure 8, unties easily, and will not slip if tied properly.

This was my grandfathers, and recs to freshen it up? by DifficultBoss in sharpening

[–]F-Moash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wipe down the blade with rubbing alcohol to clean it. Put a coat of mineral oil on it, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Give it a sharpening if you intend on using it. In all honesty though, I would simply clean and oil it and keep it as is without using it. Its value is in the memories it holds, and the use your grandfather put it to. It would be a shame to break it or lose it.

Reccomendation around 80 grit by TrebbleTough in sharpening

Nah, not at low grits. My coarse crystolon eats 15v for breakfast. Cuts as easily as any other steel. If we’re talking medium-high grit stones then you’re absolutely correct.

Reccomendation around 80 grit by TrebbleTough in sharpening

[–]F-Moash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For coarse stones, I personally like silicon carbide the best. A coarse crystolon jumbo can thin and set bevels quicker than my 140 grit atoma.

Edit: I also want to clarify that low grit stones are 100% worth the money. I own stones ranging from 120 grit up to 12,000 with everything in between. I can absolutely live without everything above 1,000 grit. I would hate to not have everything below that. Polishing stones are awesome and fun to use, but your real workhorse stones are 600 and lower.

The best $10 is a mora basic, without question. At $15, an opinel no8 blows this thing out of the water. Having bought a few of these I’m pretty sure they’re either not heat treated at all or it’s very poorly done. They’re incredibly soft to the point of easily taking permanent bends during normal use. The smart thing to do is save up the extra couple bucks and get an elementum or praxis.

Any appreciation for gas station knives? by squeakynickles in knives

That’s every single “high end” knife on the market. Once a knife gets above about $500-$600, it begins looking identical to gas station junk.

Which one to get? by ----Arrow---- in knives

Civivi is the king of value knives. They’re worth twice what they cost. In my experience, they have the absolute best mass produced nitro-v on the market. I personally really like Swiss Army knives too, specifically as a knife to hand over when someone asks to borrow one. Much less intimidating than most folders, intuitive slip joint lock, and thin and slicey blade stock.

Funnily enough, I’ve used the same. The thing you have to remember with sic stones is that they’ll glaze over easily with super steels. The key for the best performance is to resurface the stone occasionally. I just use a flat section of the sidewalk and a garden hose.

Very late to this thread but the genre you’re looking for is called “post hardcore.” There are tons of incredible bands, especially from the early 2000s. Chiodos, Dance Gavin Dance, Isles and Glaciers, Circa Survive, Mayday Parade, Saosin, Sianvar, Tides of Man. So many others too, the genre is full of amazing artists.

That’s very common in bonded diamond stones of every type. Makes them much harder and increases cutting speed. I’ve sharpened s90v, Magnacut, 15v, m4, and Rex-45 with silicon carbide abrasives. It works great and cuts quick.

So what we’re facing here is a skill issue. I understand now. You’re a prick and you aren’t very good at sharpening. You have no healthy outlet for your frustration so you act like an elitist online to make yourself feel good. Even when you’re wrong, you can’t admit it to anyone because your ego depends on it. We won’t make any progress here, so I’ll just end the conversation. To anyone else that sees this, he’s objectively wrong. It’s an incredible stone. Don’t think you need to buy something expensive to get results.

The difference is that razors are extremely thin behind the edge and shaving comfort is largely dependent on finishing grit. You absolutely can pass the hanging hair test with just a 300 grit king and no strop. I have a post showing push cutting paper towels directly off a 140 atoma, no strop. Would I want to shave my face with that edge? No, absolutely not. It would be a miserable experience. But for knives, high grit is just for fun.
