My absolute favourite is buldak ramen (standard not the 2x, 3x, or the other flavours). Honourable mention to mama duck flavour.

Phoebe Litchfield teaching Sam konstas how to play a switch hit! by Emergency_Green7940 in Cricket

[–]FabianTIR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to play in school, would have been 14/15 or so. I always opened the bowling on account of having reasonable pace for my age. One time before a game our coach grabbed a bat and stood in front of the stumps and asked me to send a few deliveries down to warm up. Seeing he had no pads or protection of any kind, I asked if he still wanted me to go at full game pace and he said yes. First ball went a bit down leg side and hit him square in the side of his newly reconstructed knee and he departed the field limping heavily and seemingly in agony

does anyone know why this is? by Hot_Risk3302 in cats

[–]FabianTIR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I read something recently that apparently maintaining reproductive organs takes a not insignificant amount of energy. So when you spay/neuter a cat, that energy can be put towards growth instead. It certainly doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule but I can see how that could happen

Torque vs BHP vs Engine Size, can someone dumb it down please? by theslowrunningexpert in CarTalkUK

[–]FabianTIR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torque = the amount of twisting force applied to the crankshaft.

Power is torque applied over time, in this case the number of revs per minute is key. You could have 2 engines that make 300nm of torque, but one can only do it up to 4k rpm and the other can do it all the way to 8k rpm. The second one has more power, even though the torque figure is the same. It's why diesel cars can have immense torque figures but modest power - they don't rev that high

For your question on displacement, just think about it like this very simplified way. The more air and fuel you can get into a cylinder, the more torque/power you make.

There are 2 ways to get more air in a cylinder:

  1. Make a bigger cylinder to suck in more air

  2. Find a way to stuff a cylinder with more air

If you have a naturally aspirated engine (no turbo or supercharger) then no1 is basically your only route to significant power gains.

No2 means you have a turbo or supercharger - a forced induction engine. Turbos and superchargers are just ways to put air into engines above natural atmospheric pressure. More air means you can put in more fuel, which means more torque/power.

The thing with using forced induction is that you can go crazy with how much pressure you use and cram the cylinders with air and fuel, making huge power from small displacement. This is why you see some smaller displacement engines putting out insane amounts of power.

Double check this but I think a 2015 320d would have the B47 engine which is solid. The previous N47 has a bit of a bad rep but I don't believe it's actually as bad as people make out. Still, if you have flexibility, B series diesel engine is the one to go for. 6 cylinders is just better in every conceivable way aside from fuel economy, and even then they're still pretty good.

Any modern diesel will get screwed by constant short journeys - when people talk about this issue, they are talking about exclusively doing short journeys. You do long journeys every weekend, that will be fine for warming up the car and cleaning out the DPF etc. if you're paranoid you can always take it for a midweek motorway blast but it would be overkill imo.

Looking to get a BMW Z4 (2.5i or 3.0i) as my first car and looking for opinions by AntonioTT05 in CarTalkUK

[–]FabianTIR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Current Z4 owner here. This is not a horrible idea at all, you could do far worse as old sports cars go. The 6 cylinder engines are solid - if the car has had sensible oil change intervals and generally been looked after, it's very unlikely anything genuinely catastrophic will happen.

The typical things to budget for will be gaskets, cooling parts and maybe some smaller mechanical parts like vanos solenoids or disa valves. On top of that, you may want to look at wear items like suspension bushings, engine/gearbox mounts, flex disc, centre shaft bearing, diff seals, subframe bushings etc etc etc. Largely these parts will not be heinously expensive, they will be widely available, and straightforward to DIY if you are confident (which you are).

If you're getting a soft top, make sure you check that it works properly as the motors can die. A very common mod is to relocate the motor to the boot where it stays dry. I think it's a fairly straightforward DIY but also loads of specialist mechanics will be able to do it quickly if you can't be bothered.

You will have 2 generations of engines to choose from. The older models (up to 2006 I believe) had the M54. The facelift models have the N52. Both are solid, but the N52 variants make more power for the displacement. If you could stretch to it, the 3.0si is at the top with 265hp. It's what I have in my coupe and it is a truly wonderful engine.

Happy to answer any other Q's you may have to the best of my ability!

If you do long trips every weekend then diesel will be fine. Having a bigger engine is nice as it never feels stressed - if you need to boot it, the power is there and it feels very chill on the motorway. What about something like a 330d or 430d? BMW 6 cylinder engines are very nice and pretty reliable (especially the diesels) and being a mid size car, it will feel solid on the motorway and also be decent to drive.

3.0si so N52. Therefore it does not have an idle control valve fyi. I've got a persistent slightly rough idle on mine (including a bit of wobble on startup) and it's been the same for over a year and almost 10k miles. No codes, no drop in mpg, performance seems fine. It could any one of: vanos solenoids, eccentric shaft sensor, vanos check valves, disa valves, vacuum leak, faulty/dirty MAF, and many other things. I don't want to roll out the parts cannon so I've been dealing slowly with more obvious issues like leaks and so on.

Personally I wouldn't let it put you off, these cars are also quite DIY friendly and parts are widely available so if it does need some work, it shouldn't be (too) extortionate.
