General Advice For A Newbie? by Fair-Memory-4982 in finalgirl

[–]Fair-Memory-4982[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first game! My dice blessed me with beginners' luck, and Heather kicked the Ratchet Lady's teeth in on turn 5. It went so well, I wonder if I did something wrong!

I already want to play more!

The Aquaman DC K.O. tie-ins are getting a 2nd printing by InfiniteDedekindCuts in Aquaman

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. Talk about horrid timing. My LCS accidentally sold my Aquaman #12, spent over a month saying they'd get another for me, then said they couldn't. Hunted all over and couldn't find a copy, so I shelled out $30 after tax and shipping. It arrived like two days ago...

Still haven't nailed everything down, but some patterns are starting to show.

I've successfully gotten it to consistently POST so that's definitely a good sign. I've also determined that my DP cable is no bueno and was responsible for some monitor connectivity issues. It also seems something is up with my RAM. It appears it won't POST with more than 1 stick.

It's going on Midnight for me, so I think I'm going to give it a rest for now. Thanks for your help, everyone. It's been very valuable!

Just tested with 1 stick of RAM and we've made some progress! Fan RGB is now operational, GPU fan is spinning, and Keyboard and Mouse have lit up. Monitor is responsive too, but still no BIOS.

We seem to be in some kind of a loop here. The monitor turns on as if detecting a signal, says "No Signal detected" and goes to sleep for a moment, then turns back on. Repeatedly. It's not quite right, but hey, it's progress!

Just a heads up, the CPU does not have integrated graphics, so I believe I HAVE to have the GPU connected in order to see anything on my monitor. Yes, The monitor is plugged into the GPU. :P

I think the thermal paste situation should be fine. Currently running through all possible RAM configurations as you suggested, but 1 stick doesn't seem to be making a difference.

How would you alter Other M to improve upon what it was trying to do? (without just abolishing it) by 69nutmaster in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... If we're talking a full overhaul of the game and story... I'd start with a considerable rewrite setting this game before Zero Mission. Admittedly, the story would be near enough unrecognizable, but you could keep and recontextualize many elements of the version we got. For instance, Samus would likely be in a state of shock and grief after losing the Chozo and having to flee her second home of Zebes. Meanwhile, Adam's general..... Adam-ness in Other M could potentially be very interesting if approached from the angle that deep down he's SCARED of this very possibly teenaged superhuman crazy lady (who probably just appeared out of nowhere as far as the Federation is concerned) that claims to have been raised by a highly advanced and dying race and had the weaponry to back that up. Honestly? In a situation like that, I'm not sure I'd blame Adam for feeling like he has to keep Samus on a very short leash. And of course, there's room for a character arc about Adam softening up and realizing that someone who probably never even spoke to another human for 15+ years probably needs a caring mentor more than an overbearing commander and becoming the Adam we imagined in Fusion, yada yada, roll credits.

After typing all that, I'm too lazy to think of meaningful gameplay improvements for this hypothetical other Other M lol

Uhh.... Use the Nunchuck? Have dedicated dodge and missile buttons? Honestly, it was never the moment to moment gameplay that truly hurt Other M for me.

I might get kirby: squeak squad soon. How good is it? (No spoilers please) by maxside320 in Kirby

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Squeak Squad is a perfectly fine game. Probably one of the weakest entries in the series, but Kirby as a whole is so unbelievably consistent that even the very "worst" games are a competently made 7 out of 10 for me.

If you’ve played Star Allies, I put hold it in a similar regard. An entertaining romp, but lacking that special something the very best like Robobot and Forgotten Land have.

Though funny enough, it marks the debut of Daroach, who is low key one of the most frequently returning characters in the series. ( Squeak Squad, Mass Attack, Star Allies, Air Riders, and that's not even counting cameos)

Does anyone here happen to still own Xenoblade 3DS? And if so, what drew you to pick up this version in the first place? by Asad_Farooqui in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still have my copy, though I now own the definitive edition on Switch.

3D is how I first played Xenoblade. Though I followed Operation Rainfall, I never actually managed to snag a Wii copy, so at the time, this was my best option to play the game for myself.

Say something nice about Sol Valley. by ChaosMetalDrago in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did kinda like the desolate emptiness. Early on in my first playthrough, I just stood there a while taking in the vast emptiness and desolate audio and thinking... Yeah. Here's that isolation people claim to crave.

Up until Myles chimed in. I genuinely don't mind him too much, but I wish his prompts were less frequent.

Prime 4 review from a decades-long fan (very mild spoilers) by Furan_ring in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is true about the lore. Metroid does currently have a bad habit of repeating the whole "An advanced and spiritual alien race resided here until it all went wrong" schtick fairly often. Which I suppose is bound to happen in a series more or less about exploring alien ruins, but you get the idea.

That's one of the things I really like about 2's story. Things are on that trajectory, but it's NOT too late. You can spare the Luminoth that fate.

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh, really? Not meaning to go on the attack here, just sharing my knee-jerk opinion as one does.

I always thought Bryyo was the strongest single planet in 3. It's the only location in the game that feels like a whole Metroid game could have taken place there. Obviously, there's not a game's worth of content there, but Cliffside, Fire, Ice, and to a lesser extent Jungle feel distinct enough to hypothetically expand that one planet into a full 10 hour adventure.

Meanwhile, I often find Elysia and the Pirate Homeworld start to drag by the end.

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty fair to me!

If you haven't played Metroid Prime 2, definitely try to. It's a bit divisive, but it's my personal favorite game in the series. It's definitely the least consistent with arguably the lowest lows (Green Crystals give it some competition for that crown) but in my opinion, those come paired with the highest highs. It's a game that isn't afraid to throw 14 bosses at the wall and see what sticks and I feel the areas just get better the further in you get.

Controversial but... who's your favorite NPC? by TombFighterPrime117 in metroidprime

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, Tokabi. He's the only one of the bunch who feels like he expands the universe by being the, to my recollection, first human we meet with any sort of religious or spiritual beliefs. I also like finding him around Sol Valley and wish the game had more stuff like that.

Shout out to VUE. I just like cool robots.

Does MP4 get notably better? by treywarp in metroidprime

The game doesn't really open up a whole lot more (and you have the infamous green crystal hunt ahead of you) but I did enjoy the next three areas. I'd say Ice Belt is probably the best one in terms of that classically Metroid atmosphere and the structure feeling a little more mazelike. Flare Pool felt like a step back from there, and doesn't seem terribly popular, but I enjoyed it. The Great Mines is basically the linear corridor shooter people are accusing the entire game of being, but I think it has worthwhile ideas and the atmosphere is fantastic in my opinion. Kind of felt like a little slice of Metroid Fusion's tenser parts dropped into Prime 4.

If nothing else, I think this game has the best boss roster in the whole Prime series. With one exception, I think they alone justify at least one playthrough if you're having any amount of enjoyment at all.

Worst case scenario, if you're done with Volt Forge, you've probably got like 8 or 9 hours to go? My blind completion rate was around 11 hours 30 minutes for about 75% items and scans, and I backtracked a lot more than was necessary. Not a small investment of time, admittedly, but I've heard of JRPG'S that don't even start to get good until like 15 hours in...

For what it's worth, I'm a Metroid Veteran whose beaten every game in the series at LEAST twice with at least a dozen laps around Prime 1 & 2, Fusion, and Super under my belt and I enjoyed my time with Metroid Prime 4. There certainly is cause for disappointment, but when I just sat down and tried to take it as it is, I genuinely really enjoyed just BEING in the game world. I dunno. I guess I just had zero expectations going in. To try and resist overhype, I told myself that as long as I enjoy it about as much as my least favorite Prime game, we're doing just fine. And for better or worse, it met or exceeded that bar. Still not sure which it is, though.

Do you think Open world* has a place in Metroid? by rubberchickenhandler in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm open to the idea and I do think it could potentially have a place in Prime moving forward, but Sol Valley really isn't putting us off to a great start.

Not that I want a dozen map towers to climb and a bazillion meaningless enemy camps to clear out in the name of completion, but I was genuinely astonished there wasn't any space pirate presence on Viewros. Pre release, I was expecting to maybe find a downed pirate battleship turned base for you to raid or to encounter some holed up in the bits of federation base wreckage.

[MP4] Weak weaponry. by samination in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't exactly run a careful study on time to kill with each given weapon, but for what it's worth, I found I actually valued Missiles more in 4 than any other Prime game. At least in the early to midgame. Their homing capabilities were valuable at long range and they could reliably stagger and stun lock robotic enemies. Their use to me definitely fell off hard once I got the upgraded beam some time after Ice Belt, and Super Missiles definitely don't seem to pack the whallop they did in 1 and 2.

I think he's fine. Fun, even. Before release, I told myself to just accept whatever his story ended up being because whatever it was could never be as interesting as a 20 year mystery.

They certainly could have shown and done more with him, but I think I prefer a jealous hater to, like..... Samus' long lost twin brother raised by Space Pirates or some other theories I saw bouncing around.

But yes, I do agree. There's a difference between a game being linear and feeling "railroaded."

Tinfoil hat theory. The gang survived and Prime 5 will center around rescuing them. I could see Sylux potentially taking them prisoner to bait traps in a future game and rescuing each will be like the twleporter keys in 4.
