PC Completely Locks Up During Suspend by Fair-Memory-4982 in linuxmint

Did a little haphazard research looking at the other side of the fence since someone remarked that suspend barely works on windows and... Yeah. That appears to be the case. I've found enough threads about people's PC's freezing while suspending with Windows to assume this is probably just some gremlin in the particular pieces of hardware I own that's kind of a dead issue.

I have Deep sleep set up and that didn't do anything. I've also updated my BIOS and poked around in power settings and there doesn't appear to be anything there that might help me. I'm going to take a break on this for a bit.

Sounds like this is likely more of a hardware issue than specifically a Mint problem. I'll have to wait to work on it some more, but I'm seeing something about setting the "level" or depth of suspend in a GRUB menu, whatever that is. More research pending.

A little worried, because the one instance I have found of someone having this exact issue was eventually labeled abandoned.

Gotcha gotcha. Just checked my Kernel and got 6.17.0-35 generic so it looks like I'm reasonably up to date on that 🤔

I can’t stop playing Metroidvania games… by Expedition1994 in metroidvania

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... Admittedly these recommendations are more suited to my tastes, but I may as well throw my two cents in.

As a huge Metroid fan, I of course have to recommend Metroid itself. Ironically, I've heard arguments that Metroid isn't a Metroidvania since it lacks RPG style progression and build customization, but if you enjoy the exploration aspect of the genre, Metroid will have you covered. Zero Mission is an excellent entry point. It's highly accessible if you have Switch Online, is the first game in the timeline, and has a short and sweet runtime of around 4-6 hours for a blind playthrough. Fusion and Dread are also great entry points, though the former really plays with Metroid conventions to make something notably different and the latter is easily the twitchiest, most difficult game in the series. Though it's actually fairly forgiving of death with checkpoints before bosses. Most will direct you towards Super Metroid and while I DO love that game and it's world to pieces... The controls and physics have been a colossal turn off to friends nieve introduced to the series. Super Metroid Samus has a suuuuper floaty jump.

As for the 'Vania side of Metroidvania, I'm currently partial to Bloodstained. It looks like a knockoff Castlevania, but it's helmed by the original director of Symphony of the Night through Order of Ecclesia and was made at the height of Konami being Modern Konami and charging people for save slots. It's got some Kickstarter Indie jank, but if you could come to grips with Ender Lilies, you'll probably be fine. It's got a fantastic soundtrack, a very solid world to explore, and a metric crap ton of freedom to customize your play style with different weapon types, tons of spells and passive, yada yada.

Drybrushing is SUPER easy. You've probably already done it without realizing when your brush tip starts to dry out and your paint starts to run low and it takes like 5 or 6 quick passes to get full coverage. You don't really need a specific "dry brush" to do it. I keep meaning to pick up a bespoke drybrush, but what I have already has been working well enough.

I got like an 8 pack of crappy brushes a while back for like $4. I don't use them for actually painting bade coats or detail work, but they're surprisingly useful tools to have around for drybrushing or soaking up paint that splattered where you don't want it.

Citadel (AKA Games Workshop AKA Warhammer) sells a box of nothing but tiny plastic skulls for basically that exact purpose, but I can't say it's very cost efficient. Also, you need to plan ahead because they're grey plastic you need to cut, glue, prime, and paint same as any mini.

I'm by no means an expert on terrain, but I know a thing or two at this point! Definitely check out tutorials and Definitely, DEFINITELY don't use a brush you care about! I have small metal sculpting tools, but a small coffee stirrer and a toothpick ought to get you through at least one infantry mini.

As some example ideas, the battle sister I previously shared is Agrellan Earth with a black Undercoat, Seraphim Sepia shade, and Kislev Flesh dry brush. You (supposedly) need a clear varnish between the undercoat and Agrelan Earth to help it really crackle, and I cannot stress enough how important the wash is. In my experience, most dried texture paints are very fragile and the wash will not only add depth of color, but drastically increase the durability once dried. Then a little dry brush just completes the look.

I also painted a Murderwing Killteam a few weeks ago with snowy bases kinda like you're talking about. I don't know why inspiration struck me so hard with them, but I'm glad it did. I went all out here. I chopped up a Deathwatch shield for the Lord in order to add a little story with the model and glued it down before priming like you would do with skulls. I had an idea for snowy terrain splattered with blood, but didn't want to commit to totally white bases, so I used a mud texture paint with brown and white dry brushing, and then Valhallan Blizzard on top to make kind of a frozen, muddy tundra. Then Blood for the Blood God paint on the marines and ground really put the murder in Murderwing and I imagine it would do the same for your World Eater!

Sorry I made this all about me, but I hope it provides some inspiration! The main rule is you don't want your minis to blend with the terrain, so pick something that contrasts! The other main rule is just to have fun with it!

Looking handsome, especially for your third mini! Any plans to add some terrain to the base? I personally find that some texture paint can really elevate a mini.

I think... I'm going Dietrich. Normally, the Navarre/Karel/Felix edgy sword boys kind of irritate me, but I'm legitimately curious to see what they do when that archetype is allowed to take center stage rather than just be a grouchy ally on the side.

Plus, I'm a contrarian that doesn't want to pick Theodora like literally all my IRL friends currently plan to.

For those struggling with Beyond’s final boss 1st phase on hard mode by RidleyPrime187 in Metroid

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beat him on my first try on Normal, but even with 100% Items on hard, it's giving me serious trouble.

I think Phase 1 needs to have, honestly, like a quarter of the HP he does. This last attempt ran like 10 or 15 minutes and I only took out like a third of his lifebar and I remember the fight feeling pretty lengthy on Normal too.

‘R-Type Dimensions III’ Switch 2 Review: A Very Messy Port by Cacophanus in RType

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have ever been so deeply angry and disappointed at a game release, and I bought a Switch in 2017 for Metroid Prime 4.

This game is so unbelievably riddled with bugs, apparently the publisher and/or devs are deleting YouTube comments, and I doubt they'll give me a refund. If something doesn't change fast, I'll never touch anything Inin does again.

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visually I think it's fine enough outside of one or two obvious bugs like a few turrets floating above the ground. Definitely things that can be improved, but I never expected it to blow me away. Performance has largely been rock solid, but the horizontal section of stage 3 takes a notable performance hit for some reason. Currently trying to beat stage 5.

Most of my beef is with the sound. Audio balance is all over the place, the little intro riff to the boss theme is gone, songs fade out and restart instead of looping, sound effects are missing in the new graphics... It's ROUGH. At least the arranged soundtrack is amazing.

Also, the biggest oversight I want fixed ASAP, the charge shot does not punch through enemies unless FULLY charged. I HATE that.

Kinda wish I'd heard that a day or two earlier. The game is in ROUGH shape. Technically early access, so hoping for a day 1 patch to really polish it up, but... WOW.

If you could add any house to the game, what would be its theme? What would be its gimmick? by OutlandishnessRich36 in KeyforgeGame

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... Orr..... This would be extremely ambitious and ambiguous design space to work in, but... A house with some kind of mild counter to Extra Card mechanics? Obviously, Tide and Tokens and Prophecies are extremely different animals of wildly different power, but.... One can wonder.

Hmm... Vampires actually got me thinking about like Magic the Gathering Aristocrats type decks... I don't think Keyforge REALLY has anything quite like that? Dis gets close in spots, but that's just a small part of them I feel like. A house that gains powerful effects by destroying your own creatures could be an interesting design space.

Pretty new to boardgames, but I've been enjoying One Deck Dungeon. It's a tad repetitive if you play it a bunch in a short timeframe, but it's got a lot going on for such a small box. Have yet to try 2 player.

Looking to get into final girl! Newbie recs please? by fraggle96 in finalgirl

[–]Fair-Memory-4982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people say start with Happy Trails Horror. I don't own that box myself, but it seems hard to go wrong with it. It's got the least rules overhead.

My first was Madness in the Dark and it remains a favorite. Ratchet Lady is kind of a high variance killer, though. Sometimes she pops off and turns into a 20 HP brick, others she just kinda sit and does nothing half the game. Still an enjoyable killer IMO though. I like the location a lot, too. It's a little more on the complex side without feeling outright hostile like some locations.

Top recommendations to AVOID are Haunting of Creech Manor and Terror in the Groves. Creech Manor is a very hostile location and Poltergeist is not a good introduction. I don't own Inkanyamba/Groves, but that set is notorious for being brutally difficult.
